09.01.2022 Yep, as the banner says "Bairnsdale Secondary College says NO TO VIOLENCE!" Unfortunately, due to the unpredictable restrictions of COVID-19, we were unable to deliver an actual Walk, as we’ve done in previous years. So instead, we focused on a strong visual awareness campaign. 23 schools from right across the region are involved from Bairnsdale to the border. We provided them with a hand stencil and invited their students to create a message or pattern that demonstrates for ...them the above message that ‘violence is not OK’. Some of these unique designs were then produced as banners and posters for the schools to keep and display, as a visual reminder that their community says no to violence! Students are the key to making a real difference. Because when today’s young people grow up with a solid understanding of the importance of respecting others, and with an intolerance for violence, then that’s how we can achieve real, lasting change for future generations. Pictured below are some of the students from Bairnsdale Secondary College wearing the Hands Up t-shirts. Thank you BSC for supporting our campaign and helping us raise awareness in the community. 07.01.2022 NAIDOC Week begins today! Across Australia we're celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years: Always Was, Always Will Be. ... The 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land (pictured) was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man. Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land.
