25.01.2022 Reminder that Bush Buddies is on this Sunday! New members very welcome!

25.01.2022 A heart-warming message from our Bushcare Coordinator, Barb. We’re really grateful to the children of Blackwood Kindy who have donated some money on Wednesday during their Nature Play activity in the Park. A wonderful total of $233.00 was raised, with coins placed on The Money Tree. The children have earned the coins by doing jobs at home, and have chosen to donate to the Friends of BNP, to buy some plants to help increase the habitat for the bandicoots. These keen youngs...ters enjoy the Park, and especially the animals they see! They may be able to help us with planting for the bandicoots next year. Here's to inspiring the next generation of conservationists, creating positive action to help our planet Pete

25.01.2022 Getting in an early dinner before having to hunker down for the wild weather expected tonight. Hayley

24.01.2022 Great morning's work today with the usual bushcarers joined by a keen group of 17 Heathfield High school students and their teacher doing an outdoors classroom with us in VMU 34. Beautiful weather and a great bonus discovery of a couple more patches of Pterostylis cucullatas. (Leafy Greenhood orchids.) A very productive and enjoyable morning. - Stevo R.

24.01.2022 This is the 'Leafy Greenhood' (Pterostylis cucullata), a nationally endangered plant with a barely sustainable population in #belairnationalpark. There's been a lot of hard work done over the years by the Native Orchid Society of SA (NOSSA) and the Threatened Plants Action Group (TPAG) in terms of species conservation and habitat restoration to help this little orchid flourish. To save just one plant is conservation in action, to help save a population of them warms the heart Pete https://spapps.environment.sa.gov.au//speciesinformation.h

24.01.2022 #florafriday this Sundew (Drosera) is a carnivorous plant native to #belairnationalpark. Looks like this one's caught a piece of bark, not a bug A stunning photo, thanks to Peter Bos Pete

24.01.2022 I'm sure all appreciate that this pandemic lockdown is about the health and safety of all South Australians. As a result, Belair National Park is CLOSED for ALL activities. The Friends of Belair has cancelled all activities until further notice. Stay safe, look out for each other and we'll see you in (hopefully) a few days.

24.01.2022 Happy Father's Day! In #BelairNationalPark you can see the best of the best bird fathers around - emus! Did you know the dad emu does all the work raising the chicks, from sitting on the eggs for many weeks to then protecting them and caring for them as they grow? Pictured below is a great dad emu with his chicks in the park a few years ago. Go dad emus! ... Hayley Photo by Bevin Scholz

24.01.2022 Yesterday's Guided Walk was a great success with twenty people led by our highly knowledgeable guide Pete Raine enjoying ideal weather and our park at its blooming best - to quote former 'Gardening Australia' show host, Peter Cundall. We walked through marvellous Eucalyptus obliqua (Messmate Stringybark) woodland with an understorey of mainly Pultanea daphnoides (Large-leaf Bush Pea) and Acacia myrtifolia (Myrtle Wattle) plus a diverse groundcover layer of herbaceous wildflow...ers, grasses and grass like plants e.g. sedges and, of course, native orchids! Some of the highlights included a "carpet" of Hibbertia (Guinea flower) species mixed with Caesia callinatha (Blue-grass Lily), a huge patch of Arachnorchis tentaculata (King Spider a.k.a. Green Comb Spider Orchid), plenty of Scaevola albida (White Fanflower) among so many more. A great walk enjoyed by all. Photos by Alan and Pete Raine. - Stevo R.

22.01.2022 'They' say porridge in winter is like a warm hug for your insides, I say a mum and joey koala hug is porridge for the soul. Seen today on our guided walk. Thanks to all that came along. Picture thanks to Will Sonn. Pete

21.01.2022 #BelairNationalPark is important habitat for so many creatures, not just the well known often seen ones, but also too the small ones hiding in plain sight Southern Whistling Moth (Hecatesia thyridion) Hayley

21.01.2022 GUIDED WALKS TUESDAY 11th AUGUST, SUNDAY 16th AUGUST. Have you been spotting native orchids in #BelairNationalPark lately? Come along to our free guided walk on Tuesday August 11th and you might spot some of these little treasures in the bush. Meet at 1.45pm at the Green Shed for a leisurely 2 hour walk with an expert guide. ... Free entry for all attending. (Walk repeat on Sunday 16th August) Hayley Clockwise from top left: Nodding Greenhood (Pterostylis nutans) Bluebeard Orchids (Pheladenia deformis) Veined Helmet Orchid (Corybas diemenicus) Dwarf Greenhoods (Linguella sp. Hills nana syn. Pterostylis nana) Mayfly Orchids almost in full flower (Acianthus caudatus)

21.01.2022 Our Friends group celebrated our 35th birthday this week! We are one of the oldest Friends of Parks groups in the state. There was food, cake and awards, with many members in attendance from new members through to founding members of 35 years!

