10.01.2022 The 6th edition of the Infinity Depth Games took place on 11th to 17th October 2020. Despite the global threat of COVID, with infection rate numbers low in Cypr...us, some countries were permitted to make the journey there. Thirteen athletes from eight countries (Austria, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, India, Japan, Spain and the UK) made their way to compete in the crystal blue waters of Larnaca in Cyprus. Of the thirteen athletes 5 were BFA members, three holding UK passports, one Spanish and one Indian. With four competition days, athletes could choose to consolidate their efforts on one discipline, or tackle all four of the (competition) disciplines. Sea conditions were mostly placid, with current building up enough to cancel just one of the competition days (which was then simply swapped with a rest day). Six national records were set: Christos Papadopoulos (GRE) 85m CWT, Birgit Standhartinger (AUT) 71m, 72m, 73m, 74m CWT, and Selina Samanta (IND) 25m FIM. And despite a lack of opportunity to train depth, our UK freedivers and BFA members executed some cracking dives - Georgina Miller performed a CWT dive to 60m (close to her competition PB from last year); Lorena Prieto Cacabelos, a relative newbie hailing from Spain and based in Cornwall concentrated on FIM and on her last dive made a breakthrough with equalising, getting to the bottom place with air to spare and securing herself first place on the podium in that discipline; Natasha Morrison, just before one of her official tops, broke her goggles and totally unfazed by the ticking of time swapped to a mask, earning a white card and PB with a FIM dive to 30m; and Beci Ryan despite knocking on the door of 40m for some time now, relished the chance of trying to unlock the mastery of equalising! Congratulations to the overall winners Natsumi Mitsuno (JPN) and Christos Papadopoulos (GRE) who competed in all four of the diving categories. And compliments to the organisers, judges, safety team, medics and volunteers running a slick and safe competition takes experience, skill and an eye for detail. With visibility from the surface up to 45m on a good day and 30m on a bad one, the Official Photographer, Daan Verhoeven was able to flex his trigger finger and capture some truly stunning images go check out his FB page or instagram account. Here is just a selection of our BFA members and national record setters with a beautiful portrait of Natasha by Costas Constantinou.
