25.01.2022 Mmmm, iso food. I don’t know about you, but with the kids doing online schooling from home, and a drastically changed work-home balance, I’m baking more. And I ...can justify it the kids are home, I want them to have healthy snacks. But I could become quite the tubby little hobbit having secondsies with the kids, or a rolly polly Pooh-bear searching for a wee little smackerel of something sweet to go with my cup of tea For those of you in the same boat, here are a couple of my favourite home isolation recipes. They’re both high in fiber, polyphenols which feed your beneficial gut bacteria, beneficial fats, and trace nutrients. The cookies from salted plains can be varied however you like. I tend to leave out the choc chips, and add a nice plump duck egg from our free range ducks, which adds a little more protein and helps hold them together. I also like to add a generous amount of ginger, because I love ginger and chocolate together, and it satisfies that part of me that otherwise wants to be baking buttery sweet gingerbread. The crackers I tend to bake I when start reaching for the corn chips. Again vary them however you like I add the okara (soy pulp/fibre) from my home made soy milk, and whatever combination of fresh herbs from the garden or dried spices suits my current craving. Use any combination of seeds you have, the critical parts are the flaxseed (preferably ground) and chia, which contain the mucilage (goop) that holds them together. They are great with a homemade hummus, pesto, or any other healthy dip. Enjoy! And please feel free to comment with any recipes or gems you feel like sharing with others https://saltedplains.com/chocolate-tahini-cookies-gluten-f/ https://quitegoodfood.co.nz/easy-home-made-five-seed-crack/

22.01.2022 Just before the summer holiday period, Dr Jason Hawrelak (one of our Goulds naturopaths) was interviewed on the Health, Happiness & Human Kind podcast. His interview was on the role of the gut microbiota and poor gut health in anxiety in depression. If you think depression is all in your mind think again! 21.01.2022 Autumn abundance. Behind the scenes I am a bit of an urban homesteader, not just in a pandemic preparation kind of way, this is the way I roll. I love looking u...p old crafts that have largely been forgotten, and creating ways to weave them into a more sustainable existence. And on the last day of autumn, I really like taking stock, winter is coming, are we ready? Our pantry shelves are heavy with stewed fruits, chutney, relish, dried apples, apricots and sultanas, and good selection of dried herbs peppermint, sage, lemon balm, chamomile, agrimony, yarrow, chilli, and wee precious bit of saffron. This year we’ve harvested dandelion roots for the first time, which is a lovely addition. While some gardeners are busy trying to eradicate them from their lawns, we’ve been enjoying a Dandelion coffee in the afternoons. Our tomatoes were a bit marginal this year, so there is no passata. And our bees barely survived last winter, so there is no honey or herbal meads this year, but all up I’m pretty happy with what we’ve tucked away, and there is always next season. There are still a few things to add the lemon verbena harvested today, and a batch of cider just started today from some apples that weren’t keeping so well. If you want to make use of your own dandelions, I’ve attached the process below, just be sure you know how to correctly identify them. Happy harvesting. See more

16.01.2022 Our hearts are with the US people and we stand by them as they seek justice and action to end systematic racism within their country. We care for your safety. We also reflect on the parallel issues of systemic racism in our own country and we hope that we can also shine a light on this issue within our country and bring about positive change. We acknowledge that support in words is not enough and that we do come from a place of privilege. The Goulds Clinic Practitioners will ...be donating a portion of their income to support some Australian Indigenous-led and Black American-led organisations that are doing work to bring us to a more just present and future. If you are also able and wanting to contribute there are a lot of amazing organisations out there. We certainly found it hard to choose and we are starting with the four organisations below. We also found this resource helpful: https://www.vwt.org.au/anti-racism-resources-from-australi/. We would love to hear of other suggestions too. 13.01.2022 Thank you to all of our customers and patients for your ongoing support. We would like to put out a message to remind people to not come into the store or clinic if they have respiratory symptoms. If you have respiratory symptoms, please phone us instead of coming in as we are still able to help you. This includes cold and flu symptoms, sore throats, runny nose, sneezing, any cough (including from asthma). If your child has any of these symptoms please do not bring them in...to the store either (sorry, we understand that this is inconvenient). Even if you have had a negative Covid 19 test we still need you to not to come into the store if you have these symptoms. We are pleased to reassure you that none of our staff will be working in store if they are experiencing any of these symptoms themselves. Thank you for your understanding and cooperating. We do really value providing you and your family with natural medicine support for respiratory symptoms, but we need to do this over the phone. We can organise safe pickup options or delivery if you phone us. Photo by Cerys Lowe on Unsplash

