25.01.2022 Fury | Why We Play series | The fabulous Monica Litisoni shares her journey from Griffith Netball Association to Baulkham Hills Netball and now into our GWS Fury Pathways Team playing in Division 1 Metro as BHSNA. Thanks Mon. Why did you start playing? Monica: I started playing netball because my cousin Noa asked me to play on her team. So I thought why not give it a shot!! Coming from a small town called Griffith, there wasn’t that many sporting opportunities out in the coun...try. So playing netball was a great deal to me because it kept me motivated and fit. One thing I always looked forward to was waking up for the early Saturday comps. Why do you love playing now? Monica: Honestly I love playing now because of the opportunities I’m given. Netball has made a huge turn in my life becoming an everyday routine. Train, eat, sleep & repeat. My parents sacrificed everything for me moving to Sydney, so that I can achieve my goals. I am truly blessed on how far I have come and can’t wait to see what the future holds down. I’m also bit of a chatterbox so meeting new girls along the way has formed new bonds with teams I’ll forever cherish. 23.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | The determined Jessica Laga'aia shares her why story with us. Thanks Jess. Why did you start playing? Jessie: I started playing when I was 9. Mum and Dad used to play on a mixed team together and really wanted me to give it a go. I whinged in the car all the way to my first training but I’ve loved it ever since. ... Why do you love playing now? Jessie: I love the game now because of the people I’ve met. Being apart of the fury family I’m constantly surrounded by strong and empowering people who push me to want to be better. I also love that netball is a game that inspires young girls to their pursue sporting dreams! 23.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | We welcome Kyla Thompson to the U23s team this season and she shares with us her 'why story'. Why did I start playing? Kyla: It is not a very exciting story - but I was always very active and full of energy as a kid. Mum had played netball for many years when she was younger and maybe that that it would be a great way for me to use that energy. She asked me if I wanted to play ... and I said yes.... Why do you love playing now? Kyla: Over the years I’ve loved the atmosphere and the people I’ve met in different teams. Mum and Dad always pushed me to be the best I could and I have had some amazing coaches along the way who all encouraged me and helped me to improve. I love netball because it pushes me stay active and I just love the fast pace and competitiveness of the game. I also love that I get to connect with so many different people on court, as well as off court. 23.01.2022 FURY | Why We play series | Emily McMillan from our Blacktown City Netball Association Inc Fury Pathways side shares her 'why' with us. Why did you start playing? Emily: It all started when I was 7 and I would have to go and watch my mum play netball every weekend. I didn’t really enjoy watching the game but my mum thought it might be a good idea for me to give it a try instead of dancing. I am so glad she did sign me up because I have loved every second of it. ... Why do you love playing now? Emily: Netball hasn’t just allowed me to become fitter and stronger, it gives me an opportunity to zone out and focus on just playing the game. It has also given me more confidence to grow as a person. I am continually learning new skills on and off the court. I will always have a strong connection with the sport, I know that even when I’m not playing I will find a way to be involved anyway I can. I love the fact that I am continually making new friends and am able to watch each of them show their amazing talents whenever they play. Netball allows me to uncover new skills and meet new people, I know that wherever I go, netball has and will always be a big part of my life. Why did you start playing? Clancy: I started playing netball when I was 6. I wanted to play netball to try something new as I had been dancing for a few years. My mum also had a huge influence as she was also a netballer in her day and wanted me to play. ... Why do you love playing now? Clancy: I love playing netball now as it is a place where I can be myself, I can forget about any problems and put my energy into something positive. I love the environment, I enjoy being competitive and pushing myself to be my very best. Netball has helped shape the person that I am because of the skills I have learnt through playing a competitive team sport. 20.01.2022 FURY | Why We Coach | Nardia Macdonald will lead her GWS Fury Opens team into battle this coming Wednesday night as Head Coach. Here is her 'why' story. Why did you start playing? I started playing at age 5 in under 7s as my mum played umpired and helped run our local club Greystanes. I loved watching her and couldn’t wait to play. My passion for the game grew every week. I loved the mateship, fitness and skills. I always loved being part of a team and playing for the girls... around me. It has taught me strength, power, reliance and patience (mainly umpires haha). I was blessed to have the opportunity to play at club, association, state and national level. Some of my closest friends and highest achievements are from these circles. Why did you start coaching? I always wanted to give back to our game, I started with some specialist sessions to help local rep teams and it inspired me to want to coach a team. Sharing the love of the game and just teaching others what you know was awesome. Helping others grow as netballers was empowering and so satisfying to know you were a part of their journey. Why do you love coaching now? The drive to keep learning about our awesome game enticed me to keep progressing through the NSW coaching accreditation. Coaching has never been so rewarding. Currently coaching my daughter in 13s and watching them grow as netballers and young women, coaching upcoming coaches from around the state help better their skills, working with the state’s top underage players fine tune their personal strengths and of course the GWS Fury Opens. Their endeavours to be the best as a team and individuals is inspirational. Watching them achieve something through our training together is an amazing feeling. 