21.01.2022 This aid displays the correct postures for Taikyokyu Kata. Colored lines and circles highlight some of the key positions and angles. Learning these early in training will be the key to make learning and doing higher grade kata easier. Note: the backbone is kept vertical - one step in to get closer to the opponent, not "reaching in" by bending forward.

16.01.2022 Dear South Australian Students, After a brief closure, we’re excited to announce that. OUR CLASSES ARE RE-OPENING FROM TUESDAY 1ST DECEMBER IN SOUTH AUSTRAL...IA The majority of our venues have granted us immediate access to their halls and classes will commence straight away in these locations. A small number of schools have indicated a delay in re-opening their hall to community hirers, but we will continue corresponding with these venues and let you know as soon as those classes can open. An up-to-date class timetable for your region can be viewed by clicking the below button: https://gkrkarate.com/region-9-timetable/ For those students on a Direct Debit system, please note that your payments were suspended just after the lockdown was announced and their re-activation will be timed so that you will not be charged for any of the class-closure period. As such, your payments will not re-commence until your local/usual GKR Karate dojo has re-opened. If you’re happy to travel a little further to train until your local dojo re-opens, then please email us at the address below and we will arrange to re-activate your training pass. We look forward to seeing you back at class soon! Kind regards, Edde Nio Regional Manager - Senior Instructor P: 0403 507 049 E: [email protected] GKR KARATE

16.01.2022 Congratulations to those who graded since last week. 2 x red, 2 x green, and 2 x yellow. A glorious six pack to be proud of. Dev, you are simply awesome. Just... got your yellow belt and already self taught by studying the videos, the embusen of Saifa and the first few counts of Bassai Dai. The attached photo is a great example of shaping the foot for the front kick as you raise the knee. As reviewed Sunday, when performing a kick "all the way through" shaping the foot as shown eliminates the wrong shape of the foot at the point of contact. Yes I know we have the foot parallel to the floor at 4 stages, but this is bad form for a complete kick. +++ Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance +++ See more

16.01.2022 Great class today. The attached photos are a summary of the basic blocks and strikes used in GKR. For the new students over the last few weeks, this will be the first handout to you. I will get your email address next week and be able to send you other training aids for home study. GRADING is next Sunday. We have a few that are ready, but it will pay to practice your kata again, and again. I sent email to you (or parent) Thursday with links to videos of the kata which you can use.

15.01.2022 Great session tonight everyone, and good to see so many of you after your Easter long weekend. Everyone did very well with their bunkai application. Congratulations to Daniel on earning his yellow tip!

14.01.2022 Karate - Social Distancing? This photo is of a karate training session at the Shuri Castle in Okinawa in 1938. (the caste was destroyed in WW2 and has been rebuilt) Its a bit of a model of how we can keep apart while teraining. Note that the sensei is on a small platform so would be unable to perform full kata movement. Similarly in class ,we may have to adjust how we do the kata to keep with a small area. Bring your ideas to class, and/or comment here.

10.01.2022 On Sunday, students will know I stressed the need for the middle level cross body parry block (Chúdan soto ude-uke) and the lower level cross body sweeping bloc...k to extend PAST the body line on the opposite side of the body. This means the upper body must twist, or rotate with the blocking action. The attached training aid shows the various body positions during the block. And the text outlines the main aspects. In reality, these blocks are always best with a stepping away action. But there are times when the block may be done by reflex action - and the upper body rotation is critical for safe and effective action. See more

09.01.2022 Kata Saifa is different!, it seem more like a dance than a fight but its name gives it away Saifa means "Smash and Tear". Unfortunately, it is easy to get confused when learning especially when different instructors do not tell you the same thing, because they may not have learnt it properly, or have just gotten a bit sloppy. Its always best to go back to a formal source. Attached is a copy of part of the workshop part of Saifa for count 2. The sequence has a couple of moves. The first is a pull away of the forearm with a twist of the forearm, followed by a head level palm heel block (while stepping away) and then a back fist strike. These are evident in the video.

06.01.2022 Parents and Students. This is a cute training aid for our entry kata (Taikyoku Shodan - pronounced tie-kyoh-k' show-darn). Please take note of the floor plan (foot movements) showing how to move forward - and that in all turns, one pivots on the heel not the toes.

06.01.2022 Great turnout tonight after school holidays. We did some fun work on side movements for kumite, so make sure that you keep practising this at home. It was great to see your improvements on kata. It shows that you have been attending lots of classes and practising. Awesome effort everyone! Also a big thank you to Sunny and Tyler for your help with kata groups, and welcome to An who has joined his daughter in karate!

06.01.2022 Class is full for tomorrow Blair Athol 6.30-7.30 Keep up the good work and get in quick for next week

05.01.2022 URGENT ATTENTION! Due to the large number of students grading on this Sunday, 13th September 2020, we will have to split the grading into 2 sessions. The first ...session (check in at 10.30am) will be as usual from 11.00am - 12.30pm for White belts to Yellow belts only. Second session (check in at 12.30pm) will be from 1.00pm for Yellows belt and above. We will impose a "One parent allow in for each family rule" in order to comply with the current Covid-Safe Plan requirement on social distancing imposed by the State government. I do apologise for this last minute changes as the numbers attending was not expected to be this huge. Thank you for your understanding. See more

04.01.2022 Lots of push ups tonight and basics work. It was great to see so many people out training during the school holidays. See you next week for a session focused on kumite and kata, and remember to practice your sumo squats!
