25.01.2022 . . We love this style of painting with the kids. Yesterday we used rice instead of rock salt as our sprinkling method. The rice absorbs all water and colour surrounding it, leaving behind a beautiful effect once dry. . Not only do we have some amazing pieces that we can use for crafting later on, but we managed to dye some rice that can be re-used for sensory experiences too! ... . 24.01.2022 . . Earlier on in the week we tried a simple, yet effective experiment. If you havent tried this before, I suggest you do! The amount of questions, and curiosity thrown about was great to see. Children have such wonderous minds. . We simply put some white flowers in water and added some food dye. Within a matter of hours you could see the colour moving through the stem and into the petals.... . Thats how flowers drink water! They drank up all the colour like a rainbow . 24.01.2022 . As we near closer to one of my favourite seasons, we sat down together and talked about all the beautiful colours we could see blooming in our garden. . We could see lots of green, purple, pink, orange and yellow. We also wanted to include blue to match our blue happy sky! ... . 23.01.2022 . . Today we re-visited a much loved experience using shredded paper. Did you know shredded paper can't be recycled? It's too small and clogs up alot of machinery. So what better way than to recycle this ourselves! . Yesterday we soaked our paper in some warm water and whizzed it up in our blender. We strained the water and squeezed out as much as we could by hand.... . It was then a rough ratio of 1 part flour & 4 parts of the pulp. A sprinkle of salt and a good knead. You may need a bit more flour to turn it into a playdough/clay consistency. Last time we used PVA glue, however this time we tried to be a little bit more eco-friendly. . Using our butterfly cutters, we pressed in a thin layer of the clay and have let them sit to dry. The mixture can keep in an airtight container for a week or two. A fathers love is like no other, and today we say thank you for all that you do and will continue to do for our little ones. ... . Our children have been working on some little treats for our Dads these last few weeks. . We made some air dried clay hand prints and turned them into pencil/pen holders. Using our fingers we decorated a shovel and rake making finger print flowers, these sat in a timber holder which we then painted with some paint and sand mixed together. Lastly we decorated our own little nature frame with crystals and dried flowers. . Ive seen these used for Christmas decorations in Winter, but with an ubundance of oranges and lemons at the moment we thought we would give it a go! ... . We sliced them nice and thin, patted them dry and placed then in the oven on the lowest heat setting (fan off). After 2.5 hours they came our crisp and firm. . You can use them in any everyday crafts, potpuri, garlands, or even as an edible beverage garnish! . 21.01.2022 -. . Today we revisited eco-printing! Using some rusty cans, paper, string, flowers, leaves & onion skin, we were able to create these beautiful pieces! . It's as simple as soaking your paper and foliage in some vinegar and water. Then creating a design and spreading out your foliage on the paper. Rolling it up tight in a rusty tin can and tying if off before letting it simmer in some water for 1-2 hours. ... . 19.01.2022 . . I couldnt agree more with this quote. . I struggled as a child learning fundamentals like mathematics, and my times tables. It seemed to take me so much longer than others. ... . I found the only way I remembered was through song, through repetition and some how making it fun. Other subjects like Art and English came easy to me as those were subjects that I loved. Funny isnt it? . The same goes for our children. Especially in the early years. We cant just read to them from a book and expect them to learn. I originally planned to have a little cooking station in our sandpit, but the council decided to trim down our verge tree leaving tons of leaves in our front yard! . So, we decided to roll with this and expand on our original plan. I have big OCD with leaves and bits and pieces in my white sandpit (dont judge ) so we moved everything out onto our grassed area, and filled up a tub with some of our rain water. ... . Adding previous nature finds, flowers and cooking utensils, we created the most inviting experience. 11.01.2022 . If youve got some old candles laying around that have had their time, why not re-use them in a DIY experience with the kids?! . Thank you @muddly_puddly for inspiring me with this awesome experiment. ... . This was a bit more advanced for some of our little ones, and the steps that included hot wax had to be done by me, but other than that I would highly recommend giving this a go. I love involving the children as much as possible and it was truly magical seeing their curious little faces light up. . : ~ Crush up some old candles and fill 4 seperate oven proof bowls with a handful of the wax. We lined our bowls with foil to protect them. Or use something you have dedicated to crazy crafts. . ~ We added roughly two tablespoons of each spice, paprika, tumeric and crushed up old chalk. We added some before melting, and some after. It didnt really matter which order. (I included the children in these two parts as it was easy enough to measure, mix and crush) . ~ Place in the oven for a few minutes or until melted. Taking out every so often to stir. Be careful, its