At 10.00am on Tuesdays, Erin will post something amazing and ... at 10.00am Fridays, Tony will post another extraordinary Wonder If we cant travel these days we will do it in our minds and imagination. With each post well show simple guides to help you. Of course how you do this is entirely up to you, adding your own approach and style. Do look up the subject on Pinterest - one of the most popular image sources around these days. Google images also have great reference. Whatever youre comfortable with, but do get to know the subject before you begin. You will have a few days to work on your sketch, no pressure so you can make it as loose or detailed as you wish, pen, aquarelle water colour or a mix of mediums You can also post on the facebook pages or just keep it for yourself. Erin will be posting the first one on Tuesday 1st of September at 10.00am. Have fun and lets keep this sketch community alive and thriving :)

19.01.2022 Tuesday September 15th 7 Wonders of the Sketch World Challenge Eiffel Tower Paris... Heres a lesson in making very simple, a possibly complex subject. This is one I did ages ago in 10minutes. Its still one of my favourites. You could describe this as a.. Wham Bam, thank you Mam kinda sketch!! Not sure you can say that sort of thing nowadays but you get the drift. This was sketched in the Champ de Mars Gardens, a quiet tree lined park where theres always a bench to sit and observe the families and the ladies walking their dogs. Heaven away from the tourists! The Sketch 1.Start with your biggest main shape - the tower just off centre of your scene. 2. Then the iron lamp post 3. Add the trees, leaving space to put tiny people beneath. 4. Theres a decorative iron shade house there too. Colour. Really very few as you can see. Sky: Cobalt wash Tower: Ultramarine with a dash of purple lake Trees: Sap green and yellow ochre. Dash of burnt sienna on trunks. Lamp post: Hookers Green. Purple lake on the globe. People: Red, yellow, blue. Be creative and see how imaginative you can be. Youll find loads of reference, even your own. Create a scene where youd like to be yourself right now.

18.01.2022 Here's a lovely relaxing sketch for you to try. Leaves in a vase. Look for ones with a variety of colour such as the new growth on the LillyPilly trees. The pink is a warm shell pink. But you may well discover something different. Keep your sketch very loose. Use your chinagraph and drop your watercolour loosely over. Add the next colours before they dry.... This one has no polishing at all. This is exactly how it was when watercolour dried and I'm happy. Being happy is what it's all about. Especially now! See more

18.01.2022 On the Blog Now. Take a look see at our sketches from the week. This is Big Daddy Kanga. Keeping a good eye on us as we sketched his family at Pasture and Co, Currumbin Valley NSW https://erinhillsketching.com//sketching-sketching-everywh

17.01.2022 This week in our Bangalow sketch class we sketched the delightful heritage Newrybar General Store. Love that it’s the Post Office, Real Estate agent, Petrol station, Bottle Store, Flower shop and Community noticeboard. They say it’s going to close for ‘Renovations’. Please keep the character of it people. This street has kept its early buildings and are a joy to sketch. @newrybarhall @harvestnewrybar @erinhillsketching

17.01.2022 This week's Watercolour Sketching now on the blog. https://erinhillsketching.com/blog

16.01.2022 I'm thrilled to see Rosie and Michael Horton's fabulous art collection filmed for this article. We stayed with them earlier this year and were utterly enthralled by the colour and design of every piece, displayed on every wall throughout the house. It's pretty amazing to lie in bed surrounded by such inspiring works. You'll get new ideas for glorious colour combinations as you explore the pieces. They tell wonderful stories and do seem to talk to you. This is a contemporary collection rather than the bark and clay coloured works we knew in earlier times. Take a seat, grab a coffee and enjoy the show. PS. You'll see Michael in the kitchen making my 'flat white'

16.01.2022 Hey everyone. This weeks Australian sketch classes are now posted on the blog. We have some line sketches for you to colour yourselves. Grab yourself some coffee and cake and enjoy. https://erinhillsketching.com//11/sketching-nature-and-cof

15.01.2022 Wonders of the World Parthenon at Acropolis Athens Greece. Tues Sept 22nd. It’s a box. Might be 2500 years old but still a box. It’s easy to be intimidated when you actually find yourself perched on an ancient plinth in front of this fabulous structure. Anyway. I was determined to sketch it even though time was limited. That always helps!!... From my seated position you can see where my eye level was, so my 2 thumbnails were based on what I could see from there. I tried one portrait thumbnail and one landscape shape. Decided landscape. 1. Find yourself a 2000 year old stone plinth to sit on. 2. Observe the ‘box’ in front of you. 3. Make a parallel line where your eye level is. 4. Plan your page - portrait or landscape. 5. Now sketch the outline of the box remembering our mantra - everything above eye level comes down, everything below eye level goes up. 6. Keep the verticals upright (unlike me) 7. Pop in the top ledges and the base. 8. Start with the front corner column and work your way along 9. both sides. I don’t worry about how many columns there are. 10. Add broken roof stones. The surrounds are very rocky and uneven so get some of that in foreground. 13. Put in a few people to show the scale. 14. Plonk your colour on. 15. Now you’re ready to sketch it from life when the world opens again.