Shifter Cargo, who will deliver your order by bicycle from the inner suburbs of Hobart, all the way to Glenorchy, across the bridge to Bellerive, up to Mount Nelson or as far south as Taroona. For customers needing a delivery to areas further out from the CBD, Jet Couriers will be an ideal choice. Of course, if you are further afield wi...thin Tasmania (or elsewhere in the country and beyond), we can still ship your order with Australia post. Just give us a call (62344223) and we can discuss rates of the different delivery options with you. Yours in health!

12.01.2022 It seems kind of special that the four naturopaths that became part of Goulds almost 15 years ago, Belinda Robson, Dawn Whitten, Daniel Robson and Jason Hawrelak, have all contributed to these recently published textbooks along with many other fabulous contributors. We like to think that we may have brought a touch of Goulds flavour, drawing on our wonderful years immersed in natural medicine at Goulds. We have all been so busy that we almost forgot to stop and celebrate this... achievement. Excuse our physical distancing photos! Within the Advanced Clinical Naturopathic Medicine textbook, Belinda Robson wrote the chapter on Down’s syndrome (the first chapter on this topic within a natural medicine textbook that we know about), Dawn Whitten wrote the Breastfeeding chapter and co-wrote the Infancy chapter with the wonderful Tabitha McIntosh, and Jason Hawrelak was the lead author on the Microbiome chapter with esteemed colleague Joana Harnett. Within the 2nd Edition of Clinical Naturopathic Medicine, Daniel Robson co-authored the Men’s Health chapter with the fabulous textbook editor Leah Hechtman.

11.01.2022 Women's Health Tasmania have a new podcast called 'She's Out There' and I had the honour of discussing sustainable periods with CEO Jo Flanagan for Episode 1. Have a listen and let us know what you think! We'll sure be subscribing and are looking forward to more great content to come <3 "Having periods is expensive. It has been estimated that you will probably spend several thousand dollars on menstrual products over the years you need to use them. When you start calculating in the costs to the environment from disposable products, it really adds up. Women’s Health Tasmania CEO Jo Flanagan talks with Naturopath Monica Francia about some more environmentally friendly options. Most of them should also save you quite a few dollars after several months of use." https://www.womenshealthtas.org.au/node/88

If you are wanting to help in any way you can, here is a list of groups that would love the support. ... Stay safe everyone.