20.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play...Coach | Elicha Reitsma is our successful GWS Fury Under 23s Assistant Coach - a dedicated and passionate coach heading into her 3rd season with the U23s. Here is her 'why story'. Thanks Elicha. Why did you start playing? Elicha: I love to play netball, any team sport actually but netball came so naturally to me, always being tall and stretchy. I was encouraged by a primary school teacher, who was coaching the school netball program at the time. She was... an ex-national South African (what we know are the SPAR Proteas today) netball player so that was pretty cool. She was an incredible mentor to me for 5 years was I played under her and made me want to play the sport more and more. Why did you start coaching? Elicha: It was a perfect opportunity for me to give back to the sport. I was loving playing and was also umpiring and naturally found myself taking on the role of 'guiding' and educating younger players and athletes on the court so I thought I would take the opportunity to see how doing that in a coaching role would feel. Why do you love coaching now? Elicha: Because I love the challenge it presents. Coaching is not just about sharing what you know, it is about the opportunity to be a part of someone else's sporting and life journey and challenge them to be better every day, at the same time challenging yourself to find what makes your athletes happy and confident and have a positive impact. 20.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Courtney Castle joins our GWS Fury Opens Team in 2020 after a premiership winning season with the GWS Fury Under 23s in 2019. Courtney's love of the game is evident in all she does and we thank her for sharing her 'why story' with us. Why did you start playing? Courtney: I actually started playing because my mum played for fun and me as a 9 year old at the time really wanted to just get on the court and show them I could out play them. That year..., mum put me in and netball has been my life ever since. Why do you love playing now ? Courtney: I love everything about the sport, the early mornings, late nights, tournaments, last few sets of sprints in the conditioning sessions, the COMPETITIVENESS, the resilience you need to have, the challenges - physically and mentally, being able to pick a coaches brain and experience different coaching staff and being able to just do what I love with other people who also love it makes it even better. I guess I just couldn’t imagine myself not playing netball, I love it all, it truely is something special and it means so much to me. Caitlin shares her story with us. Thank you Caity. Why did you start playing? Caitlin: I started playing at about 5 years old, my mum loved the sport growing up and signed me up and I haven’t looked back since.... Why do you love playing now? Caitlin: From a young age I remember having such a passion for the game. I love the physical and mental challenge it brings with it, the friendships I’ve formed as well as the many lessons I’ve learnt along the way. I’m grateful for the setbacks and the drive that it gave me to work harder. Most importantly, to be in such a supportive environment, surrounded by girls who have the same goals, is what makes the game so special. Image: (left) A young Caitlin loving her junior netball with @AppinWaratahsNetball Club (playing with Camden & District Netball) and (right) this year with her Fury Opens side at the 2020 Heart Kids Cup.
18.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play Series | The awesome Mallorie Jansen from our BHSNA Pathways Team in 2020, shares her 'why' story with us. Thanks Mal - you're a legend. Why did you start playing? Mallorie: My mum and her family all grew up playing netball and absolutely loved it. So when I was a keen little five (5) year old, my Mum decided to sign me up too. I fell in love with the game very quickly. ... Why do you love playing the game now? Mallorie: I love playing now because it’s one of the few things that I do for myself - purely because it makes me happy. Playing netball has not only improved my athleticism, but it has also taught me so many important life skills. There is no better feeling than being on the court, feeling fit and strong, smashing it out with my team mates. I love putting my body on the line and giving my everything to fight for the win for my team. I also love playing now because of all the incredible people involved. I have created so many friendships that will last a lifetime. How good is netball right!?! Karina: I started playing netball around the age of 13 because one of the local teams was looking for players. I went along and watched a game and thought that it could be fun to give it a try. I haven’t looked back since. ... Why do you love playing now? Karina: I love playing because of the challenging nature of it. It also gives me such an escape. When I take the court at training or a game I leave everything else at the door. I absolutely love the feeling of being out on the court alongside my team mates. 15.01.2022 Fury | Why We Play ...& Coach | Tysan Allen joins the BHSNA Division 1 Team this season as Assistant Coach. Tysan share with us his 'why' story. Thank you! Why Did you start playing? Tysan: I started playing for my high school team. I had always played rep basketball and thought netball would be fun! We went on to win the CHS state cup where I was scouted to trial for NSW. I’m grateful that I did because playing has given me lifelong friends and memorable experiences like tra...ining with the Diamonds and even playing in South Africa. Why did you start coaching? Tysan: I started coaching at state age in 2013 because the small town I’m from needed a coach! Not the greatest start - my first State Age we didn’t win a game! The following year I moved to Sydney and joined Baulkham Hills and have been coaching ever since. Why do you love coaching now? Tysan: I still coach now because I love the game. I love the tactical part of netball and being creative with different styles of attack and defence. It’s fun! Image: (L) Tysan Team getting ready to represent the Australian Sonix (Open Men’s Australian Team) - the photo is taken just before his first test match in Wellington, versus the NZ Mens' Team. 15.