17.01.2022 Should the ACT be allowed to create its own laws on issues such as voluntary euthanasia? Canberra man Neil O'Riordan helped his wife Penelope Blume end her own ...life last year. Her body had been ravaged by motor neurone disease when she passed away in his arms. He says if the ACT had been able to legalise voluntary euthanasa, like Victoria and WA, he would have been able to spend her last day with family instead of being taken away by police. "I wasn't allowed to go back in to say goodbye to my wife I had to make inquiries as to where my wife's body was. Was she still at home? Had she been moved?" Read more: https://ab.co/2Ua1JVZ
13.01.2022 In her speech on Mike Gaffney’s voluntary assisted dying bill (VAD) in the Legislative Council in Tasmania, fellow Independent Meg Webb criticised the campaign ...tactics employed in religious-based opposition to the bill. Webb took exception to the effort of anti-VAD campaigners to impose their ‘moral or faith position’ on the rest of the Tasmanian community, which is overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation. She also voiced her displeasure at the use of the term ‘suicide’ being used by organisations such as the Australian Christian Lobby and the Catholic Church to describe the end-of-life option. After days of debate in the Legislative Council, Gaffney’s bill is now in the committee stage, where members of the council will have an opportunity to examine the details of the bill, clause by clause, ahead of a vote. 08.01.2022 This is a MUST-WATCH video! In making the case for voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation in Tasmania’s Legislative Council on Tuesday, Independent MLC Mik...e Gaffney made an impassioned plea to his colleagues to support his bill. In rounding out his epic speech of about 105 minutes, Mike became emotional as he argued that Tasmanians should have the right to a humane option to end their life if suffering intolerable pain. At the National Secular Lobby, we applaud Mike for the determination he has shown in consulting with all segments of the community to draft a bill and bring it before the state parliament for debate. Mike is a big supporter of secularism. In a Q&A on our Secular Spotlight in July, he said that the decision-making of the state should always remain separate from the influence of the church. 08.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TASMANIA Their assisted dying bill has just passed in the upper house following a lengthy and emotional debate. While the Government has commi...tted to tabling the proposed laws in the lower house by the end of this year, debate will not wrap up until March next year. SA is set to be the next state to introduce a VAD law so add your name if you support these laws - https://www.saves.asn.au/signmeup See more
