25.01.2022 Hi all, For those who are members of the Association and of course everyone who follows this page and have phoned, messaged or are confused by the individual emails which were sent out to members and the notices/posts on the Murray River Retriever Association Inc. page, rest assured, I WILL be still doing Murray River Retriever rescue/rehome. As everyone knows, Murrays are 150% my loves and my life and they always will be my priority, my second priority, as President, is an...Continue reading

24.01.2022 """""UPDATE.....UPDATE.....UPDATE""""" Princess Raiya met her potential Perfect New Forever Home Family (her new slaves ) today....The meet and greet went a...mazingly and Princess Raiya chose them to be able to take her home to their house within seconds. She had them sitting on the floor while she went from one to the other getting pats and scratches.. Needless to say, Raiya wanted to go with them immediately. Then, they took her for a short walk (because I didn't have everything ready) and she came back and was very happy. Raiya is now testing out if her slaves (Perfect New Forever Family) are living up to her expectations and will check in with me daily for 7 days before she makes her decision to stay..Stay tuned for more updates on Raiya ....... UPDATE:::::::::::: Princess Raiya is going to have a meet and greet this Sunday with her potential Perfect New Forever Home.. Thank you for all interest in Princess Raiya Please no more inquiries until I update everyone on Sunday night.. THANK YOU ALL The newest rehome "Raiya" back home from a huge day at the vet. Raiya had the works today, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, ears cleaned, then she had two massive teeth, one on the bottom right and one one the top left that had huge splits in them and ready to abscess , got them just in time. Raiya is taking a while to wake up as she was under the anesthesia for a long time. She is now next to the fire keeping warm and very sleepy. Raiya has decided that she now wants to start to find her New Perfect Forever Home (once she has recovered from todays operations). Please read carefully before contacting me regarding Raiya as I get a LOT of calls, which is fantastic, but her Perfect New Forever Home MUST tick all the boxes. Raiya has decided that she wants a house with no children. (visiting children will be ok but must be supervised) Raiya wants an older couple or older single person that she can call her own and they will pay attention to only her (yes, she is a bit of a princess but don't tell her I told you ) Raiya is not keen on a house with another dog just yet (because she wants to be the only dog and the princess ) Raiya is around 5ish years old. Raiya is now desexed, microchipped, up to date with vaccinations, flea and worming treatments. Raiya absolutely loves going for walks at least once a day and walks very well on the lead. Raiya has no idea what "recall" is yet so she needs to be on the lead at all times. Raiya is an inside dog. She sleeps inside (in my bedroom with my other 5), eats inside (on her "mat") and loves nothing more than sitting with you, cuddling up and be patted and scratched. (did I mention the Princess part?? ) Raiya was not house trained but doing extremely well learning toilet is outside (only one accident on the first day I had her home) but needs you to be on the ball as if you were toilet training a puppy (but much easier ) Raiya is not a "barker" but she will fear growl at other dogs and if they growl back, mighty little Princess Raiya turns into a fighting machine and won't back down. Raiya needs continued positive reinforcement training as does any Murray and she learns very fast as does any Murray. Princess Raiya does not want to be left home all day every day while you are at work. She is a Princess and wants you at home, at least for the majority of the time. Raiya is in Victoria and with the covid lockdown, please have a think about how you are going to meet Raiya before a decision is made. Raiya will not be going to her Perfect New Forever Home without meeting her Potential Perfect Forever Family. If you can positively tick all the requirements that Princess Raiya has stated above (I told you she was a Princess ), have a serious think about it, then give me a call on 0401050645. If I don't answer, please leave a message and I will get back to you ASAP.

