25.01.2022 Today kicks off National Volunteer Week, an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. We’d like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers past and present for your wonderful contribution to our group At this uncertain time we need volunteers more than ever, and the tasks required vary greatly. There are many ways you can help, and maybe you have a unique skill or talent you can utilise in the process! Tralisa from Townsville QLD loves baking cupcakes, so she regularly holds bake sales and donates the proceeds to help our frogs If you’d like to discuss the possibility of volunteering for us (either in person or remotely) please contact Deborah via email. More info here: http://www.frogsafe.org.au/help/help_other.shtml

19.01.2022 Can anyone help us bring this frog home to Mackay?

19.01.2022 BUILD YOUR OWN FROG HOTEL There are several 'frog hotel' styles being circulated on social media but they all have one major flaw: they are on the ground. Unfortunately this sets up frogs for attack by snakes, ants and birds, and also exposes them to disease once water accumulates in the bottom. The Frog Hospital (Frog Safe) recommends that the tubes be placed horizontally or vertically on a wall perpendicular to where the sun comes from (or you can block off one end whe...re the sun shines in). The allows tree frogs to get access, but not snakes and other predators. You can place a decorative container underneath so the frogs have ready access to water. Pictured is a small example we have on premises that our frogs love. You can use PVC pipes (scrubbed well first), other clean tubing with at least 4cm diameter, or bamboo from areas that are not near any chemical use. Decorate any way you like with non-toxic materials. Get creative! We’d love to see any photos of your creations

15.01.2022 Have you noticed any sick frogs around your home? Australia’s most widely used insecticide might be to blame... "(A frog’s) skin is porous. If they get in contact with chemicals, they end up in their bodies. - James Cook University Emeritus Professor of Tropical Ecology Ross Alfred. Thank you ABC Tropical North for helping us raise awareness of this important issue ... Article: https://www.abc.net.au//frog-carer-calls-for-res/100087304

12.01.2022 CAIRNS > CARMOO TRANSPORT REQUIRED There is a sick frog in White Rock, Cairns who requires transport to our Frog Hospital in Carmoo for treatment. If you are travelling that way tomorrow (Saturday) please email Deborah if you can assist.

12.01.2022 How good is this rain lately? The wet season is here, and with it our native frogs are out calling and breeding. Unfortunately this means Cane Toads are too, and we can all do our part to help protect our native frog species. Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the appearance of Cane Toad eggs. They are laid in long jelly strings as pictured, and are unlike any native frog eggs. If you see any Cane Toad eggs laid in water bodies please remove them imme...diately as the tadpoles can hatch in 24 hours. This is one of the easiest ways to help lower Cane Toad populations in your area! If you know of anyone traveling north tonight or tomorrow, please let me know asap. See more

11.01.2022 THE FROG HOSPITAL & COVID-19 The COVID-19 pandemic has sent a wrecking ball through the Australian not-for-profit sector. Organisations like us have either seen demand for services evaporate entirely, or are experiencing unprecedented demand to help more people out just when our own incomes have plummeted. We've taken a hit, too, but so far we’re holding up. If you're not yourself one of the people who needs help now, now is the time to help others. ... If you're able to lend a hand to people in trouble, and to the groups who are supporting them, we'd like to invite you to look at the COVID-19 Generosity Register , where you can see a list of organisations at the pointy end of this crisis and decide where your money, time or influence can be of most use. You'll find our listing on the Register here: https://www.givenow.com.au/giving-tuesday/frog-safe-inc We wish you health and thank you for your continued support. - The Frog Hospital (Frog Safe, Inc)

05.01.2022 WORKING BEE CALL OUT Can you travel to our Frog Hospital in Carmoo (Mission Beach, QLD) to help us restore our beautiful property? Please see more information below. Working-bee #1: C4 - Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation- Box 132 MissionBeach and Frog Safe (Frog Hospital) on Saturday 19th Sept 8.30-11.30am, followed by lunch.... Frog Safe (aka the frog hospital) operates from a World Heritage Neighbour property in Carmoo. We plan to restore this property to its former luxurious "bee friendly" gardens and turn it into a functional sanctuary for wildlife. We regularly see/hear cassas, striped possum, wallabies, lace monitors, sand goannas, long-nosed bandicoots, scrub fowl, microhylid frogs, and dozens of visiting bird species. We want to incorporate beehives and provide ample ponds for frogs to breed. Once the grounds have been cleaned up and all the new frog ponds installed, we will invite the public in for private guided walks and education. But first we need to clean it up and plant it up! Mini-workshop #1 will be held jointly with C4 on Saturday Sept 19th from 8:30am to 11:30am. Lunch (vego/vegan) will be provided. Our focus on the day is to prepare a new garden bed with an inset frog pond. We also need to erect edging for a perimeter garden on the same level, pull up some weeds, and fill it with mulch. Because of 'that virus thing', we need to know you're coming. Please flick us an email and we'll reply with the property address, where you can park and what bits you should bring. Our email is [email protected]. We have plenty of space for everybody to spread themselves out. If you need any advance information, please ring 4068-9402 between 9am and 7pm. Hope to see you on the day!

04.01.2022 Edit: Transport sorted, thanks everyone! FROG TRANSPORT NEEDED Is anyone heading south from Cairns today (Friday) or tomorrow? We have a sick frog at Trinity Beach which needs to come down to our Frog Hospital in Carmoo but they have missed today's shuttle. ... If you can assist please call Deb on (07) 4068 9402.

04.01.2022 OUR PHONE ON LOCKDOWN? Running an essential service with no volunteers during the lockdown has been a nightmare but it just keeps getting worse! Our phone has been locked down as well! On May 7th, our landline went dead along with our answering services. ADSL still works but, after two weeks now, the landline is still dead and callers receive a notice to say it is disconnected.... This is causing severe damage to our organisation. It is bad enough that callers are not getting through but they can't even leave us a message. People are panicking and think that we have shut down! That is certainly not the case. Our caseload increased during the restrictions with call volumes quite heavy on some days. Being able to spend 45 uninterrupted minutes on each long distance case is possible with our landline but it just not do-able with our mobile. At the moment, we can only receive calls for help via email and we have had to cancel essential errands just to stay close to the desktop. We have a notice about the phone in our website but not everybody checks that after they get a disconnected notice. Frog Safe founder Deborah Pergolotti says, "We're here! We're essential! And you can still reach us by email if you have a sick or injured frog!" She goes on to say that after Centrelink cancelled their volunteers, she has been forced to work without help. Volunteers are needed urgently and there are many tasks available ranging from the simplest to the technical." Until the phone is fixed, the group can be reached by email: [email protected]. We are also on Zoom so complicated calls can be handled that way.

04.01.2022 Edit: Help is on the way! Thank you to everyone who reached out CALL FOR HELP Will you or anyone you know be heading south from Cairns today or tomorrow? There is an injured frog in Gordonvale who requires transport to our hospital for treatment. ... If you’re able to transport it south to Babinda, Innisfail or thereabouts we can collect and take it to our hospital in South Mission Beach for treatment. Please call Deborah on (07) 4088 6572 if you can assist.
