24.01.2022 Our athletes had a great few days at the National Championships in Perth last weekend. Harry Callow and Jai Gordon (16 years old) finished 5th and 2nd in the Under 18s 100m respectively, with Carter Blades coming 3rd in the Under 16s 400m as a 15 year old. Toowoomba Grammar Track and Field squad had a great weekend bringing home 4 National medals!

24.01.2022 Have you ever completed a gym session in which you suffered severe DOMS (most commonly occurs from a session/exercise with an eccentric focus as shown below) for a couple of days and then performed the same session the next week and didn’t suffer any soreness? This is known as the Repeated Bout Effect. In short, it means your body’s response to a stimulus decreases each time the exercise/session is performed due to the body protecting itself from subsequent eccentric exercises. How it actually occurs is relatively unknown but has been linked to various nervous system, cellular and connective tissue adaptations.

22.01.2022 A massive congratulations to Cory Paix on being named to make his NRL debut tonight. Cory is easily one of the hardest trainers I’ve worked with and deserves all success that comes his way. All the best mate!

22.01.2022 As a Saint Mary’s old boy and assisting in their physical preparation over the past 5 years, I know what it means to pull on the blue and white jersey so I’m happy to be sponsoring the Saint Mary’s Rugby League team again for 2020.

20.01.2022 I have completed a 2 day foundational strength program for young athletes to complete whilst not having access to their normal training sessions. The aim of this program is to build the foundations for strength and athletic development

20.01.2022 I implement wicket runs with a 20m fly in as a tool to improve maximum velocity running mechanics. By placing a constraint on the athlete, the athlete self organises and subconsciously changes their normal running mechanics to the demand of the task, which when done correctly, results in improved posture and front side running mechanics. In this video, a 20m lead in is used with 6 wickets (spacing between wickets dependent on characteristics of athlete), followed by an extra 20m for the athlete to maintain the shape they’ve developed through the wickets by themselves.

18.01.2022 Hope to see former Elite Performance Unit member (which quickly turned into training partner) Cory Paix have a big year and potentially make his 1st grade debut this year!

17.01.2022 A flashback to 2 years ago when the S&C staff trained with the boys for the last training session of the year. It’s great to see how far a lot of this squad have progressed over the past couple of years

16.01.2022 It was good to have a few of the boys come in and do an extra session together on Saturday morning. If you or your team have been affected by the current situation, I’m looking at doing more small group sessions out of World Gym so PM for more details.

16.01.2022 After a massive 2019, I'm looking forward to see what Harry can do in 2020!

15.01.2022 Despite the footy season being cancelled and being at different stages of their football careers, the boys are still coming back in and training together to find ways to keep progressing and improving. It’s no coincidence the boys that work the hardest are generally the ones that get the results. If you want to join in on any future strength or speed sessions we are doing more beginning Monday!

11.01.2022 I had a lot of people do the last session posted so here’s another one that requires very little equipment and done in approximately 30 minutes. Manipulate reps with whatever weights you have. 1a) DB floor press - 40/35/30/25 1b) DB skull crushers - 20/20/15/15 1c) DB Bent over row - 40/35/30/25... 1d) DB side raises - 20/20/15/15 2a) Plate isometric hold - 4x20 secs 2b) Db alt hammer curls 4x8e/arm 2c) banded hammer curls 4x20 3a) banded tricep pullovers 50/40/30 3b) iso close-grip pushup hold 3x20s *approx 60s rest between supersets.

10.01.2022 Although the Rugby League season has come to an end for an indefinite period, the 1sts Saint Mary’s Rugby League team are training as planned. The focus this morning was creating pre tension at the line and increasing force output on the first step. At first I implemented the forward lean with the external cue of uppercutting on the first step to increase force in the first step. At the end of the session we progressed it to a 2 point start, creating pre tension at the line and trying to put it together over 30m.

09.01.2022 Some of the speed/agility/change of direction drills that I covered in a recent filming session. When implementing speed and agility drills it’s important to ensure the drill is specific and transfers to the sport. For example, what is more specific to field and court based sports? Fast feet through ladders or some of the cutting and change of direction drills as shown in this video World Gym Toowoomba Emerging Athlete

09.01.2022 Tristan and I have worked together over numerous years in various systems, and he is now playing his footy at the Gold Coast Titans. He has come a long way since he arrived at Saint Marys from Goondiwindi as a young teenager.

08.01.2022 I would like to welcome Chris Chan as a new Strength and Conditioning Coach. Chris has previously worked within various school S&C programs, possesses a lot of knowledge and will be a huge asset for our teams and athletes.

07.01.2022 Parents, coaches, teachers and club presidents, are you doing enough to ensure your athletes are physically prepared for their return to sport? After long layoffs from regular training and competition, it's likely injury rates will increase, as seen after the NFL lockout in 2010 and more recently in the return of the NRL and soccer overseas. If injury rates are increasing for full-time athletes, what may occur with our developing athletes? Injury prevention strategies for f...ield and court-based sports is multifaceted (strength training, proprioception, jumping and landing, adequate exposure to max velocity running etc), so it's crucial to put measures in place to ensure you're doing your best to minimise non-contact injuries occurring. Reach out if you'd like assistance in training or programming for any individual or team based sport athletes. See more

05.01.2022 Saturday Morning Speed Session The youth squad braved the cold and were in for their second session with me this morning. The main focus is running and jumping mechanics which we will continue to work on over the next four week period as nailing these at a young age sets the foundations for athletic development. The following session involved the senior squad in which we continued to work on linear speed and also touched on some jumping and change of direction work.... Really happy with how both groups are coming along. We’re back on next Saturday for any groups or individuals interested in joining.

04.01.2022 The Saint Marys League boys having abit of fun at the end of the speed/agility session. First race was the best from each position followed by the main event in the heavyweight division. Xavier Vaa (far) v Salle Vaa (close) As much as Xavier debated it I still think Salle gets him on the line.

04.01.2022 I would like to welcome Chloe Mills as a new S&C coach. Chloe is currently completing a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science degree and has a particular interest in training female athletes. Having been involved in numerous S&C roles with various sports, Chloe is a valuable member of the team and will be a great asset for the rest of the year and a busy 2021.

03.01.2022 The Track and Field squad completing French Contrast sets. With an extended period of no competitions has allowed the squad to perform extensive jumps and plyos to prepare for this block. French contrasts with a vertical emphasis as shown below has shown to improve maximum velocity capabilities for athletes when programmed correctly.

01.01.2022 TESTIMONIAL A testimonial from Jake, who I have worked with for a number of years and hope to see him make his first grade debut some time soon!

01.01.2022 All the best to former EPU member and Saint Mary's student Tristan Powell who is playing for the Gold Coast Titans in tonights trial match!