15.01.2022 THE IMPORTANCE OF HIP AND ELBOW SCORES ON SIRES (DADS) AND DAMS(MUMS). Here is just one story as to the importance of EVERY Sire and Dam to be hip and elbow sco...red before breeding. As many have seen my pics in the past couple of weeks of my 7 year old girl Saede before and after her operation. Saede came to me as a "rehome". Saede was sold as a pup to a new Murray owner. She then was given back to the breeder it doesn't matter what the reason is/was) I was then asked if I wanted Saede. I agreed to do a meet and greet, fell in love, and became Saede's new Perfect New Forever Home. I noticed Saede had a few things which concerned me: 1. She had hair loss on her chest and backs of her legs 2. She was extremely stand offish (I have no better word..lol) towards men 3. She had a very slight limp on her left front leg. I have fixed concerns 1. and 2. and now I am dealing with number 3, hence her operation. Saede’s limp got worse over the years. The vet and I tried numerous things to fix Saede with everything from massage, heat packs, anti-inflammatory, pain killers, rest, confinement, injections, herbs etc etc etc but Saede continued to gradually get worse and I could see she was in pain. Next came xrays. The xrays had shown abnormalities in the elbow and I was told elbow dysplasia. I went and got another opinion which lead me to speaking with Dr Chris Preston of Pet and Emergency Specialist Centre in Malvern East (VIC) It turns out that Saede has Elbow and Shoulder Dysplasia which in turn now has arthritis. To put this in $$$$ perspective, it has cost me over $5,000 for vet, medication, xrays etc over the years and now over $5000 for xrays and operation. Yes, that is correct, over $10,000 to try to help the pain and problem, as there is no cure Saede will now have pain on and off for the rest of her life because of this. Saede is only 7 years old. Hip, Elbow and Shoulder Dysplasia is hereditary and genetic and can be prevented from not breeding from a Sire or Dam who have high Hip and Elbow scores. You may want to buy a cheaper puppy from a breeder who thinks it is unnecessary to pay for hip and elbow scores on the Sires and Dams but for the higher percentage of cheap puppy buyers they will be paying the costs for vets etc later in the cheap puppy’s life, or worse, won’t have the money to pay the vet, medication, xray and operation fees and will either give the dog in question up for rehoming, drop it at a rescue or worse, have it put down as the owners can’t afford it or, as I’ve been told previously, it’s cheaper to buy another dog rather than pay for their dogs’ medical expenses. My advice, NEVER, buy a puppy from any breeder (even if an Association or Organization recommend that breeder as a registered breeder) if the breeder does not do hip and elbow scores on both the Sire and the Dam (even if each are owned by separate people, each should be hip and elbow scored) and have the paperwork to prove it. In the Murray world, I know of only of 1 breeder who has all of his Sires and Dams hip and elbow scored, 1 who has the Dam scored and myself who have all my dogs/bitches scored. UPDATE I have just been advised there is another Sire who is also done :) There is a LOT of information regarding Hip and Elbow scores all over the internet, so I’ll let you do your own investigating.

12.01.2022 Alvin is still missing Night 18. Offering a substantial reward for his return. **Can everybody keep an eye and ear open for Alvin, your neighbour may have a new... dog or you may hear barking you don't usually hear** He has been missing since 7pm 2nd June 2020. My son and I are heartbroken. He went missing from Viewbank in Victoria when a pool maintenance contractor left our gate open. There hasn't been one sighting. Alvin is 14 and has arthritis and a very short coat having just been clipped. We do not know what has happened to Alvin. We pray he hasn't suffered. If somebody has Alvin, please call Banyule Council who will collect him (Jenny 9490 4222) or email Mel [email protected]) If you are not planning on returning him to us please be kind, it will be hard for him to spend his final years without the people he loves and who love and adore him. Schnauzers fret and he will deteriorate very quickly. Please get his coat trimmed to avoid fur ball knots which will pull at his skin, and painfully cripple his feet. He needs love and care, to be warm, please let him be an indoor dog, he is in his old age now. Please get him to a vet when he needs it, please don't let Alvin suffer. He deserves only the best of love. Thank-you. See more
