17.01.2022 The National Breast Cancer Foundation is Australia’s leading national body funding game changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public. Since 1994, NBCF has awarded over $171 million dollars to 534 breast cancer research projects across the country. The five year survival rates for breast cancer has increased from 76% to 91%. 14.01.2022 On our recent trip down to Tasmania I caught up with Niekia Ryan, for those of you who don’t know, Niekia is the catalyst & primary reason for creating the event, Fighting Cancer. She is a young mother of 2 children & has just undergone her 5th round of Chemotherapy & will be having a potential double mastectomy at the end of her chemotherapy rounds. She is brave, powerful beyond measure & the way she has handled this so far is nothing short of empowering. In a recent disc...ussion with her I asked her what are the 3 hardest aspects of the journey so far, in sharing her response we are hoping that this may help, inspire & lift anyone going through similar experiences to let them Know that they are not alone in this journey. well I'm sort of in limbo atm until we know whether I've had a complete response to the chemo and can remove the potentially dead tumours through surgery (find out more after the contrast mammogram in April), or whether it will require radiotherapy after the surgery and has spread. Still lots of unknown. That is one of the 3 things I struggle with the most atm, the unknown. How much time does this give me? Am I creating further damage to my body through the chemo?? The control we are all used to having over our own lives being taken away. 2nd thing is the intense body pain and fatigue, doesn't seem like much to be tired but honestly Jack, this last round was excruciating for 6 long days. I struggled to stay out of bed for longer than an hour, from my ears to my toes is in pain and it only gets worse each round. The 3rd and certainly hardest part for me, is not physically and mentally being able to mother my children as they deserve. Only a parent can understand how difficult it is to hear your baby cry and not have the ability to soothe him - whether it be the lack of physical strength to lift him or the fear of infecting him with chemo drugs. The constant questioning of whether it will all be worth it..for them. In a nutshell, that's where I'm at, please let me know if I can elaborate anything further. 13.01.2022 In November 2019 Niekia found a lump in her breast. After a trip to the dr, a mammogram and a biopsy it was discovered that she had grade 3 breast cancer. Niekia has two young children, Lilah 6 and Eli 1, and a loving supportive partner, Nick. Niekia had just started back at work as a medical receptionist after her maternity leave with Eli. As the breast cancer was classed as aggressive, chemotherapy needed to be started ASAP, forcing Niekia to leave her job and concentrate... on her treatment and recovery. She is the driving force behind Jacks determination to raise money for her and Breast cancer research.
