25.01.2022 Now installing Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners! Perfect for beating the heat and the most efficient way to heat a space in Winter.

24.01.2022 This is about Cali but the principle is the same. All electric is "the gold standard"

24.01.2022 Split systems can use 1/13th of the energy of a gas ducted heater. Gas is cheaper than electricity per MJ but only 3 or 4 times, not 13 times. So heating with electricity is cheaper. Even more so if using Solar PV. Make the change this winter.

22.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 7: PV Solar Electricity. If you have checked off all the steps so far, congratulations! Now that you've got your electricity usage about as low as you can without making massive lifestyle changes, it's time to offset your consumption with plenty of production ... How do you know how many solar panels you need? Register with your smart meter now. Depending on which elec distributor area you are in (United, Ausnet etc.), you can go on to their website and sign up to get access to the data logged by your smart meter about your time of usage. If you can't, there are systems such as 'solar analytics' that can do the logging for you. After you have some data, most importantly some winter data, you can have a system designed that will more than cover your usage. That way the money you earn from the excess elec you export (about 11c/kWh) can cover that which you import at night (at about 25c/kWh) and the service fees. Now of course, a good solar system is expensive (and trust me you don't want a cheap one), however when the payback is typically 4-5 years, and a good system will last 30 odd years, it will be paying you money soon enough. There are plenty of companies offering finance for solar systems at low interest rates that will still render it good value. Probably the best way if you have a mortgage is to lump the cost of the system on to that. After 4 or 5 years it will be helping you to pay the mortgage. BANG! $0 energy bills. If you fancy yourself as an early adopter, like the page so you won't miss the final post on power diversion and battery storage.

22.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 3: Gap sealing! Real DIY stuff and yet very few people get in there and do it. I was working in a customer's house one day and moved the bookshelf to reveal a 1/2 inch gap between his floorboards and the skirt. ... There's nothing worse than a draught in winter so, buy/get your caulking gun and 'no more gaps' and do all the window frames, outside door architraves, water pipe penetrations (you may need expanding foam), anywhere where your hard earned warmth or coolth can get away. For sealing doors and opening windows get some draught sealing sticky tubing and for under the outside door's invest in a quality self-closing draught stopper and screw that baby on. You will feel the difference. Enjoy!

16.01.2022 Clear and concise. How to save money on your bills,,, if you're a home owner

16.01.2022 Little things I don't like about living with gas other than it being a fossil fuel on a leaky network and paying an extra service fee. Cook top is hard to clea...n When I'm done cooking, I have to turn the knob back past the highest setting, wasting gas and heat Oven can be hard to light and if you close the door too hard on low, the flame blows out The heater could start producing CO The pilot lights are always on, wasting gas and money See more

13.01.2022 Just registered for curb your power. Cool thing. It's where you try to decrease your usage during peak demand times by 10% and if you manage it, you get paiiid. A step towards knocking off another coal fire generator

13.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 5: Double glazing. I don't care how you do it, just do it. Normally a big ticket item, I once read in a vic gov paper that return on investment takes 263 years on average when you bought from a retailer a couple of years ago. The thermal efficiency gains are significant but the price of buying new can be very expensive. The difference to your comfort levels though will make it value for some. The point here is that anyone can hav...e it. There are many shrink film type products available on line and at your nearest warehouse hardware store where you cut it to size, stick it on with double sided tape and shrink it tight with a hair drier. I've seen people get good results with perspex and double sided tape. There are numerous videos on youtube about how to DIY it with panes of glass. One of which is to cut a V into the nozzle of your window caulk tube and put a thick 20mm bead along all the edges of the existing glass and let dry. Cut your window pane to size and on a day of low humidity, rest the window against the dry bead and then caulk around the edge with a smooth bead this time. Gently rest something on the window it til it dries, sorted! Whilst on the subject I must mention window coverings. Use of outdoor blinds in summer. Thick drapes for keeping warmth in on winter nights and sun out in summer. The use of pelmets has been out of fashion for decades but you can still get the effect with just a flat piece of timber mounted just above the curtains, which is not as obvious as a full pelmet. Enjoy the process. Reap the benefits.