11.01.2022 THE TIME TO PROTECT OUR ELDERS IS NOW In the last 24 hours, the Australian and Tasmanian governments have mandated further measures to attempt to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These measures include stricter rules around gatherings and stronger lockdown regulations. The Australian government has specifically urged those at greater risk to serious manifestations of COVID-19 to stay at home and self isolate and limit contact with others as much as possible. We are pleased ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Here in Australia we’re doing the social isolation strategy really well. We’ve got this, we’re past the toilet paper shenanigans, the curve is curving downwards..., and we totally get that now is not yet the right time to take the parachute off. Go team, we rock. But the loneliness, the anxiety, the deep set sadness, the homesickness for family members and friends far away, the 4am insomnia and the beyond weird dreams Oh that’s hard. Especially for those of us that have been avoiding the pull of social media and online interaction for years Yep, that’s us. My garden has never looked so good as it does now, my kitchen has the gorgeous aroma of baked wholesome goodness, and my pantry is full of home grown preserves. All of this is therapeutic, but we are social creatures, even the most introverted of us need to feel the connections with others. So we’re going to have to shuffle a little out of our comfort zone whether its finding an online community of people who share your passion and can’t wait to nerd out with you about it, or zoom/facetime/skype chats, card games on Trickster, Settlers of Catan (Catan Universe Steam) or other online board games, or dare I say host a HouseParty ?!? Here is a nice little article from Scientific American about combating loneliness during social isolation. It has some great ideas about the little acts of online kindness that will get us through this. Share the love, stay in touch (virtually), deepen your connections, check in on each other, be there for each other, and if you’re struggling please reach out the love and care people feel for you isn’t any less real for all the closed doors and physical distance. xox https://www.scientificamerican.com//how-to-prevent-loneli/

10.01.2022 Dear Goulds Patrons - Bioceuticals is recalling a batch of Vitamin D drops. If you have purchased from us Bioceuticals Vitamin D drops with the batch number 002918 please bring it in to Goulds for a full refund or exchange. There is a concern that there is a possible uneven distribution of vitamin D in the liquid, so it is prudent to discontinue taking the supplement. Please phone us or come in and we can further explain and organise a refund for you or exchange for a different brand.

10.01.2022 Goulds Natural Medicine clinic and apothecary will be closed for the Public holiday on Tuesday January 26th. We are open on Monday and resume regular hours on Wednesday the 27th.

08.01.2022 Greetings, to our community both near and far. Thank-you for your ongoing support of Goulds during this time. We continue to keep our doors open and welcome you to keep shopping with us in person. Remember, we are also happy to arrange delivery of your items if you ring or email us (we do recommend those more vulnerable members of the community do this where possible), and we are also happy to make up orders ahead of time if you want to simply wish to come in and pick it up f...rom the shop. While for the most part spatial distancing has been beautifully adhered to by our customers, there have been moments where the volume of people in the store has been greater than we are comfortable with. To help us continue to follow government guidelines around spatial distancing, and keep you, our staff and community safe, we ask you to observe the following safe distancing guidelines when you visit our store: Please keep 1.5m away from staff and other customers. We have marked the floor with tape through the store and in front of the counter to make this easier to adhere to. If you require help from our staff, please wait at one of the marked positions in the centre aisle, keeping 1.5m between yourself and other customers. When a staff member is available, please follow their direction to an available position at the front counter. We are limiting the number of customers in the store at any one time to 5. Before entering, please check to see how many people are already inside. If all marked positions in front of the counter, and in the centre aisle are occupied: Please wait outside to the right side of the front entrance, next to the sandwich board, keeping 1.5m from other people who may also be waiting outside. When someone exits the store, please come in and take the next available position in the centre aisle (while still keeping a clearway near the entry). When leaving the store, please leave in a way that best maintains your distance from other people. This will most likely to be via the side aisles, however sometimes the centre aisle will be best. Our staff will help you to identify the best way out of the store if needed. If there are 4 or less people in the store, we welcome you to browse, as long as you are able to keep the recommended distance of 1.5m between other customers and staff. If the store has reached a capacity of 5 customers, please minimise browsing and return to the queuing area. Throughout this process, you will very likely receive guidance and instruction from us. Please be patient and responsive, and know that we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy, and to continue to be able to serve you. With much thanks and gratitude, and love to you all.