15.01.2022 Missing your weekly Watercolour Sketch Classes? - here's a little homework. Copy this one or create your own sketch of a scene near you. Think foreground, middle distance and background. How are you going to distinguish them?... Sketch Tips: Foreground is stronger as it's right in from of you. Soften the middle distance a little and really soften the far distance. Red or warm colour brings you forward. Purple and blues take you away. Use any medium you fancy. Add any little creatures, people, dogs, birds snakes you feel like. Post here and share.

15.01.2022 I've only recently given in to virtual sketching. It feels as if it goes against the grain as I'm not standing in front of the subject, exploring it in real time. But I have begun and I'm simply adding it to my stable of 'another way to sketch'. These are modifications we must make in our lives as we adjust to Covid-19 and how it effects what has been familiar, but no longer is.

11.01.2022 We've been working on eye level perspective this week. Sometimes a building which does the job for eye level/vanishing points etc may not be a thing of great beauty. I'm very fond of ignoring the building once it's down, and dressing it up. See if you can work out what I've done to bring new life to it as a sketch.

10.01.2022 Amazing to see what I was doing 3 years ago today. Sketching with our Tour and awaiting the birth of our first grandson who will be 3 this month. Wed have arrived in Boston yesterday according to my diary and would be with our beloved family and doing our Boston Workshops. Well be there eventually even if we have to do it in a yacht.

09.01.2022 September 1st. Our first 7 Wonders of the Sketch World challenge. The Great Wall of China This could well have been a tricky one to sketch, and of course its the first one in this series!! Oh the pressure.... A wall stretching like a ribbon over a hilly landscape as far as you can see. Thats essentially what it is. I havent done the Great Wall so have no reference sketches or pics of my own. But I was keen to try and good ol Pinterest came up with goods. The reference I decided on was just the right composition with 2 large buildings I could wriggle a wall/path between. The tree forms connected the elements. Simple but effective. Trees are incredibly useful at times. Colours can be whatever you feel like. See if you can find Great Wall reference for yourself or feel free to follow the one Ive done. Use colour and imagination and embellish as you wish. Ive made a YouTube video of the colour process I used which may be of interest. https://youtu.be/6jK1XPDNKn8 No promises that Ill do this every week but please let me know if you found it helpful. Lets get started and do share your work. Were all inspired by what others do. Look out for Tonys post on Friday.

09.01.2022 The world is a better place as a Sketcher. So much happened this week! But we sketchers were heads down and completely immersed in colour - and coffee. All classes on the Blog https://erinhillsketching.com/blog

08.01.2022 Let's go Virtual Sketching This is quite a new way for me to sketch. Ive been a dedicated en plain air sketcher since forever. I pick a subject and get it onto the page right there and then. No messing about.... But we are in a new world with the virus dictating so many of our choices. All sorts of virtual classes, video classes and working from photos have grown out of necessity. Some may be lucky enough to sketch on location, but most people have been in lockdown or in a social distancing situation. It simply hasnt been possible to sketch plain air. So what is a sketcher to do. Its an essential part of our lives and we may have to do things differently now and get used to it. So come with me on my step by step virtual sketch of Cabarita Beach in Northern NSW Australia. I was able to take the photos at the beach as wed gone there to have a picnic. But heres where you can use your own photos, or look up good reference on Pinterest or Uncle Google. https://erinhillsketching.com//virtual-sketching-step-by-s

08.01.2022 A bright last of the year sketch to say goodbye to 2020. My friend Jan brought me some stems of Helaconia yesterday when she and Eva (beautiful granddaughter) visited. Today I had a moment to sketch this magnificent plant with it's tear drop shaped flowers. You'd swear they were plastic. No they're real. Nature is extraordinary. I've done a step by step to inspire you, using my White Knights watercolours while my Cotman's set is drying ( having topped up the paint) Completed... the sketch with a dash of Posaca White pen. Let me know if you'd like to know more about White Knights - my back up paint. Jan and Eva were inspired today as well, and have just sent their sketches. The colours are delicious. Love love. 03.01.2022 Lets go Virtual Sketching This is quite a new way for me to sketch.

02.01.2022 Heres a lovely relaxing sketch for you to try. This is exactly how it was when watercolour dried and Im happy. Being happy is what its all about. Especially now! See more

02.01.2022 The other 'dreaded 'P' word for sketchers! 'People' - that is the other terrifying subject for many, along with 'Perspective'. However with simple 'sausage people' we lose the fear and begin creating fabulous little characters. Our Gold Coast & Kingscliff classes did a wonderful job of people this week. You'll see the full week's sketches from all our groups on our blog later this week.

01.01.2022 I'm often showing new sketchers how we hold our tiny paint set, paintbrush, waterpot, sketchbook, and the essential tissue, all in one hand while out on location. Your other hand is then free to sketch and you can wander around completely self contained. This is the very essence of our Erin Hill Custom sketch kit. Nothing extra needed. We travel light.

01.01.2022 Wonders of the World Parthenon at Acropolis Athens Greece. Tues Sept 22nd. Its a box. Might be 2500 years old but still a box. Its easy to be intimidated when you actually find yourself perched on an ancient plinth in front of this fabulous structure. 2. Observe the box in front of you. 8. Start with the front corner column and work your way along 9. both sides. I dont worry about how many columns there are. 10. Add broken roof stones. The surrounds are very rocky and uneven so get some of that in foreground. 13. Put in a few people to show the scale. 14. Plonk your colour on. 15. Now youre ready to sketch it from life when the world opens again.
