24.01.2022 Today I dropped by the local Pathology Collection Centre to have a little bit of blood collected. As part of the distraction, we chatted about work and the need for nurses. The Nurse went on to tell me about her son who is eleven and his one big career idea to be a DJ. It’s not uncommon for children and early teens to have big and lofty career ideas. I love that kids can dream and have amazing plans for their futures. Children learn about careers through the people and exper...iences around them that’s why it’s so important for kids to have lots of opportunities to learn about careers and work. The conversation turned to learning about careers and I suggested a few things that are the keys for children and teens to get their career planning underway. 1. Make sure your children have lots of firsthand opportunities to learn about work. Talk about what you do, your training for that job, and other jobs that are similar. 2. Let them know that the work you’re doing now isn’t the work you started off in. I am making an assumption here, but most people have had a few twists and turns in their career development. 3. Notice people working wherever you go. Let curiosity kick in and your children to ask their own questions. 4. Notice what your children are interested in and help them to see the links to work. 5. Set up a free account to some excellent career websites. I recommend My Future www.myfuture.edu.au and Job Outlook www.joboutlook.gov.au. Both sites offer lots of reliable career information, tools for discovery and links to discover more. 6. Lastly, and probably most important, encourage them to learn and grow. So, you want to be a DJ, I wonder how you get to do that work. And help them find out. And for your budding DJ - https://www.wikihow.com/Be-a-DJ Photo by Jan Stecha on Unsplash See more

20.01.2022 I’ve got to say, it’s a tough job being a parent. I know. On the back of a few conversations with parents lately, I want to share a few key thoughts on how to guide your teenager or young adult through the maze of career decisions they need to make. 1. Parents you are the experts in your own children. You have watched them all their lives, you know what makes them laugh, the dreams they had at six years old, what fills them up and what drains the life out of them. These are ...your clues! I have a clue list if you’d like more ideas for what those clues might be just ask if you’d like to see it. 2. Why are clues so important? They help parents tap into the likes and dislikes, preferences, hopes, and dreams of your child. Are they sporty, love to read, play music, love/hate maths and much more? All these things give you insight into your unique child and in there are some of the themes that will come through throughout their lives. AND, career ideas and direction often come out of these things. 3. There are so many possibilities out there and it’s hard to know how to guide them. True but think about it, if you have a really good idea of what your child loves to do i.e. use your clues, then you don’t have to know about everything just the things that are right for your son, for your daughter. My advice is to learn what you need to know. Ask questions. Research and find out for yourself, share respectfully with your son or daughter, and keep learning together. There are some really good resources available that are free, reliable, and written in plain language. I’ve put them in the links below. Yes, it’s a tough job being a parent but it’s probably the most rewarding thing you’ll ever do. Go well. 13.01.2022 According to the University of Sydney, this is what employers want from graduates. I'm going to add that they also want skills. Graduates need to be able to do things, have skills. Actually do the job. Free advice Friday; make sure to learn to work whilst you're at university. From your first year, work on the industry you want to work in. Third Year is too late.