21.01.2022 Make sure you tune into Gardening Australia on Friday night to watch the segment on the gardens at Old Government House. These gardens are in the middle of #BelairNationalPark, and are a big part of the history of the park. Many of our dedicated volunteers give their time to both the Friends of Belair National Park, and the Friends of Old Government House. I was lucky enough to have Steve, Mary, and Barbara show me the gardens a couple of weeks ago and they're just beautifu...l. As the gardens are currently closed to the public it's a great opportunity to see them on Gardening Australia this Friday night! Hayley

19.01.2022 It's National Threatened Species Day. Did you know that #BelairNationalPark is home to threatened species? Some of the last remaining habitat for endangered species such as Leafy Greenhood orchids, Pink-lipped Spider Orchids, and Southern Brown Bandicoots, is found and protected at Belair National Park. Take a moment today to read up on National Threatened Species Day https://www.aph.gov.au//Se/National_Threatened_Species_Day... And also about the rate of native species extinction in South Australia since European arrival, and some of the lesser known threatened species in our state. https://www.environment.sa.gov.au//threatened-species-day- Hayley

19.01.2022 Unfortunately, due to a Total Fire Ban for the Mt Lofty Ranges and forecast temperatures exceeding forty degrees Celsius; tomorrow's regular Friday Bushcare session has had to be cancelled. Hopefully weather permitting we'll be back on Tuesday again. -Stevo R

18.01.2022 A beautiful spring day in cool sunshine for our repeat of the September guided walk. 15 people shared knowledge about our native wildflowers and ecology of Grey Box Grassy Woodland and none were disappointed. Thanks to all who came along! Pete

18.01.2022 Our monthly meeting was today. Sadly the guest speaker from The City of Mitcham cancelled at the last minute Happily though, we had back-up! Mark, our President, showed us some amazing photos from his collection that caused audible gasps and 'wow' moments as he talked about 'Light and Shade' - the framing of images and what to do to make a 'simple picture' into a 'stunning photograph'. (See below) I, nor FB's watering-down of image quality can do the images justice, but w...e thank Mark for filling in at the last minute. He deserved the applause he got. Moving forward, the #FriendsofBelair have got a busy month ahead as the NPWS 'Park of the Month'- check our socials for more info Pete

18.01.2022 Despite the weather three of us attended the Tuesday August Guided Walk. Among the flowering wattles, interesting fungi and more seen was this beatiful little patch of Pterostylis linguella (Hills Nana) Greenhood orchids. We didn't even get (too) wet! :-) - Stevo R.

18.01.2022 Great morning's Bushcare today with ideal weather & an excellent turnout of volunteers. A very productive couple of hours spent removing mainly Chrysanthemoides monilifera (Boneseed) plus some feral dog / briar rose (Rosea sp), Genista monspessulana (Montpellier Broom) & others off Yulti Wirra track. Then some of volunteers enjoyed a nice first session of the month coffee afterwards. Spring off to a great start! :-) - Stevo R.

17.01.2022 Nice cool morning for our Saturday bushcare session. We had 9 people enjoy the park in all its October splendour Pete

17.01.2022 For the dedicated Saturday bushcarers who generously gave a total of 50+ hours of your own time to help nature in the last couple of months, this one's for you A 'Blue Fairies' orchid (Pheladenia deformis), flourishing after removal of invasive weeds. Thanks for caring, Pete

17.01.2022 So, we cancel bushcare and it doesn't rain so I go for a walk and Sun-orchids are flowering. Sometimes you just can't win! Ugh, weather! Understand though, it's more than getting wet, there's a safety side of things to consider; and in stormy weather it's just not safe. Pete Thelymitra luteocilium - Fringed Sun-orchid

17.01.2022 Reminder for tomorrow's guided walk. So many beautiful flowers to see.

17.01.2022 Calochilus platychilus (Woodland Bearded Orchid) next to a small Arachnorchis tentaculata (King / Green Comb Spider) orchid. Great different natives seen after today's bushcare session & on yesterday's walk. - Stevo R

16.01.2022 Blue Pincushions (Brunonia australis) are putting on a fabulous display in #BelairNationalPark this weekend. Head to the Upper Waterfall area to see these amazing flowers en masse at the moment You'll always spot a purple one or two among the blues so keep your eyes peeled! Hayley

