01.01.2022 Child protection issues for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are changing. Where there used to be many migrants from Africa, there has s...ince been a rise in refugees from the Middle East. So different approaches are needed. James Butler and Caree-Ann Alfred, two FACS employees, recognised the need and responded and as a result were recognised for their work winning FACS Mary Dimech Team Multicultural Award. Caree-Ann is a Casework Specialist and James is a Community Program Officer in the Hunter New England district. There is such a wide range of work being done to support multicultural communities and just to be nominated was an honour, said James. The pair organised a child protection forum in the Hunter in August 2015 to inform the CALD community on the child protection system and help them find services they might need. They are already planning the next forum in August 2016. James and Caree-Ann worked with the Hunter Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC) who rallied to get speakers and participants from non government organisations and the health and education departments. The success of this forum went beyond just our local team. Our MAC partners did a great job too and without their contribution and effort the forum would not have been as successful, said James. The forum gave participants the chance to hear about the work of caseworkers. It helped to break down some of the stigma around Community Services and informed attendees on the role that Safe Home For Life changes will play in supporting at risk families to maintain a safe home for children.
