25.01.2022 We've known for a while that Google Maps has not been showing the complete area of the park (it just disappeared over a year ago). Despite numerous complaints nothing has happened. If you want or need an online map of the area, you can use Open Street Map. It's free and open source and also shows many of the walking tracks in the park. You can also get an app (Osmand) and download maps for offline use, which is useful given the quality of phone signal in the area. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=11/-37.8510/144.2072

22.01.2022 Our Friends Group has been collaborating with students from the Lumineer Academy in Williamstown, helping them build bird nest boxes for their backyards. Their ...report is below, as well as a photo of their creations. Dear Friends of Brisbane Ranges, We are students from Lumineer Academy and we are building bird boxes. We are building these bird boxes for birds who have been losing their homes and to save birds from bush fires. Their nests and homes are breaking from extreme weather (like wind). We needed to make sure the materials like cardboard didnt break in the weather. To find out which materials were strong and waterproof we did experiments. We found that metal was strong when it was windy, sticky tape and foil is waterproof. We didnt use cardboard because it is not waterproof. We put our nests outside in a tree up high to protect birds from cats. We didnt use stands so cats cant climb up. Some of us wrapped leaves around our nest to camouflage it. We are also sending this message to our neighbours in a letter so we can encourage them to do the same. We want to know how else we can spread this message. We have attached some pictures of our designs. You can share these to encourage other people to do the same! From the Burrow at Lumineer Academy. (Foundation/Year 1 children)

22.01.2022 As we count down to the GSB this weekend, it is important to remember that we should take care when observing and photographing in sensitive environments. Be careful not to trample on fragile ground, and stick to the paths whenever possible. #conservation #biodiversity #gsbioblitz2020

21.01.2022 A group of neighbours in the area surrounding the Quarry have created a Facebook page to discuss and share concerns about the two applications by the Chelvon quarry to lift the extraction limits. This would mean more noise, dust, trucks and environmental damage to the area. We need to voice our concerns to the Golden Plains Council before Wednesday in order to be heard. Please share evidence of damage/disruption to the page so that all may be aware. https://www.facebook.com/protectanakiemaude/?view_public_for=100249735239417

21.01.2022 Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) advise that the ANAKIE - BOX TK planned burn, located at 10 KM NW ANAKIE will be ignited at any time within the next 10 days if conditions are suitable. Road signs may be in place to slow traffic. Obey all traffic signs and instructions from fire agency crews and traffic management crews near planned burns. Weather conditions and fuel moisture levels at the burn site are being monitored and safety check...s carried out in preparation for the burn. If conditions are not suitable, the burn may be postponed. Note that some burns are carried out in stages, with part of the burn completed, and crews returning later to carry out further work within the burn area. If so, you will receive notifications when the burn is once again scheduled to be carried out. https://plannedburns.ffm.vic.gov.au/

19.01.2022 Friday's Biology Lesson. The Xanthorrhoea plant, aka Balga Grass Tree are very slow growing. A plant with a metre long trunk for example may already be 100 year...s old! You can find these unique trees in the South East region of Australia and Ballarat has fabulous strands of them in the Woowookarung Regional Park. The Balga is invaluable to the Aboriginal people. It is a source of: * food - succulent roots and fleshy white parts of the leaves are eaten and the seeds are ground into a powder for damper, * drink - the flower is socked in water to extract a thick sweet nectar, * building material - the leaves contain a resin that is used like a type of super glue. Each tree is totally unique and proudly displays its history in its shape. Image | Colleen Filippa Information | Florist With Flowers 'Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land'. Kyam Maher. 16.01.2022 ATTENTION LOCAL RESIDENTS, VISITORS AND FRIENDS OF STEIGLITZ AND BRISBANE RANGES NATIONAL PARK A gold exploration company called New Hanover Exploration Pty Ltd... currently holds an Exploration Licence (EL 6164) that entitles them to prospect for gold in the Steiglitz goldfields region. Another company called Kalamazoo Resources is interested in partnering with New Hanover and are currently undertaking targeted community consultation and preliminary exploration in the area. The target location for exploration is the Hanover Fault which crosses the southern section of the Brisbane Ranges National Park. This community group has formed to raise awareness about the proposed exploration and any future mining activity that may eventuate. We are deeply concerned about the potential for commercial mining in this unique area for a multitude of reasons, including impacts to the following: - General amenity of the area, particularly the peace and quiet that has attracted the residents and visitors. - Capacity and safety of local roads that are not designed to carry high volumes of heavy trucks - Wild fauna including endangered Phascogales, threatened Powerful Owls, and highly stressed koala populations - Rare and endangered orchids, wildflowers and indigenous plants - Tourism and visitation by special interest groups (including bushwalkers, bird watchers, artists, photographers, environmental groups, fossickers, etc) - Built heritage assets that are vulnerable to damage and destruction - Water table levels and potential flow-on effects to local waterways While the potential impacts are significant and far-reaching, the benefits for the local community are negligible. If you love this rare and beautiful place, please follow our page and share this post. Help us send a loud and clear message that gold exploration and mining is not wanted here. We will keep you posted with new developments as we become aware of them and we invite you to let us know of any useful information that may help our cause. #NoShaftingSteiglitz #TreesAndTranquility #NoTrucksAndTrauma #TruckOff #WorthMoreThanGold Image credit: Kaitlyn Church Photography

