20.01.2022 This spectacular caterpillar is the larvae of the native Mottled Cup Moth (Doratifera vulnerans), photographed by one of our team members. Whilst its colours would probably look more suited to a life on the Great Barrier Reef, it prefers a home on eucalyptus leaves where it can feed gregariously until it spins itself into a cup-like cocoon (hence the name ‘Cup Moths’). It will then emerge as a small, nondescript, mottled brown moth with a wingspan of about 30 mm. -- The Mottled Cup Moth is just one common inhabitant of our many large-scale built and natural environment landscape projects throughout Melbourne and Gippsland. -- Cocoon and Moth image credits to Project Noah

06.01.2022 So what started as a half time deal during the grand final has turned serious! Maintenance Coordinator and diehard Tigers fan Troy Hayes sent General Manager Steve Haughton a text just before 1/2 time last Saturday that said ‘you and me are getting Dusty haircuts if Tigers win!’. Never one to back down from a challenge, Steve immediately agreed. Of course we all know the Tiges went on to dominate the second half and beat the Cats by 31 points, so the matching Dusty haircuts w...ere suddenly about to become reality. Steve and Troy decided to use it as an opportunity to raise some funds for a charity, and Troy chose Breaking Barriers, a Mental Health Advocacy organisation. So we’re putting the call out to anyone who would like to donate some funds to see these boys get the Dusty haircut! Habitat Creations will match anything raised by our team members for this worthy cause. Kylie Tuck from Style Fusion in Trafalgar is coming to the Traf depot this Friday to cut the boys hair. 04.01.2022 Completed by our planting team just 6 years ago, the Red Hill Reserve Wetland at Neerim South has filled out magnificently with the help of our amazing NRM Maintenance team. The wetland now provides critical habitat for local wildlife and beautiful green outdoor space for people. It also plays a critical role in capturing and treating water run-off from local streets before eventually flowing into the Gippsland Lakes. If you'd like to visit this wetland, it's located adjacent... to Red Hill Court (via Addison St). -- Did you know, research in a growing scientific field called ecotherapy has shown a strong connection between time spent in nature and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression? In a 2015 study, Harvard researchers compared the brain activity of healthy people after they walked for 90 minutes in either a natural setting or an urban one. They found that those who did a nature walk had lower activity in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region that is active during rumination defined as repetitive thoughts that focus on negative emotions. -- If you'd like to visit beautiful Neerim South for some much-needed outdoor therapy, we have a second short walk you can complete at the Neerim South Wetland accessible via Railway Road.
