25.01.2022 It doesnt get any better than this!

25.01.2022 A 26 degree day and this!

25.01.2022 At the Gun Club Heath this morning I found at least a dozen plants of Thelymitra carnea. This warm weather is doing wonders for the Sun Orchids!

24.01.2022 Bird of the Week: White-bellied Sea-Eagle 18 September 2020 A bird you all know! If Mallacoota was to have a signature bird, this one would be a strong candid...ate. Knowing the adults is easy - they are the only white, grey & black, very large, bird of prey in the area. But knowing the immatures and juveniles is much harder. Especially as Mallacoota is home to Wedge-tailed Eagles, Little Eagles, Whistling Kites and Square-tailed Kites and even Osprey rarely - all of which have similarities. The first thing to look for is the size. White-bellied Sea-Eagles are massive birds. Only Wedge-tailed Eagles are a similar size. But size can be hard to pick when theres nothing around for comparison. The second thing to look for is the short tail. Compared to the wings, the White-bellied Sea-Eagle has quite a short tail. Compare this to the Wedge-tailed Eagles very long tail, and the Whistling Kites long blonde tail. (see pics) The tail ends in a bit of a triangle, but it's a shallow triangle, not a long pointy diamond like a Wedge-tailed Eagle has. Whistling Kites, Little Eagles & Osprey have a rounded end to their tails. Square-tailed Kites have a flat, square end to their tails. Also look for the broad wings, often held upwards in a triangle. Colour is difficult. Young White-bellied Sea-Eagles are brown, as are most of the others. There are times when the light is bad and they can look quite dark, almost like a Wedgie. So shape is the key. They dont just eat fish. They are known predators of flying-foxes, seabirds, freshwater turtles and even occasionally rabbits. They will eat carrion, and anything suitable washed up on the beach. White-bellied Sea-Eagles are a shy and wary bird, and dont respond well to disturbance or development near their habitat. Breeding success is highest in remote areas. They have been known to abandon nests and chicks if people get too close. Did you know that our White-bellied Sea-Eagle is not exclusively Aussie? They also occur in India, south-east Asia & New Guinea. Debus (2012) says that Sanfords Sea-Eagle H. sanfordi from the Solomon Islands is a subspecies, but I cant find further references so I think that information may be superceded. Do others know? In Mallacoota we are very lucky to have several breeding pairs. It is estimated that the whole of Victoria only has 100 pairs. Thanks to Rob Clay Martin Maderthaner for pics. 24.01.2022 Home from another stay in beautiful Mallacoota... I was sad to see Origami Coffee closed this weekend - is it just currently/for the moment, or permanent (hope not!)?

22.01.2022 This evening at 5pm before the big storm arrived at 9pm tonight.

22.01.2022 I revisited the heath towards Shipwreck Creek this morning. My target was Caladenia tessellata reported by an expert. After about 15 minutes looking at one side of the track I looked at the other side of the track. And in about 3 nanoseconds there were 5 of them!

19.01.2022 Lake getting back to normal, with tide coming in

18.01.2022 Lots of 'running postman' in as yet bare regrowth along the clifftop walk to Quarry Beach. These were in the heath out by the airport, which was slashed this time last year, and full of flowers last October, before being burnt.

18.01.2022 Ok so we will re-open the park from this coming Thursday morning 17th September 2020. A reminder, we are in a very remote area of Victoria, we have restricted p...ower available, hot showers, toilets and nice fresh drinking water (heaven sent) We are on the banks of the Wallagaraugh River which is fantastic for kayaking, canoeing and boating. Fishing is just as good from the banks of the river or from your own boat, we catch mostly bream and flathead. The river is great for swimming, all ages and the kids love it. You can bring your dog to our park, behaviour rules apply of course, free-range under supervision is ok otherwise on the lead. We have survived the fires, and we have survived the lockdown, time to have some fun. The 8kms dirt road in from the highway is an all-weather road, there is no mobile or television reception. Supplies including petrol from Orbost, Cann River, Mallacoota and Eden. Campfires are a must and the serenity, night sky and the stories are infectious to say the least. Come and have some fun with us at the Wallagaraugh :0) Bookings for cabin accommodation 0351588211 Camping and Caravanning no need to book. See more

13.01.2022 Do you have a lost trade that keeps you busy? During the pandemic lots of old arts, crafts and trades are being revived. Dick from Batehaven sent us some photos of wooden boats that he and his friends have built using the art of steam bending.
