24.01.2022 Chronic lower back pain (CLBP) affects over 50% of the general population. Additionally, it is estimated that over 70% of the adult population will have at least one episode of CLBP within their lifetime (Moon et al., 2013). The risk of developing LBP is multifactorial and includes several factors such as physical inactivity, being overweight, poor lumbar extensor and trunk flexor strength, slumped sitting positions, hip flexor or hamstring tightness, poor movement awareness..., smoking status, stress and many more (Harreby, et al., 1999). Findings from systematic reviews of trials into the prevention of low back pain show that only exercise interventions seem to be effective (Balague’ et al., 2012). It comes as no surprise that as Australia’s rates of physical inactivity and obesity rise, so too does the incidence of low back pain. If you are suffering from lower back pain or are prone to recurring episodes of lower back pain, why haven’t you seen your health care professional (exercise physiologist/physiotherapist) to help manage the condition? You should be taught how to correctly perform the most primitive movements such as the deadlift and squat. Mobilise your hips and thoracic spine whilst learning how to effectively hinge at the hips and load through your hip extensors. Strengthen your trunk flexors and lumbar extensors which will act to stabilise your spine. Increasing your body’s resilience through strength training and habitual awareness of movement in all activities might offer the highest defence against injury.

09.01.2022 Basics of Endurance Training. To improve any physiological function in your body you must stress that function, simple. The body adapts to the demands placed upon it. If for instance we stress our heart through cardiovascular training, the heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood around the body to the working muscles. The muscles we use (legs in cycling) adapt and increase in mitochondria which in turn increase in the ability to aerobically supply energy, the capillary...Continue reading