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | From our BCNA Fury Pathways team, Olivia Dyer shares her 'why' story with us. Why did I start playing? Olivia: Growing up I was very inquisitive and wanted to do everything. I starting doing ballet and soccer (very controversial I know), but all my friends were playing netball. Being the eager child I was, I also now needed to do netball (2010). I instantly fell in love and have never left.... Why do you love playing now? Olivia: I love being known as the netball girl. I love the idea of everything netball and surrounding myself with it. The atmosphere of training, a game, trials and now even a zoom meeting, is indescribable. No matter my mood I know netball is guaranteed to make me smile. Netball is a place I can vent, a place where I can escape the problems of the outside world and somewhere I can put all my focus. I am a very chatty and energetic person, and netball allows me to express all that energy into a positive place. 14.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play (...and coach) series | Elise Edney loves the game and her Blacktown City Netball Association Metro League 1 team wrapped up their 2020 season on Thursday. As head coach of the BCNA Division 1 side Elise shares with us her passion for the game as both a former State player and current coach. Why did you start playing? Elise: It was a hot summer night when I watched my first game of netty. It was literally love at first sight. At the end of the game I said ...to my mum ‘that’s what I want to do, I want to play netball just like you’. I’ve played, coached and occasionally umpired ever since. I was always encouraged by my dad and have been very blessed in my playing career, getting the opportunity to play and train with some of the greats of our game. For me the whole world disappears when I walk on the court and I just know that I’m where I’m meant to be, these are my people. Why did you start coaching? Elise: I’ve always found joy in helping and teaching others, so becoming a coach was a natural progression. Why do you love coaching now? Elise: Seeing my players faces light up when they finally nail a skill or reach a goal they have been working so hard for is amazing and pushes me to work harder to become a better coach. To be able to connect with and encourage incredible young women to build their confidence and grow as people in the sport that I love is why I keep coming back each year. Image: (right) Elise playing for the NSW State Team at the National Championships in Tasmania and (left) as head coach of the 2020 GWS Fury Pathways Team - Blacktown Metro League Division 1.
13.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Clare Iongi has been with GWS Fury since 2017 and has represented both our U23s and Opens teams during the four seasons. Why did you start playing? Clare: I started playing because my best friend in primary school wanted me to play for her club team on Saturdays and other girls from my school were playing too. So I registered to play and I’m in love with the game.... Why do you loving playing now? Clare: I love the family environment netball brings. I come from a big family as a lot of people may know, so meeting new people through netball and being able to call them my family too is such a blessing. I also love the different challenges netball brings and so as a family/team we drive each other and support each other through them no matter what. No one above, no one below, always beside. Why did you start playing? Alison: I watched my sisters playing and I thought I want to give that a go! I used to cheer my sisters on and couldn’t wait to wear the uniform, be in a team and shoot!... Why did you start coaching? Alison: I loved everything about netball, way way back I enjoyed umpiring and a natural progression was to give coaching a go. I watched my mum coach, whom is my mentor. I was in awe how my mum would shape and transform a team and the difference from the commencement of the comp to the completion of a season. Why do you love coaching now? Alison: I’ve been coaching for over 34 years and I love the ever changing game and challenges of always adapting your coaching to suit the make up of your team, players and opposition. I’m really enjoying our team this year as there’s such a variety in age and experience but such amazing talent! Very exciting!! 11.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Ashlee Shimmon joins our GWS Fury Under 23s team this year and shares her 'why' story with us. Thanks Ash! Why did you start playing? Ash: I was a bit of a crazy kid with a ton of energy! I was already active with swimming, athletics and dancing but my parents believed in the importance of team sport (also another way to burn some energy!) so they signed up to netball when I was 6.... Why do you love playing now? Ash: It’s the people you get to meet and ‘buzz’ moments you share as you work towards and achieve a common goal. It’s more than just a scoreboard win; it could be a resilient fight back during a match, successfully executing something the team has been relentlessly practicing or those crucial times in a game when the team builds momentum, lifting everyone’s confidence. These adrenaline rushes and moments of pride you get to enjoy with your team are what fuel my love for the game. Image: Ashlee taking to the court in a training game with her Fury U23s team mates in early March 2020 and (right) Ashlee starting as an Under 7s netballer with Baulkham Hills Sports Club Netball Division playing at Kellyville (Baulkham Hills Netball).

