23.01.2022 Highlights of the 2020 Congress are now available, view here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJ6Ope_m-U&feature=youtu.be

21.01.2022 After one of the wildest finals in recent memory, the 2020 Gold Coast Open Teams has been decided. Trailing by 30 imps with three boards to play, the CORNELL t...eam (Ashley Bach, Nabil Edgtton, Alex Antonios, Michael Whibley-Matt Brown) picked up 42 (!!!) imps to win the match by 12, 162.1-150. The unlucky runners-up were WARE (Michael Ware-Nick Jacob, Max Henbest-Dave Wiltshire, GeO Tislevoll-Terje Lie). Anyone who was watching will agree it was one of the most entertaining matches they've ever watched.

16.01.2022 Bill Hirst Obituary It is with great sadness we have learnt of the recent passing of Bill Hirst, who was a regular visitor to the Gold Coast Congress. Bill was born in Yorkshire and later retired to Kent. He started his card journey by playing Solo and Whist at the golf club and graduated to the grandfather of whist games Bridge not long after. He played continuously for more than 55 years. When asked why he played the game, he responded, Easy Because I love the game.... In 1989 he formed a partnership with John Hassett; they had many successes, including playing for Great Britain in the Senior's World Olympiad and winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In 1998/1999, Bill recruited leading English professional Paul Hackett including his twin sons Jason and Justin (world junior champions at the time) to the Gold Coast Congress. Later in 2007, Bill, Paul Hackett, Jason Hackett, and Tom Hanlon (Ireland), won the Gold Coast Open Teams. Bill also played in two European Championships and was non-playing captain for the English Open Team in Pau (2008). In February 2018 prior to the GCC, Bill represented England A in the 5th Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship, held on the Gold Coast. Over the years Bill acted as unofficial recruiter for the GCC in England and brought out quality teams for many years. Our sincere condolences to Sheila and family, he will be missed! See more

13.01.2022 The cutest bridge player and super hero

07.01.2022 Dear Gold Coast Participant Thank goodness we were able to get the 2020 Gold Coast Congress over - I think I would still be refunding entries - the thought of the administrative work with this gives me a migraine. Tim and Sue, Ray and I have had our Wrap Up Meeting and in the next couple of weeks will be meeting with the Chief Director (Laurie), Chief Scorer (Matthew), Entries Co-ordinator (Pele) to discuss the 2020 event and then what we could do better to make our 60th 2021... event even better. Of course this meeting will now be undertaken by zoom or something similar. Two things that we need your opinion on 1. Would you prefer the Matchpoint Weekend Swiss to be an Imp event. It would be the same timing which is Saturday Afternoon, Sunday Morning and Sunday Evening but imp not matchpoints. 2. Would you prefer the starting time to be 10.00 am for Saturday Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This would mean lunch would be at 1.30 pm and we would be finished at 6.00 pm or do you prefer the later starting time of 10.30 am. Monday and the final Saturday will see no change to starting times. Things you may find of interest 1. If the 2021 event is held in 2021, entry fees will remain the same. 2021 would be the three year cycle where entry fees were increased HOWEVER due to what is going on in the world right now it was felt another year at the same fees would be of benefit to us and you the bridge player. 2. For those of you who were worried, there was no reported incidents of Corona Virus at this years congress. 3. For those ladies who think we have additional toilets on the western side of the building, we do not. When we use the other end of the building there are toilets from the Central Rooms but from Halls 1, 2 3 and 4 there are no toilets on the western wall. Please be safe and please respond with your opinion if you have one on the two matters above to [email protected] Kim Ellaway Manager - Gold Coast Congress

03.01.2022 Dear Gold Coast Bridge Player Future Gold Coast Congress events are always on our minds particularly the 2021 event and I need some feedback from you. My question is "Are you still planning to come to the 2021 Gold Coast Congress if Social Distancing Rules are lifted by then?" Just a yes or no is required and if you are speaking for two people please put yes x 2 or no x 2 etc.... Some Background We may not be allowed to invite international visitors except perhaps New Zealand. You may have to bring your own writing implements. We or the Convention Centre would of course supply hand sanitisers and locate them at Water stations and Coffee stations. There would be no change to the spacing of the tables. Changes that will be implemented in 2021 if held and if not 2022 are below and we thank you for your feedback. - The third session of the Bobby Richman Pairs Finals will be held Monday Morning giving all players in this field the afternoon off. This will give those players who only play in this event the opportunity to drive home in daylight and give Bobby Richman players the session off before the Teams. For those who still wish to play a session of bridge - we will have a walk in. - Starting Times will be 10.00 am and 2.30 pm for all days except Monday and Friday where the second session will start at 2.00 pm. - A new section will be added to the teams and that is under 1500 masterpoints - Reducing our Buses to one only and priority given to those who really need it. Bookings will be taken - our Buses ran empty for a lot of the circuits this year and this seems sensible. Some Comments - Weekend Swiss will remain as matchpoints - NO CHANGE - We will not be increasing the entry fees even though it is due. - The No Frills event may not happen due to venue availability.
