23.01.2022 Pike! Yellowtail! whatever you call them they are a great live bait, accounting for many Estuary Cod, Longtail Tuna, Kingfish and many more species found in Moreton Bay. They make great flesh/strip baits as well for Bream and Snapper. Found around the many reefs, wharves and structure in the Bay they are great fun to catch from any of the local jetties as well using a set of bait jigs or a paternoster rig with a small hook and a piece of red or yellow wool jigged up and down.... I have never bothered eating them as they are very oily with a soft flesh but had been told they were quite good prepared correctly. I finally decided to catch a few, did some in the smoker, took them to a mates place where he fried some in oil and I must say they were quite good, certainly not bad! 3/5 stars for me. Talking to locals catching them on the jetties they say "very good for fish cake too." https://youtu.be/-U_dLAKPXiA See more

22.01.2022 One of the crossings on Obi Obi Creek downstream from Baroon Pocket Dam before it flows into the Mary river near Kenilworth. Plenty of life but was too cold to place the cameras in deeper spots where larger fish would be. https://youtu.be/IGOgn0e6Nvo

22.01.2022 Quick trip across Northern Moreton Bay in the afternoon last week when I lost my rod overboard. https://youtu.be/HTAaUg8vcB4 Live pike counted for a few cod which are alway great on the plate.

21.01.2022 I dont normally share other stuff on my page but "John Platten" was a great Science Master/Teacher at my high school years ago. He does some cool underwater baited videos similar to mine on the reefs around Central Qld. Expert commentary too. https://www.youtube.com/cha/UCGpo9xxnPGx7_NHcqiYBdGg/videos

20.01.2022 The ponds I have at the moment. The 2 with bubbles have Honey Blue Eyes - Pseudomugil mellis. The kidney pond with the cheap solar powered fountain has nothing right now so Im looking for either, other types of Blue Eyes or Ornate Rainbowfish - Rhadinocentrus ornatus in either Blue or Red. Also wondering how Threadfin Rainbows would go? Sunny position close to Moreton Bay in North Brisbane. This pond will go clear once all the plants take hold so Ill be able to film. https://www.youtube.com/playlist

20.01.2022 Beautiful morning on the water in Northern Moreton Bay. Made it home before the wind came up. Went chasing mackeral originally but not much luck there so went livebaiting and came up with a few nice cod again. Lost a few good fish to structure and pulled hooks too and the first Queenfish Ive seen in the bay, she did well to get that one in on light gear!

19.01.2022 I havent been out on the water myself much lately, due to weather, work, covid, boat maintenance etc but at least my young fella is getting into some fish. These Estuary Perch(a close cousin of the Australian Bass) were caught in Sydney on lures, land based at night.

19.01.2022 Its definitely that time of year, The kings are on at Moreton too

18.01.2022 10 Years ago my young fella in "The Pine"

17.01.2022 Some pics from today, The reefs off Suttons beach hold some fish, there has been some nice snapper caught land based there lately. Just be aware of the green zone as I see people fishing in it all the time, even today.

16.01.2022 This was a few years ago. But this is the time of year to go and get those kingfish!

15.01.2022 a few years ago, the amount of life at different times at Curtin Artificial Reef amazes me

15.01.2022 and this time last year

13.01.2022 Chip off the old block, the young fella with a couple of lure caught Jewfish in southern Sydney.

13.01.2022 My Native Stingless Honey Bees Austroplebeia australis on my Water Lilies. So hard to catch them on camera.

12.01.2022 This really Sucks!!! Lost the fish too!! Stradic 8000, can't remember the rod details but wasn't cheap either! https://youtu.be/HTAaUg8vcB4

12.01.2022 Shorncliffe Pier Jewfish! I have snorkelled, dived and filmed many different jetties and piers around QLD and NSW, each time I find the majority of fish and life is directly underneath. I see most people that fish these places casting away from the structure. I still keep telling people "The fish are underneath!" I also hear Shorncliffe Pier is "fished out" because people dont catch much. I beg to differ!... https://youtu.be/sDKewpg2iGk

11.01.2022 Beautiful day on Northern Moreton Bay until the 15-20 knot NE wind against an outgoing tide on the way home made things tough going. Fish would not play the game today either, tried my usual spots, plenty of bait but no fish. Ended up at Tangalooma to try for Kingfish when 3 decent cod saved the day. Squid Pic part of underwater video to come. Edit - video here, https://youtu.be/aRiJnEqAO7c