11.01.2022 Even the Herald is onto it. Maybe finally some progress!

11.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 6: Succession plan for inefficient electric appliances. If you have a fridge that is over 10 years old it is probably at least half as efficient as a new very efficient fridge. Fridges are running about half of the day so it's worth getting it right, payback period can be as little as 3 or 4 years. Not only should your new fridge be 5-6 stars, try to get one that uses the new more environmentally friendly refrigerant R600a.... It is important that your old fridge is properly recycled by a council depot equipped to deal with refrigerators, so that the old refrigerant can be safely reclaimed and destroyed, rather than warming the globe. That fridge in the shed, do you really need it or could you just turn it on for parties? That chest freezer, when was the last time you got given half a beast? Is it just full of junk? Little electric element heaters such as fan heaters, bar heaters or column heaters are a big no-no and typically consume 2000W, get rid of it and put the split system on or whatever space heating system the place has. Or put some ugg boots on. Electric blankets, elec throw rugs and elec floor rugs are actually not a bad help, they only consume 40-500W. Any incandescent light globes or halogen downlights should be changed to LED. If your split system AC or "window rattler" is over 15 years old, as with the fridge, replacing it could pay you back quickly and set you on a better path. Desktop computer's are rarely necessary these days and are easily replaced by the much more efficient lap top, about 5 times cheaper to run when on and they more readily go into hibernation which uses next to nothing. Clothes driers are really bad news for energy consumption and they shrink your clothes. Sell it. The good news, they now make heat pump clothes drier's, the bad news, they are inhibitively expensive still.

09.01.2022 A lot happening in the eco house space at the moment: SRES (solar and hot water heat pump rebates) got backing to continue. SolarVic rebate (up to $2250) has come into the market for households that earn less than $180K per year. Fed labor revealed policy for $2K off a battery system (less that $180K) if elected next year. Meanwhile heat pump (split system AC) technology continues to improve and is by far the cheapest way to heat and cool a home.

08.01.2022 Makes sense. Why pay two service fees rather than one? http://www.ata.org.au//all-electric-solar-homes-save-thou/

08.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 8: Storage. A lot of people with PV solar systems struggle to use their power during the day as it's coming down off the roof. When your hard earned excess solar electricity is going out to the grid for a measley ~11c/kWh and you have to pay ~26c/kWh when there's no sun, you may like to say "No way powers that be! I'm keeping my electrons for me". You thought I was going to say batteries. Well I am, but not yet. In fact there ar...e many ways to store your excess energy. It's called power diversion, this is where control is coming to the fore, with systems such as Catch power you can divert excess electricity to your electric hot water service, whether it be an element style or heat pump, free hot water, perfect. In winter if you have floor heating or a split system AC with an app for remote control, you can divert the power to it, so your home is nice and warm when you get home and you won't have to do nearly as much space heating that night. Systems like Catch Power are relatively cheap and easily installed by an electrician, such as yours truly. OK batteries, with Lithium-ion technology improving so rapidly and economies of scale in production bringing the cost down significantly, storage has reached parity. That is, where the cost of the battery and installation is paid for by the electricity you don't have to buy, after about 10-15 years depending on the situation. Now as it stands, most batteries on the market are only warranted for between 10-16 years depending which brand you get, of course they'll work for longer than that period, but at much lower efficiencies. Batteries are a great way to store your e-s for later and save you money but they can also be a money maker. With electricity peak demand on hot days becoming an issue, batteries are being seen as a way to help "smooth" out demand on the grid. With installation of a device in the switchboard, often paid for by the company offering the service (eg. Reposit), they can call on your battery to discharge and support the grid to avoid black outs, and they'll pay you handsomely for the privilege. As with PV solar, battery systems are expensive, but because they pay you back, it's perfectly suited to getting (cheap) finance for. Once again. Everclear Electrical is happy to help with quotes for battery systems, power diversion, solar PV or indeed anything discussed in this series of posts. Passionate about the environment, living comfortably and $0 energy bills! Like and follow for updates. Cheers Michael

07.01.2022 HOW TO GET HOUSE ENERGY BILLS TO $0 Step 4: Install water saving fixtures. Yes it is great for saving water but the clincher is that it saves hot water. If you use less hot water then you save energy not having to heat more up from cold. Water heating is one of the biggest energy consumer's in most household's, so this is a no brainer and is renter friendly too because it's easy to screw on a replacement shower head (and take it with you when you leave )... While on the topic of water, a good way to smooth out temperature spikes and troughs in a house is to introduce thermal mass. You can do this with a fish tank or some similar body of water, a concrete table top, stone bench tops, thick floor tiles or insulated concrete slabs (although mind the carbon footprint of concrete) In winter with your thermal mass in place it's then beneficial to maximise the house's North aspect. Put the thermal mass in the sun and let it soak up the warmth during the day, so that it may give it back to you that night.

02.01.2022 Splits can save you a quarter on your heating bill in Winter over gas. That's without considering savings from no service fee if you were to remove your gas supply or if you have Solar to run your split. That's handy! https://www.youtube.com/watch

01.01.2022 Feeling optimistic after this year's All Energy Conference

01.01.2022 Also plenty of recyclable battery options out there. When the battery is essentially free (it pays you back over time), why wouldn't you put one in to speed our journey to 100% renewables