09.01.2022 Were taking our avian influenza response to the streets with help from the Golden Plains Shire Council. The council has kindly provided some of its roadside tr...affic signs to help us spread the word and eliminate the virus. Just a reminder that the housing order for the entire shire has been extended to 26 September. So if you live in the shire you must keep your poultry housed or enclosed and their food and water out of reach from wild birds. 06.01.2022 - The Striped Legless Lizard - Animal of the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands The Striped Legless Lizard is a thin snake-like lizard that surprisingly, is related t...o geckos. They are non-poisonous and can grow up to an impressive 30cm in length. This legless lizard can be differentiated from snakes by the stripes along the entire length of the body, distinct ear openings, small hind limb flaps, broad fleshy tongues and extremely long tails. Striped Legless Lizards (Delma Impar) are residents of native grasslands and grassy woodlands of the VVP. Still, they are rarely seen as they shelter in soil cracks, in crevices under rocks, in the base of grass tussocks, or under the artificial substrate. This lizard is mainly diurnal (active during the day) and can sometimes be seen sun-basking on tussocks, generally from late spring to early autumn, with peak activity in November and December. These long-lived lizards feed on invertebrates such as crickets, grasshoppers, spiders and centipedes. The females lay 2 elongated parchment-shelled eggs, that are deposited under rocks or in soil cavities in late spring or early summer; these hatch after 6-7 weeks. Habitat degradation and destruction, predation by native predators (snakes, other lizards and raptors) as well as introduced predators (foxes and cats) are the main threats to the survival of these lizards. We are excited to hear if you have seen Striped Legless Lizards in your patch of Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands! Our Victorian Volcanic Plain Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands Project will support private landholders to improve the condition, connectivity and extent of these critically endangered woodlands. The Geelong Field Naturalists Club is a valued partner for this project. This project is supported by Corangamite CMA, through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program. This project will run until 2023. Geelong Field Naturalists Club #VVP #GrassyEucalyptWoodlands #NLP #LandcareAus #GeelongFieldNaturalistsClub #leglesslizard

04.01.2022 THANK YOU to everyone who has followed, liked, and shared our page since it launched 5 days ago. There is clearly a lot of love for this very special area! Toda...y we want to share with you more information about the location that is the subject of Exploration Licence EL6164. The licence holder, New Hanover Exploration Pty Ltd, is particularly interested in two target areas: - One target area is the quartz reefs running up along the south eastern boundary of the Brisbane Ranges National Park and is referred to as their "High Grade Target" (see yellow overlay). - The other target area is along the Hanover Fault, over 5km in length and up to 500m either side and has been referred to as the "High Tonnage Target" (see red overlay). The Hanover Fault intersects the quartz reefs where it crosses under the southern section of the park and is the area in which they are particularly interested. To look at an interactive map of the area and find out more, visit our newly launched website at www.dontunderminesteiglitz.com. Once again, thanks for caring and please keep sharing our posts to send a clear message that commercial gold mining is not welcomed in #Steiglitz, She Oaks, Maude or the #BrisbaneRanges. #NoShaftingSteiglitz #TreesAndTranquility #NoTrucksAndTrauma #TruckOff #WorthMoreThanGold See more

03.01.2022 Hi everyone, it occurs to me that this might be of interest to many of you, particularly those living and working closely in the district around the You Yangs (or have an attachment to Serendip Sanctuary, like me). Feedback from the broader community is being taken until October 4th. There is an information session on September 16th. https://engage.vic.gov.au/future-investment-you-yangs-and-serendip-sanctuary * I know it feels a bit weird to be looking at something like this while we are in lockdown and under so much uncertainty for the future. But I think that also makes it a good time to think about how things can be made better. :-)