16.01.2022 It was really disappointing to cancel the September session of Saturday Bushcare last week, due to forecast rain (that never came). So ... we've decided to reschedule for this Saturday (26/09/20) instead, and the weather 'should' be more favourable. The plan is to work in some pristine bush and 'patrol for weeds', but essentially it'll be a nice walk through one of the best parts of #BelairNationalPark with a focus on learning and sharing knowledge, followed by coffee and... cake at the Sheoak Cafe (as tradition dictates). No need to RSVP, just be sure to wear suitable clothing for the weather. We'll meet at the Green Shed, near Main Oval at 0900 and go from there... If you can make it, great! If you can't, I'm sure we'll share some pictures of the beautiful things so you won't miss out Pete

16.01.2022 For 8 (?) years, Professor Chris Daniels has spoken to our group. He's always such an engaging and interesting speaker and today was no different. Part depressing and part uplifting, Chris talked about the little critters and their role in maintaining the ecology of places like Belair as 'gardeners' to improve soil and ecosystem health. Thanks to all that came along. We feel sad, yet hopeful, that we can continue our work for habitat. Please keep your cats inside.... Pete

16.01.2022 Saturday bushcare this morning.. A beautiful damp yet inspiring morning's effort removing invasive weeds in a pristine spot. . It's incredibly rewarding just being in such beautiful places, but to help make them even better is such a privelige. We love it! Thanks to all that came along and don't forget our guided walk tomorrow afternoon from 1:45, meeting at the Green Shed... Pete

16.01.2022 Great little patch of Diuris orientis commonly known as Donkey orchids seen during this morning's bushcare session. Hopefully more of these beauties will be seen later this arvo on our Tues monthly Guided Walk. - Stevo R

16.01.2022 Today is #WorldAnimalDay and here at #BelairNationalPark we are lucky to be providing and protecting valuable habitat for many species of animals! Why not celebrate World Animal Day with a walk in the park to see how many native animals you can spot ... Hayley

16.01.2022 Come along tomorrow afternoon for a great guided walk in #BelairNationalPark You'll get to see native orchids, wildflowers, and maybe a koala or kangaroo! Free, and family friendly!

16.01.2022 September 1st is Wattle Day and the first day of Spring! Looks like a cracking start to a new season too! Acacia melanoxylon, Blackwood wattle. Pete

15.01.2022 We had our annual 'Cleland Walk' today. A stroll in nature, looking at flora, fauna and talking about why #belairnationalpark is so special. We learned, we walked and we shared knowledge on a sunny spring day! Thanks to those who came along! A reminder that we have the October #friendsofbelair guided walks very soon, Tuesday (13th) and Sunday(18th) of October. ... Be great to see you then! Pics: a general group shot, a Grass-tree flower, and... a guide, thanks to StevoR Pete See more

14.01.2022 **IMPORTANT NOTICE*** Sadly, we've no choice but to CANCEL the Guided Walk scheduled for tomorrow. It seems the weather gods are against us (again) and a Total Fire Ban means we have no choice but to suspend all activities. To say we are disappointed is an understatement, but public safety comes first. Hope people understand. ... Pete Considering rescheduling to next weekend, if anyone would be interested, let us know. We've done so much work preparing for this one too. Oh well I'll get the walk notes published on our website (thanks Chris) so you can at least see what we were going to look at and make it a 'self-guided walk' in cooler times.

13.01.2022 Philadenia deformis, Bluebeard orchid. Photo thanks to Pete Raine. Curently blooming in Belair NP.

13.01.2022 Part Two of a big day yesterday with a very successful and pleasant Tuesday Guided Walk. Among other highlights, we were lucky enough to see open Thelymitra ixioides (Blue-spotted Sun orchid), Calochilus platychilus (Woodland Bearded orchid) even some still flowering Greenhood orchids including a Pterostylis nutans (Nodding Greenhood) and some great patches of Caladenia Carnea. This walk will be repeated this Sunday starting at the Green Shed at 1.45 pm. - Stevo R with photos courtesy of Bevin Scholz.

12.01.2022 Before tomorrow's bushcare session, here's some highlights of our excellent Friday morning one in VMU 34 featuring an Ajuga australis (Austral Bugle) and the wonderful view from the top of the hill. Plus one of the slightly battered but still blooming Pterostylis curta (Blunt Greenhood ) flowers seen as we worked. - Stevo R.