HOT. . ~ Slowly pour into a silicone mould or moulds that are easy to pop things out of, and allow to cool. . ~ Decorate with dried flowers or anything you like before it sets. This part was also enjoyed by the kids. . ~ Wait until fully cooled down before removing from mould...aaanddnd there you have it! . A wonderful way to reuse those old candles and soooo much fun drawing with them. 10.01.2022 . . We have just been flower obsessed over here . Weve been growing them, pressing them, drying them, and now, weve had an opportunity to make them! ... . Using card, scissors a pencil and a glue gun, we got to work on these beautiful pieces. After watching a handful of YouTube/Pintrest videos, we experimented with different petal shapes and techniques. . It really is such a simple process.. a long process, but worth the effort. I found a way to include the children during each step, and I was surprised at how well they picked up on the concept. I suppose craft is life here at Evergreen so the kids have had plenty of practice connecting with their creative side. . We are hoping to make many more in different shapes, sizes and colours to add to our Spring wall display. . 09.01.2022 - . . Today we tried our hand at eco tie-dying for the first time! We used the natural pigment and colour in beetroot which turned out looking amazing. . We boiled our shirts in some salt water before tying them off with elestic bands. We tried different techniques and ways to bunch up the fabric, and really worked on those fine motor skills. A little fiddly, but we gave it our best shot. ... . To make our dye, we sliced up 3 beetroots and let them simmer for about an hour. We then removed our beets (using the scraps in another experience) and then added in our shirts. . 08.01.2022 -. . Our favourite experience yet! This was our first attempt at eco-printing onto paper. After a few days preparing our materials, we finally gave it a try. So in love! . You can also watch my eco-printing highlight for more detail, but below is a brief description on how we achieved our final product. ... . We started off by soaking a range of leaves & flowers in a water and vinegar solution for a few days. During this time I rusted up some cans by giving them a light sandpaper, spraying them with vinegar and leaving them outside. . Today, we started our nature collage on different types of paper. Then, quite tightly, we wrapped our paper collage over the rusted cans. We also had A3 pieces of paper which we folded in half and rolled onto a stick or dowel. Tying everything together with some twine, we placed the bundles in some water and submerged them in a pot. . After cooking on a simmer for two hours, we let them cool before uncovering our amazing pieces. Honestly, the colours that came through were amazing. Some didnt print so well, while others did. I think the trick is to find nature that seeps alot of colour. . We let them dry, gave them a quick iron.. and voil! Photos dont do them justice! 07.01.2022 , . . We sure were busy over the weekend planting the start of our new and improved herb & vegetable garden. . After some research we decided to sow our plants directly into the soil, rather than raised beds. I was a little apprehensive, but we have such rich soil in this space that it seemed a waste not to utilise it as best we can. Has anyone else opted for flat direct garden beds? ... So, today, we spent some time introducing the children to some new herbs and plants that we will be caring for throughout the next few months. . 04.01.2022 . . This morning we enjoyed experimenting with different ways to preserve flowers. We are really loving our calm & mindful Monday mornings. . Method one was laying out our larger flowers in some silica sand. The silica sand will act as a moisture absorbing agent and after a week or so, our flowers will be ready to uncover. We covered these fully, and placed them in a tightly shut container. Watch this space for the final result! ... . Our second method was placing some of our hand selected flowers in our flower press. We drew our pattern with dots and squiggles on our paper towel before using our pipettes to drop water and soak the paper. The colours swirled and spread through the paper causing a marble effect. ... . It was truly magical! . 02.01.2022 . . This morning we extended on our inquiry into natural dyes and prints. Today we experimented with the different colours and tannins that are found in flowers and leaves. . Using our mortar & pestle, water and a little bit of salt we got to griding and crushing our leaves and flowers together. Some collected directly from our garden. After some trial and error and using different types of nature, we managed to extract some amazing colours. ... . The red gum was by far the most vibrant, while others gave off more of a brown tinge. 01.01.2022 . . We have been hanging for these warmer days to start our provocation into butterflies and their life cycle. Butterflies are a big love amongst my kids and we cant wait to explore them further now that weve started to see them floating around. . Today we created some butterfly stones to use in our inquiry these next few weeks. ... . To make these, we simply printed some of Australias local butterflies, cut them out, and by using mod podge, we glued them down onto our rocks. Covering the rock with a good layer of the glue. This seals the print onto the rock. . We also tried this teqnique using some of our pressed pansies, which worked just as well .