10.01.2022 Fury | Why We Play series | Cassandra Radford from our 2020 GWS Fury Opens team hares her 'why' story with us. Thanks Cass. Why did you start playing? Cass: I started playing, as like a lot of girls, because my big sister did. I really enjoyed the game and had lots of fun playing with my friends as a young girl. I remember mum signing me up for rep trials and not having a clue what it was for. I didn’t make the team but after that I started to put a lot of work into netball a...nd wanted to take the next step up. Why do you love playing now? Cass: I love playing and continue to play now because I enjoy the competitive nature of the sport as well as the company of my teammates. Netball has also given me a lot of great friendships over the years and is a fantastic support network. I love the energy and sportsmanship of the girls at fury and they make continuing to play so worthwhile. I am grateful for all that netball has given me over the years and for the person it’s allowed me to become. 09.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Allanah Gilbertson joins our Baulkham Hills Netball Fury Pathways team in 2020 and shares her story with us. Thanks Allanah. Why did you start playing? Allanah: I began playing netball at the age of 9 because my older sisters both played and I thought it looked really fun. I also got very bored of watching them play all day and just wanted to join in! My mum had also grown up playing netball alongside her friends so she was happy for me to get invo...lved. Why do you love playing now? Allanah: I love playing netball as it has pushed me to become the best player/person I can be on and off the court. It has been a great way to channel out any negative things that have happened throughout the week in a positive way. As soon as I show up to training, or step onto that court all my worries and doubts disappear. I have met incredible people who have taught me many life skills that I will never forget. This amazing sport has helped me stay mentally and physically fit and healthy, as well as helped me meet new people and make lifelong friends. Netball has helped boost my confidence and achieve goals I would have never thought possible before. I have loved every moment of my netball journey and I would not trade it for anything. 08.01.2022 FURY | Why We play series | Taylah Clarke share her awesome 'why' story with us. Taylah plays in our Fury Pathways team with Baulkham Hills Netball in Division 1 of Metro. Why did you start playing? Taylah: I started playing netball when I was seven years old. I was a dancer, so I was very nervous going to try a team sport. After one game, I loved it and was that one player that wouldn’t give that GA bib to anyone else until my Mum dragged me off the grass courts. I still pla...yed after that surprisingly, and really enjoyed playing in a team environment. Why do you love playing now? Taylah: I love the competitiveness that there is in netball and enjoy playing with a talented group of girls. I really like the Fury structure of training, fitness and working together to be stronger and better individually and as a team. The coaches are always happy to help you and push you that extra bit further, which is really important. The bond that the game brings with playing in a team and meeting new people along the way, is something I really value in the sport. 08.01.2022 FURY | Why We Series | Caitlin Wright will take to the court with her Blacktown City Netball Association Inc Fury Pathways team this season and share her story with us today. Why did you start playing? I started playing in Year 6 for my school team with friends and instantly found my love for the game. Not long after I asked my parents if I could start playing on the weekends to replace soccer, and they were thrilled! Mainly because I was terrible at soccer. ... Why do you know playing now? Sport has always been a big part of my life and netball has become my passion. I love being competitive and pushing myself to be the best I can be, and seeing what I can achieve through my passion for the game. I have always been a big team player and love working with my team mates to achieve a common goal. Netball has also created so many amazing opportunities to meet new people and make lifelong friendships that I'll forever be grateful for. Thanks so much for sharing your 'why' story with us Ness. Why did you start playing? Ness: I started playing netball by following in the footsteps of my mum and sisters. I am not sure of when, I think I was age 6.... Why do you love playing now? There are so many reasons I play netball and these have changed and grown over the 20+ years I have been playing, but these stand out the most... > The friendships you build, there is nothing quite like a netball family. > The competition of the game. Just being on court playing is a huge high and playing against amazing athletes that challenge you to push yourself. > My mum! I associate netball with my mum so much, she was my biggest fan. Netball is a wonderful way I still feel connected to her Image: Playing U7s with @CorpusChristiNetballClub and training alongside her Fury Opens Team mates in 2020.

