20.01.2022 Are you planning to come to Talk Like a Pirate Day?

20.01.2022 We are looking forward to Christina Henri’s Festival of Bonnets at Glen Derwent on 7 and 8 August 2021

19.01.2022 We’re closed this weekend for a wedding on Saturday and a private function on Sunday. Back to normal the following weekend.

18.01.2022 We’re working on this event with Dr Christina Henri, curator of Roses from the Heart to be held at Glen Derwent on 7 August 2021 (possibly all that weekend). Christina Henri - Roses from the Heart’s project celebrates convict women through the symbolism of an 1860s assigned servants cloth bonnet. This festival will celebrate the lives of Australia’s female convicts, incorporating performance art, textile art, theatre, music, cookery and social history. ... We would welcome involvement from anyone with an interest in these areas including those with female convict ancestors and/or a convict link to their historic property. For our friends in mainland Australia, this will be a great time to visit Tasmania. #derwentvalleytasmania #hobartandbeyond #tassiestyle #eventstasmania

18.01.2022 Next Saturday at Glen Derwent, it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day. Tickets available online.

15.01.2022 Unfortunately, the three macrocarpa trees at the top of the ha-ha wall, immediately south of the oast house, have started dropping big limbs and apart from the risk to occupants and visitors, present a risk of significant damage to the oast house. This is an unwelcome development, for heritage, aesthetic and financial reasons but not unexpected. The trees will be removed tomorrow as summer arrives, to maximise the potential for rapid rehabilitation of the lawn areas and establishment of replacement vegetation. We plan to use the salvaged timber (or swapped for milled timber from other salvaged macrocarpas) to build new doors for the barn and repair coach house doors. Our application to remove them has been approved by the Heritage Council under section 42(3)(a) of the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995.

07.01.2022 We were a little sad with how quickly the Tasmanian travel vouchers ran out this morning. I guess we should have known that while $7.5 million sounds like a lot of money, if you divide it by $150 per person, fewer than 10% of Tasmanians would succeed in registering and at least 90% of Tasmanians, like us, would be left out. To cheer us and everyone else up, we're taking $100 (and breakfast) off our nightly rates for stays of 3 or more nights from now until the end of Novemb...er. For breakfast you can either BYO & DIY or find some breakfast, brunch or lunch locally in the beautiful Derwent Valley. 07.01.2022 What a delightful time we had today at Glen Derwent Tea Rooms, New Norfolk. On a 36+ degree day we remained cool inside the colonial home built for First Settle...r James Bryan Cullen and his wife Elizabeth Bartlett. Thanks to Liz Virtue for providing this special venue and for the endless supply of iced lemon water and treats from the kitchen. Thanks to all who came along today with wonderful fabric contributions, completed or in-progress bonnet tributes and with heart-felt empathy for the Lasses being remembered through the symbolism of a bonnet. The lovely bonnet featured here remembering Agnes Chambers transported to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the ‘Emma Eugenia’ in 1851 is a testament to Laura Mulheran’s sewing skills. Laura began stitching this, her second ‘Roses from the Heart’ bonnet tribute last year. Prior to attending the bonnet making sessions at Glen Derwent Laura had never sewn before. Her stitching is beautiful and she is already planning her third bonnet..... See more

04.01.2022 The Tank Cottage was built in the mid to late 1800s. The eastern half of the cottage was, as the name suggests, a water tank. It stored water for domestic use, pumped up from the river with a steam-driven pump. Evidence of this use remains in the very thick walls, forged iron bracing straps and buttresses to hold in the walls against the water pressure, and a large bronze tap at the bottom of the wall facing the house. The northwestern corner contained the laundry and the southwestern quarter was the ostler’s quarters. Some time after the arrival of town water, the thick internal walls were cut through, along with a couple of windows, and the tank became the Tank Cottage. #stayatglenderwent #tankcottage #tinyhouse #derwentvalleytasmania #hobartandbeyond

02.01.2022 UPDATE I just attended the magistrates court again today. The defendant opposed the restraint order so the interim order will continue to apply until we attend court ordered mediation on 12 May. In addition to unwanted contact directly to me, she has over the last 18+ months been sending emails to businesses we collaborate with making untrue claims about our business. Pictured in comments are examples. ... If you’ve had any similar contact with claims about Glen Derwent and are willing to share it, please contact me privately as it would assist me with dealing with this problem. Please email [email protected]. Please don’t comment with details.