11.01.2022 https://positively.com/dog-beh/nuisance-behaviors/nipping/ Nipping or mouthing is normal puppy behavior, but it can develop into a serious problem if allowed to continue into adulthood. An adult dog’s mouth can be very strong, so even when its nipping is just part of normal play, it can still cause significant damage to human skin. If a puppy is not taught from an early age that mouthing or nipping on skin or clothes is inappropriate, then she is likely to continue into adu...lthood. Some dogs are more orally fixated than others but every dog should be given boundaries, especially when it comes to using their mouths around humans. Most mouthing and nipping is playful in nature, but if a dog gets overly excited the nipping can become harder and more difficult to stop. If a dog becomes angry when told to stop, the nipping is more likely to be less play behavior and more behavior designed to control. Some herding breeds such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds and Shelties will sometimes nip at a person’s feet or heels, mimicking the livestock herding behavior they were originally bred for. Children are most likely to be on the receiving end of such nipping, especially when they are running around or playing vigorously. How Can I Teach My Dog To Stop Nipping? Teach your dog bite inhibition from an early age. If your dog nips or mouths you during play or at any other time, withdraw attention immediately and walk out of the room. Wait outside for a minute or two, come back in the room and resume play. If the nip happens again repeat the exercise until your dog realizes that nipping stops all interaction. If your dog plays without nipping, let play continue. Give your dog plenty of chew toys to redirect her nipping onto something more appropriate. Encourage non-contact games such a fetch or go find. You can play tug of war but make sure you do it with boundaries so that even when your dog is overly aroused, she listens and responds to you when you give her a cue or tell her to stop. Avoid wrestling or rough housing with your dog as this can exacerbate mouthing behavior. Teach your dog the Leave it cue, which is good for impulse control. If your dog is getting too excited give her a time out somewhere where there is no human interaction and she can settle before continuing interaction. If your dog is a relentless nipper try spraying some taste deterrent on you or your clothes. While this might not make you smell so nice for a while it will deter your dog’s desire to keep mouthing you. Do not smack your dog on the nose for nipping or mouthing as this could make the behavior If your dog is tense when she nips at you or bares her teeth, this might be a sign that the behavior is less than friendly. Enlist the help of a certified positive trainer to help you the behavior can easily get out of control.
10.01.2022 Central Coast Dog Trainer & Behaviorist - Zavannah Elliott 2n4s ootASulpogounstuousaas matcohsr 11:hf4edco7 "Don't worry, he's/she's friendly!" Don’t worry, he’s friendly! Perhaps you’ve heard that sentence before, or maybe you’ve even uttered those words yourself. They are usually called out by an owner whose dog is off-leash and approaching another dog or dog-person pair. You and your dog may not mind one bit when unfamiliar pooches come up to say hello, but other peo...ple and their pets may not appreciate this behavior. If you have ever said these words I will now let you in on a little secret: It does not matter if you think your dog is friendly. It doesn’t even matter if he actually is friendly. What matters is that, at best, it is poor doggie etiquette to fail to gain immediate control over your dog (i.e. have him at your side, leashed) as soon as others come into view. At worst, you are making life more difficult for the other person. When you call out, Don’t worry, he’s friendly, you may be trying to reassure the other person. Your intentions are good, but the effect is the opposite. Here are a few things you are letting the other person know: - don’t have control over your dog, which is usually a bit nerve-wracking for them; - you are putting your convenience above how they feel or how their dog feels, which is not a nice thing to do to your fellow human beings or their pooches; and - somewhat paradoxically, they may automatically find your dog annoying, which will earn him a bad reputation, despite your belief that he is friendly and a nice dog. What can we take away from this? Regardless of leash laws (dependent on where you live) it is poor manners to allow your dog to barge over to another dog, person or dog/person combo. So, lets keep all our dogs on the leash unless your furry friends have perfect recall. I will be posting about how to achieve this in the next few days! See more

05.01.2022 Hello to all my Forever Murray puppy owners. I'd like to know how many of you have not received an email from the Association with your membership number, your certificate of your puppy registration, a welcome letter or any other email from the Association since you took your Forever Murray puppy home please?