10.01.2022 **IMPORTANT NOTICE** Guided Walk and Bushcare for Tuesday 10 November 2020 - CANCELLED Hi all - If the forecast weather for tomorrow was in February or March, it would likely be considered as a 'Catastrophic Day'. Strong, hot northerlies and 'warm' ambient temps and just yukky humid weather. As a result, the Friends of Belair have decided to cancel all activities for tomorrow. ... This includes the usual Bushcare and the scheduled Guided Walk. We will have the repeat Guided Walk on Sunday (15th November), and hope to see you then. As they say, "if not tomorrow, then when?".... Lets try on Sunday hey?! We hope you understand. Pete See more

08.01.2022 Given the forecast storms, today's rescheduled Guided Walk is cancelled. I promise we'll get it done soon, but it's not safe nor sensible to be out in yucky weather. Don't forget you can access the walk brochures on our website: http://www.friendsofbelairpark.org.au/activities.html Pete

08.01.2022 Bush Buddies September report: It was a very small but enthusiastic group for September Bush Buddies, on a beautiful spring morning.... no place I would rather be! We checked our plantings from the last session and all were doing well and then moved to Playford lake for the start of a walk along Moorowie, Lodge, Carrawatha and Brady Gully tracks. Lots of orchids were out, including dense patches of donkey orchids and the first of the purple cockatoo orchids. Plants were fl...owering everywhere and it was fun spotting the little splashes of colour and amazingly intricate detail through to the brilliant explosions of colour such as dense patches of twiggy bush pea absolutely covered in their orange, red and mauve flowers. Lots of wildlife too with an echidna seen going about its business, lots of different birds, and many very relaxed kangaroos, including a number of mothers with curious joeys in pouches, happy to pose for photos. We even saw two brown snakes mating - you never know what you will see if you get out there in nature! - Craig Baulderstone Photos by Jo Baulderstone - clockwise from top left: group walking, Early Nancy flowers, patch of Donkey orchids, western grey kangaroo, blue Squill flowers, yam Daisy.

07.01.2022 Wonderful morning working in VMU 31 today. Saw a lot of these flying beetles. Hard to photo (& video!) but did get this clip in the end. Blurry at start & when they're flying but improves with a couple of them on the ground at the end. Lots of beaut native wildflowers including plenty of different orchids out now too. - Stevo R

06.01.2022 Part one of a big day for the Friends today working in regenerating Eucalyptus obliqua (Messmate Stringybark) woodland off Queen Jubilee Drive in VMU 38. A very pleasant session in ideal weather & a field of Ranunculus lappaceus. (Native Buttercups.) We were also joined by our District Head Ranger Jen Pitman as well as some TAFE students adding to the regular crew of bushcarers. Now for a short break before the first of our October Guided Walks starting in a few hours by meeting at the Green Shed at 1.45 pm. - Stevo R

04.01.2022 Snakey Sunday because I saw my first snake for the season and it was awesome! Lets talk about our serpentine friends and share some salient snake snippets. There are 36 species of Joe Blakes in South Australia (including marine species)... All snakes are reactive. That means they dont plan to bite or harm a human, but if youre in its escape route; you should give it space. It wants to get away, because it cant eat you or mate with you. They will try and avoid confrontation The average size of a Brown Snakes fangs is 2.8mm, and the fangs are not like a hypodermic needle, the venom discharges from the back, above the tip (so wearing long pants of heavy material will avoid envenomation to the skin) 75% of initial strikes are dry with not a drop of venom injected they save that for prey that can be eaten later 90% of bites that envenomate, are the result of people (usually male, often intoxicated) who are trying to catch or kill the snake There are around 3,000 snakebites in Australia each year, with recent figures showing around 550 hospitalisations and an average of TWO deaths per annum. All snakes are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 (NPW Act), so you are breaking the law to kill it. If its in the bush, give a snake some space and feel lucky to see it. If its in your house or yard, call an authorised snake catcher. Snakes are awesome, special creatures with as much right to live here as us - we live in the urban / bush interface, so they are a part of life in Belair, but respect them. (information from my notes from Geoff Coombe Living with Wildlife, RFDS Snakebite Statistics 2020 and Google/Wiki) https://www.flyingdoctor.org.au//outback-survival-snakes-/ Pete

04.01.2022 Hi gang, stay tuned, but it seems likely that we'll have to cancel the Saturday Bushcare session due to forecast bad weather. I'm hoping not, but we'll see Watch this space... Pete

04.01.2022 We had a wonderful event last Saturday for the reopening of Old Government House. The refurbishment of the Coach House and upgrades to the garden were funded ...by the Australian Government under the Adelaide City Deal. #AdelaideCityDeal Live music from St. John's Junior String Ensemble, a visit from members of the Victoriana Society, and lots and lots of guests. Admittedly the weather could have been kinder, but it was still warm enough for a delicious afternoon tea on the Terrace. And if you were wondering who made the fabulous Victoria Sponge, and the Jubilee Cake - it was Coromandel Bakery. If you missed out, there's good news. We will be opening this coming Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm, and as an experiment we will offer afternoon tea. $5 entry or $10 if you want refreshments. We accept MasterCard or Visa, and of course cash. The weather looks like it's going to be perfect, so look forward to seeing you there. We have worked out a one-way route through the House and Servants' quarters which complies with Covid Social Distancing. #BelairnationalPark