04.01.2022 The End of an Era - Heather Smith has made the decision not to restand for GWS Fury High Performance Manager for 2021. Heather has been the GWS Fury HPM since inception of the club in 2016. She has done an outstanding job in setting up the club in this role to be where we are today. GWS Fury was the brainchild of Heather whilst on Blacktown City Netball Association Executive. Heather was also instrumental in creating the partnership between Blacktown City Netball Association... and Baulkham Hills Netball Association. During this time, she has created a culture of loyalty, commitment and personal excellence in individual growth and team development. My tenure as your HPM has been proud, amazing and privileged to be alongside such a strong group of talented and dedicated team of great people namely FURY! We have the best placed franchise in so many respects and a responsibility to ensure we foster it in our actions, we are respected, admired and attractive to all players and support staff across the Premier League. Heather has sacrificed her personal success for the establishment of the franchise and is now in pursuit of her own personal development opportunities. On behalf of both the partner associations, the Management Committee and our staff and playing group, thank you Heather for your tireless work across those 5 years. We wish you all the best for the future. #motherfury

Sam: I started playing at around the age of 6 with friends from primary school and with my mum as the coach, following in the footsteps of my older sister. ... Why do you love playing now? Sam: I love everything about netball, being apart of a team that is supportive and hardworking. There is no better feeling than taking the court, waiting for that first whistle - then leaving everything you have out on court. Going to training knowing you will be challenged and sweat like never before and love every second of it! Pushing yourself to new limits and constantly learning new skills, different approaches and getting feedback. Making memories, working hard, creating irreplaceable friendships and having fun are just some of the reasons why I love the game! 02.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Tiana Saunders from our @BlacktownNetball Fury Pathways Team shares her 'why story' with us. This wonderful BCNA junior will make her Division 1 Metro League Debut in 2020. Why did you start playing? Tiana: I started playing when I was 7 because my older sister did and I pretty much did everything that she did including representative netball. I’d always grown up around some kind of sport which started as athletics and over the years I started to ...lean towards netball more. Why do you love playing now? Tiana: I love playing now because the team atmosphere is incredible. The friendships you make are amazing and the team becomes a second family. I love how not only physically challenging the game is but also how mentally challenging it is and I’m always up for a challenge. It motivates me to keep pushing to go as far as I can without regrets. Netball is kind of my escape where I’m not stressed and can just do something I love. The support that comes with netball is the best, not only from the team but from the parents and friends as well. Netball is all I’ve known growing up and I wouldn’t change it for anything Image: Tiana taking to the court with her BCNA Metro Div 1 team mates at the 2020 Heart Kids Cup and right, picture with her Club Coach Kalista, after winning her U14s Club GF with the Kings Langley Panthers Netball Club.

01.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Brie (Brianna) Tier loves the game in all its forms and shares her story with us. Why did you start playing? Brie: I started playing netball because I recently lived in Hong Kong and was addicted to anything outside and active, due to Hong Kong not being the prime place for outdoor activities ... when I moved back to Australia I was desperate to try everything... mum had always played netball at Randwick so she took me straight down to the courts ...and I fell in love!! Why do you love the game now? Brie: I play netball now because I absolutely love the friendships, I love the friendly rivalry and the ability to push your body physically and mentally!! Image: (left) Brie takes to the court with her Fury U23s team mates in Orange at Heart Kids Cup and (right) a young Brie with her GD team mate from Randwick Netball Association back in the day.
01.01.2022 FURY | Why We Play series | Emily Kirk from our Under 23s defensive unit shares her 'why story' with us. Emily was part of our successful Division 2 Metro Blacktown pathways team in 2019 (now playing in Division 1 in 2020) and this year Emily joins the U23s Team. Why did you start playing? Emily: I started playing netball in 2005 when I was 7 years old, after a year of watching my sister play. I went on to play with my sister (who is 2 years older) and have done so for 10 out... of the 15 years I have played. My first team was for a small country town in which I still live the Bringelly ‘Gumtrees’. Why do you love playing now? Emily: There are SO many reasons why I love playing. I love the outlet and escape that netball provides me in life. When I go to training or a game nothing else matters besides my team, our franchise, our goals and the game. I love the structure and strict routine that being apart of sport provides. Having always grown up with this and knowing no different I have realised since covid-19 just how important this is to me. And lastly, I love the competitive nature of netball. The physicality, the speed, the challenges and always aiming to improve and be our best. I am so grateful, excited and ready to take on every word of advice, feedback and opportunity that being apart of this amazing franchise will bring. Image: Taking the court in a training game with her U23s in early March 2020 and as a junior with @Bringelly Netball Club
