24.01.2022 As part of Anti-Poverty Week, we’re unpacking the impact food insecurity has on people's mental health. Food insecurity has significant short and long-term imp...acts on physical and mental health. According to FoodBank’s 2020 Hunger Report, more than half of people experiencing food insecurity say it has caused a decline in their mental health over the past 9 months. Food insecurity often leads to mental ill-health due to increased stress, cycles of fasting, and the substitution of higher nutrition food with lower cost foods with lower nutritional value. Children in food insecure households in Australia are more likely to miss days of school, miss out on school activities, and more likely to experience mental ill-health. There are countless reports of parents regularly going without food to ensure their children are getting the nutrition they need. How in a country like Australia do we have people in our community regularly skipping meals because they can’t afford food? Research shows us that the rising cost of living is consistently the main reason Australians experience food insecurity. People are most likely to cite unexpected expenses, large bills, and rent and mortgage payments as the reasons they are unable to afford enough food. People has reported to us that the increased rate of JobSeeker with the introduction of the COVID Supplement has enabled people to eat 3 meals a day. A survey conducted by ACOSS showed that 80 percent of people said they were eating better and more regularly due to the increase in their payment. Foodbank has found that over a third of people don’t know how or if they will cope when the COVID Supplement ends on December 31. People looking for work will be forced back onto payments of $40 a day. We cannot allow that to happen again. The rate of JobSeeker must be increased above the poverty line for people’s mental and physical health.

23.01.2022 We’ve been in certain circumstances where we needed help, and by asking places if they could help us, they put us in the right direction." Foodbank's recent Hunger Report highlights that 61% of people experiencing food insecurity have accessed food relief since COVID-19 hit. However the other 39% have not reached out for the help they need. The most common barriers to accessing relief are embarrassment, shame, or thinking there might be others in greater need. Retiree David,... said he and his wife were lucky to be put in the right direction when they needed help. The very important thing is knowing where on earth to go. There are so many people, who do not know that there are people such as Foodbank who can help. They need to know help is out there. If you are in need of Emergency Food Relief free call 1800 979 777 for assistance. 16.01.2022 Meet Rex! Thanks to the valuable support from BHP Western Australia, Rex was able to participate in Foodbank WA’s Food Sensations for Schools Program in Port Hedland recently. The food bank program is an amazing inclusion in the school curriculum. It [has] really made my 8 year old son Rex consider the foods he consumes and now since doing the program plans 1 meal per week for us to enjoy. He has three of the cook books, chooses the recipe and then sorts what ingredients ...are not already in the kitchen. He teaches me knife safety from the book and then helps clean up. It is wonderful having him want to be involved in the kitchen and making good choices around food for his wellness. Thank you Foodbank WA for inspiring Rex and making it fun. Andy, Rex’s mum For more information about Foodbank WA’s Pilbara Programs, visit www.foodbank.org.au/WA/pilbara-strategy/

Among the new needy are international students who have lost their casual employment and do not qualify for Government assistance. Sarah is the coordinator of the student department at Organisation of African Communities in WA Inc who have been working to help provide Foodbank Hampers to over 150 African students and community members in r...esponse to COVID-19. A former student herself, she understands the pressures COVID-19 has placed on young people who already tend to struggle with the isolation and other challenges of studying in a foreign country. 03.01.2022 Our commitment to supporting remote communities in the East Pilbara was demonstrated recently when the team visited the western desert communities of Kunawarritji and Punmu. Joining forces with Pilbara Population Health, and thanks to the invaluabe support of BHP Western Australia, the partnership team delivered our Food Sensations for Schools nutrition and cooking program and facilitated a community-wide cook up. This annual collaboration enables us to reconnect and reinforce healthy cooking and eating messages, providing tailored support to communities in this unique environment.

03.01.2022 Arc Infrastructure have got us sorted! A huge shout out to the Arc Infrastructure team who rushed to our aid last week when we were short of volunteers, some even travelling from Narrogin to lend a helping hand! They absolutely smashed it in our warehouse - packing a massive 795 Emergency Hampers and 757 Deli Packs (they even ran out of boxes!)... With WA thrown into another lockdown over the weekend, this could not have come at a better time! #payitforward #payitforwardday

02.01.2022 Thank you to these incredible Bankwest vollies for helping cook up a storm in the kitchen last week for our #MegaMealChallenge! The team finished with 1649 meals - see how they did it

02.01.2022 For me Foodbank means that when I’m really struggling that week, I can still have one or two extra things for my daughter. I am more than happy to go without, but when she needs something, she is the first one that will get it. Our Hunger Report shows that in times of COVID, those who were already struggling are doing it even tougher and have been joined by people who’ve never experienced hunger before. Foodbank is always here to help. If you need emergency food relief free... call 1800 979 777. www.foodbank.org.au/foodinsecurity/

01.01.2022 A friendly reminder to our charity partners that our warehouses will be closed today, Monday 26th April, and we'll be back Tuesday 27th April. For emergency food relief, please free-call 1800 979 777.