10.01.2022 Bramble Bay dugong and small shark. https://youtu.be/H3iDuIZhD40

09.01.2022 Off Redcliffe today https://youtu.be/gyL5V_Ap98w

09.01.2022 Im thrilled my underwater videos are being put to use for scientific research. Ive given permission for them to be used for a display at "Moreton Bay Discovery Centre" (MBDC) and for a project called "Moreton Bay Live" that will install underwater video cameras in Moreton Bay, then use computer models to automatically identify and count fish species in the footage. Check this out https://globalwetlandsproject.org/tools/moreton-bay-live/... https://www.youtube.com/playlist

09.01.2022 And the young fella is at it again! Middle of Sydney, way up the Georges River and he pulls a 75cm Kingfish on a 6lb Bream outfit with 1000 reel, while chasing Estuary Perch.

09.01.2022 Had some engine issues, so haven't been able to take advantage of the beautiful weather lately. After alot of mucking around, fuel pump, carby clean etc it ended up being water in the fuel. Emptied and cleaned the fuel tanks, bought a filter and was amazed how much water there was again. Premium unleaded from Coles at Pelican Park. Got out today though to chase some squid and let a friend spread their mums ashes off Woody Point. Still plenty of them around.

07.01.2022 EDIT - thanks everyone I have what I need now Looking for a pic of a flathead lay in Hi Res, to use in magazine article, must be yours and permission for me to use it.

06.01.2022 On the weedbanks near Bulwer Moray Eels are such fascinating creatures. This one enters the frame like its riding on a horse. https://youtu.be/CIfP_ur6J5w

06.01.2022 Had a few livebaits left over at lunchtime https://youtu.be/Hxd-HfwEEVg

05.01.2022 I was asked to catch some natives for a local schools fish tank. The North Pine River behind the Petrie Historical Village is a great place to catch Crimson Spotted Rainbowfish M. doubulayi. Traps baited with bread for about 5min on the waters edge scored about 100 fish so we kept about 30. This is also a great spot to catch natives such as Bass, Yellowbelly, Silver perch and Spangled Perch with by catches of Tilapia and Lungfish see videos here --> https://youtu.be/Qn7AsGRKLG0 https://youtu.be/lYrP3aXaCc0

05.01.2022 Bream feeding with a stingray at Sandgate Foreshore https://youtu.be/UKZv2TSBynU

05.01.2022 Caloundra Rock Pools Amazing the amount of life, the little Blennies are my favourite. https://youtu.be/95dPqZPh_0Q Heres one I prepared earlier https://youtu.be/Dg3HSSM5t7U

05.01.2022 I know its not fishing or fish related but this is the new addition to the yard. Ive wanted native bees for awhile now and finally acquired some. These are tetragonula hockingsii - the more northern tropical species. See hi def video here https://youtu.be/co8GIe7ja1k

04.01.2022 Under Shorncliffe Pier, Seems to be the time of year for Bream. Some huge ones amongst them too. https://youtu.be/CTqziRcvHz4

04.01.2022 My ponds are loving the warmer weather. The fish are showing courting behaviour, the lilies are powering and already throwing pups. The resident fish are Honey Blue Eyes - Pseudomugil mellis, and Teewah Creek Ornate Rainbowfish - Rhadincentrus ornatus commonly known as "Rhads" to native enthusiasts. Both fish are frog friendly.

03.01.2022 I wasn't that impressed with the "Twin Bridges" at Fernvale, Savages Crossing was better. Still its a great place to collect as it has plenty of Rainbowfish, smelts, gudgeons, pacific blue eyes, hardy heads and gambusia. Maybe next time I will take the blow up boat and paddle around. I think this area would be very busy in warmer months though! https://youtu.be/7PfXvnPOOAQ

02.01.2022 A few years ago, this is a great little spot. National park so no collecting! Make sure you watch the video.

02.01.2022 Tangalooma Seagrass Beds Moreton Island, this is in front of the Sandhills near where the ferry stops north of the wrecks. Wobbegongs are always cool, the live pike got eaten after the camera battery ran out. https://youtu.be/ksMFJ5qmFTI Make sure you checkout the rest of my tangalooma videos, link here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist

01.01.2022 Dropped the camera at Woody Point Jetty yesterday and caught some Tiger squid while waiting. Video to come. Tried Shorncliffe Jetty today, no squid but some cool fish on the camera this time! I hear alot that the jetty is fished out but wow there is some life down there!!! I tell people all the time the fish are under the jetty not 50m away where they cast. Video to come.