07.01.2022 Yes, we are still open. We are making changes in our Apothecary and our Clinic, including increased hygiene, spacing our seating, asking customers and patients to wash or sanitise their hands when they enter, and asking those who've recently travelled overseas or who have colds or flus not to attend either the shop or the clinic, but to call us instead. Our osteopathy and acupuncture appointments are continuing as normal, although with extra hygiene precautions taken by our ...practitioners Estelle and Jackie, as well as our reception team. Naturopathy appointments are also continuing, although we are slowly transitioning to phone and skype appointments where possible, and otherwise patients are still welcome to attend in person. Many of you may be thinking about what you can do right now to optimise your health. Perhaps you are experiencing stress, insomnia, anxiety, or a return of an existing health issue. You may simply want to stay well as you face the challenges ahead. We understand that right now your priorities might have changed, or you may suddenly be facing financial uncertainty, meaning you don't want to commit to a full comprehensive naturopathic care approach. For this reason, our clinic is now offering one-off phone or skype 30 minute paid appointments with our fully trained and highly skilled naturopaths. This is available to anyone, anywhere - in Tasmania, Australia or the rest of the world. These consultations will be booked at a time that suits you, and will be an opportunity for you to discuss what is going on for you right now. Your naturopath may recommend simple dietary or lifestyle advice; herbal or nutritional medicines, or help you identify items you may have at home or can easily access, that you can use to continue to support your health. Discounted rates are available for those with government issued low income health care cards. We are extending this offer to people who are facing financial hardship due to the current situation. Please talk to us about your situation as we care deeply about our community, both near and far, and we are trying to find ways to support those most affected. For those who can pay the full fee, please do, as this supports our naturopaths to continue offering this service. Further to this, those who are in a more secure financial position are welcome to contribute any amount towards an appointment for someone else, so that we can offer this to someone who can't afford an appointment at all. If you would like to book one of these appointments, or any other naturopathy, acupuncture or osteopathy appointment, visit our online booking page here: https://www.gouldsnaturalmedicine.com.au/book-online (for a short one-off naturopathy appointment, choose "Naturopathic Acute Care Appointment 30 mins" in the "Naturopathy" drop down menu) or call or email our reception team on +61 3 6234 4223 or [email protected]