05.01.2022 There is always a lot of talk, phone calls, pm's, posts and replies to post on many Murray pages relating to "How much are Murray pups" So let me address this q...uestion. At the moment Murray puppies are being sold anywhere from around a $1000 up to around $5000. I know, it's a HUGE gap in prices. The following is what everyone needs to take into account when asking for prices on Murray pups and these are the questions everyone should be asking and getting the paperwork to prove it. 1. How old is the Sire and the bitch? (ideal for the bitch between 2 and 6 years the Sire between 1 and 8 years) 2. Do you have the lineage of both the sire and the bitch? 3. If you do have the lineage, how far back does the lineage go? 4. Have both the sire and the bitch been hip and elbow scored? If not, why not? There is no way I would be buying any pup if BOTH parents are not hip and elbow scored see other posts on hip and elbow scores on this page) Now, I don't mean has the sire and/or bitch ever been taken to the vet and the vet looks at the dog in questions and says there is no problem with the hips or elbows. Hip and elbow scores are done by having a vet (not all vets are qualified to do the xray part of hip and elbow scores) do specific xrays under a general anaesthetic (very few are qualified to do them under sedation and to have a dog in the specific positions and not move at all to get satisfactory still position xrays, so my opinion would be at this stage that the dog needs to be under general anaesthetic) and then they send a digital copy of the xrays to a qualified scorer. There are only 4 qualified scorers in Australia and in which the ANKC recognize. They are as follows: Dr Roger Lavelle 80 Ashworths Road Lancefield. VIC. 3435. Telephone: 03 5429 1682 Email: [email protected] Dr Mariano Makara PO Box 634 Lane Cove. NSW. 1595. Telephone: 0416 051 002 Email: [email protected] Dr Jenny Richardson PO Box 3477 Broadway Nedlands LPO WA 6009 Telephone: 0417 911 246 Email: [email protected] Dr Ana Hayes PO Box 36 Vermont. VIC 3133. Telephone: 0400 874 741 Email: [email protected] To get a dog/bitch Hip and Elbow scored the price is anywhere from about $500 to $800 depending on the cost of what each individual vet charges for xrays and general anaesthetic. Dr Roger Lavelle and Dr Anna Hayes charge $100 per dog to do the scoring. 5. Have both the sire and bitches’ lines been DNA tested for genetic health issues and to show the Murray is pure and not crossed with another breed? 6. Does the Breeder supply a Breeder Health Declaration in writing? If not, why not? 7. Does the breeder supply a Canine Sale Guarantee and Health Declaration in writing? If not, why not? 8. Have the puppies been wormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks? What has been used? Is there any proof that this has been done? 9. Are the pups microchipped? This is law and every puppy purchased has to be microchipped. 10. Has the puppy had it's first vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age? Is there a vet card with the stickers in it from the vaccination ampules given? 11. Has the puppy had a full health check and has the vet filled out the vet card as proof this has happened? 12. Is the breeder a registered breeder? Who is the breeder registered with? (Just because a breeder is registered with a certain Association or Organization, does NOT mean that the breeder it doing all the correct things re: breeding. There are still some Associations/organizations who will continue to support some breeders just because they pay their membership fee (or not) each year. It does not mean that a breeder is a responsible breeder and covers all other questions written here) 13. Does the breeder have a source number? Source numbers are in VIC. and the other states have breeder numbers through the government. (a breeder registration and a breeder and/or source number are two completely separate numbers). 14. Does the breeder supply in writing details of food and feeding? If not, why not? 15. How much other information is provided to you from the breeder? ie. code of practice for keeping a dog, training guides, desexing guides, feeding guides etc etc? 16. Does the breeder supply puppy packs and if so, what is included in the puppy pack? 17. Where have the puppies been living at the breeders home? Inside, outside? How much socialization and handling have the puppies had from birth to when you pick the puppy up? Have you seen the living conditions of the puppy? 18. What has the breeder been feeding the puppy? Including dry food, wet food and milk? Does the breeder supply some food for the puppy when you pick puppy up? 19. Does the breeder start any training with the puppy? If so, which training? 20. Has the bitch been bred back to back litters? (back to back litters means that the bitch has had a litter when last on heat and now how another litter on her next on heat) When was the date of the previous litter? 21. Does the breeder get very short and sharp when you are asking all the above questions and/or deflects the questions stating things like it’s just a puppy/dog , there is no need for all of that (rubbish), I’ve been breeding for years with no problems, if you don’t want to buy the puppy, there are plenty of others who will etc etc etc. So remember, I did not say all the above needs to be done by any breeder, I said to keep all the above into account when asking for prices on Murray pups. It's totally up to the buyer on what is expected from the pup and the breeder. If the breeder is/has doing/done all of the above, the pups are going to be in a higher price bracket than for a pup who's breeder only does the bare minimum needed or doesn't do any of the above. My opinion, for what it's worth, comes back to the old saying, you get what you pay for. Before paying for your puppy and taking puppy home, strongly request that you require everything in writing regarding all of the above questions. Good luck to all looking for a Murray Puppy. See more