05.01.2022 With the current global and local concerns around the Coronavirus we want to provide you with some practical and reassuring advice around how to take care of yo...urselves and each other. We understand that the current situation is confusing, and the uncertainty can be frightening for some. We believe that first and foremost, we need to look after each other. We’ve therefore put together a list of simple steps you can take at this time to take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We have also listed ways in which you can access our care in the event that you have reason to avoid coming in in person (see further below) we have several options for phone and skype consultations as well as having items posted to you, and we can make this very easy for you! Our list of suggestions below has been compiled with the intention of providing you with simple steps for actions you can take at home, or recommendations for things that you can access fairly easily. These treatments have the potential to support your general health and immune resilience, but to be clear, none of them have any proven action in preventing or treating coronavirus infection. Gargle and drink GREEN TEA. Consuming green tea, in particular gargling it, has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting influenza and the common cold. The tannins in green tea have been shown to have broad antiviral effects topically. In one study, residents in an aged care facility gargling the equivalent of cup of green tea three times daily were more than 15 times less likely (OR 15.7) to catch the flu https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=16970537 Take a Vitamin D supplement. Living in Tasmania is known to increase our risk of having low vitamin D. A number of studies have shown that taking vitamin D, particularly in people who are vitamin D deficient, reduces the chances of developing acute respiratory infections including influenza. Most studies reviewed used adult doses ranging from 2000IU to 4000IU a day, which is known to be safe to take long term even in the absence of deficiency https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=30675873 Eat probiotic foods daily. Consuming probiotic foods regularly or taking a probiotic supplement has been shown to reduce the risk of developing an upper respiratory tract infection https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=25927096 You can consume probiotics through foods such as probiotic yogurt (Vaalia has 3 well researched viable strains in therapeutic amounts), sauerkraut or kimchi, in addition to many others. All of these can be consumed on a daily basis. If you would prefer to take a supplement, talk to us at Goulds about the most ideal one for your situation. Eat plenty of raw crushed GARLIC. We don’t care if you stink, we can all stink together! Garlic is one of nature’s best antimicrobials, and it is quite amazing in that it appears to be selective in its action - it doesn’t wipe out your good bacteria. Local organic garlic is best if you can access it, but don’t worry if you can’t eat what you can find. Ensure you are eating raw garlic according to your own tolerance as not everyone can stomach it. We find that adding crushed garlic to a meal just before consuming it, or having it with avocado on wholesome bread, improves tolerability. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=PMC4103721 Keep any medicines you regularly use in stock and within date. This includes pharmaceuticals (check your scripts are also in date), herbal remedies and nutritional supplements. At Goulds we have taken measures to ensure we have enough immune and respiratory herbs in stock to get through the winter season, and while we encourage you to be prepared, we emphatically ask that you don’t stock pile herbs, so that we can continue to serve the community through the winter period. Tinctures are also not something we can accept returns for, so please think about how much you realistically need. We are setting a limit of 500ml per person for respiratory and immune mixes, and while we won’t be policing repeat visits, we ask that everyone be mindful of others within the community also having access to herbal medicines. Keep your home above 16C. Having a cold home reduces respiratory resilience and increases susceptibility to and mortality from respiratory tract infections. This is especially important for people who are elderly, asthmatic, or have other chronic/recurrent respiratory conditions. http://www.instituteofhealthequity.org//the-health-impacts Eat a healthy well balanced diet. Eat an abundance of plant foods, high antioxidant foods (especially berries, kiwifruit and purple grapes), fresh local fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and plenty of legumes. These help to feed your beneficial gut bacteria, which will assist you with immune resilience. They also ensure you have a healthy intake of vitamin C along with other nutrients important for immune health. Don’t overindulge with alcohol. Binge drinking is bad for your gut flora, and also impairs immune function and increases the severity of respiratory tract infections https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4590612/ If you smoke, action a quit plan. Contact QuitTas for support https://www.quittas.org.au/ Get enough sleep, maintain a healthy exercise regime, and try to keep stress levels in check. We understand that these things can be easier said than done, but all three of these are integral to your immune system working well. So take the opportunities that present to take care of yourself. If you do get sick, don’t panic, but please minimise your contact with other people, and follow the guidelines about self-isolation. SELF ISOLATION IS RECOMMENDED IF: You have returned from or transited through any high-risk countries within the last 14 days. (It appears prudent to extend this to moderate risk countries also.) At the time of writing this post (12th March 2020) the following countries are considered high and moderate risk: Mainland China; Iran; Italy; South Korea; Cambodia; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Singapore and Thailand. It appears that USA may soon be classed as moderate risk also. You have been in close contact with anyone who has recently transited through these countries. You have been in contact with anyone who has confirmed coronavirus or is suspected to be at risk of being exposed to the virus. You have recently returned from anywhere overseas and have even mild cold or flu symptoms. ***In all of these cases you should call the Coronavirus hotline on 1800 671 738 in Hobart or 1800 020 080 nationally (in Australia) to clarify your next step. https://www.health.gov.au//coronavirus-covid-19-informatio We can offer you support remotely over the phone or skype, rather than in person. How can we help you if you have symptoms or are at risk of carrying the virus, and need our support? We can offer you naturopathic advice over the phone just as you would receive if you visited our Apothecary We offer phone and skype consultations in our clinic We do postal orders and can send any products out to you or if you are local, you could arrange for a friend or family member to collect medicines for you. If you are uncertain or want to avoid exposing others, please give us a call as we can still help you. Our phones are very busy at the moment, so if you can’t get through to us immediately, wait a little while and try us again. Our reception team will also endeavour to return any missed calls. Rest assured that we are here for you, and will help you as quickly as we can. We are taking steps to minimise the spread of infections in our clinic and apothecary, and our staff are also taking many measures to support their immune systems, in order to approach this season in a proactive way. Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate this together.
