25.01.2022 He was an AFL gun and played for the bombers, but he’s so much more.. Mark Eustice is a true gentlemen, respected friend and motivational speaker who tells his story to impact and empower others to seek support, be patient in recovery and give never up.

24.01.2022 This was a HARD video to make, but it NEEDED to be said.

24.01.2022 Triggers... As most of you know HABZ coordinates care from detox to rehab, often flying interstate and traveling to various treatment facilities. I know the clouds become a trigger at 38,000 ft above its origin and I will deny you the window seat on the plane because I know your legs will jitter, you will pick your nails and play with your hands as you look out the aircraft window and associate the peaceful, fluffy nature of the clouds with the ice pipe and blowing a massiv...e (Ice) cloud. I’m also the support worker who will choose an alternative route whilst driving you to detox to avoid the street signs of where your dealer lived or the town where you know you can score. Triggers can be broken into a few groups: emotional, mental, environmental, and those that are easily overlooked.

23.01.2022 I’ve been impacted by 5 suicides in the last two weeks. Not people I support, but people in my community. It’s devastating. The way I see most Mental Health Campaigns, including R U Ok Day, is that they’re managed by inspirational leaders, created with jaw-droppingly good intent but maybe we have it all wrong and what we, as a society are trying hard to achieve, by encouraging people to talk, is based on (unfortunately) old science! Like most frameworks of the modern We...stern World - they focus on behavioural change. Specifically, reaching out and talking to someone. What we now know is that a brain that is highly anxious, traumatised, depressed, shut down or in survival mode is a brain that will find talking exceptionally difficult! And the more overwhelming those mental experiences, the harder any cognitive process (including talking) will be! We are effectively asking the most vulnerable people in our society to do something they can’t possibly do! Perhaps if we could move all of the mental health campaigns away from the ‘talk to someone’ rhetoric and towards what recent research shows us to be true, we’d be focusing on regulating the nervous system, not talking. On connection, before communication. Educating the world about how to lower a highly aroused nervous system, so that our limbic system can calm down, so that our body can unclench, so that our cognitive functioning begins to return. So that eventually we might be able to form analytical thoughts, make sense of our experiences and take steps to get better. I do believe this is 100%, hand on heart, devastatingly critical to our future. And it isn’t just my opinion, it’s science. Until we shift the focus of mental health campaigns from behavioural action to regulatory action we will have a world filled with people doing the only thing they possibly can. Staying safe. Which involves functioning at our best, smiling, carrying on and holding it together. Because a world that asks of us that which we can’t possibly do is not a safe place. And in THAT world talking isn’t an option, it’s an impossibility for those struggling.

23.01.2022 Up, up and away! Addiction can be anyone's worst enemy, it doesn't discriminate. HABZ travels supporting many people to various rehabs. Imagine an anxious young person addicted to Ice, looking out the window - to even associate the peaceful, fluffy nature of a cumulonimbus with the thought of your next fix waiting reaks of a mindset removed from reality and of one crying for help. This case was no different, for this 18 year old - off the rails, on his last chance, testin...g the patience of the law and of those closest too him - namely his mum. We all need a rock in our lives, to support us through the journey. Fortunately for him his mother, his only rock, was worth her weight in gold - she saved his life. There was numerous hospital presentations and an admission after being shot and left in a paddock. We tried and tried for detox but each time he did a runner. I told him when you get locked up, call me, I’ll be there, just put me on your visitors list. He’d get angry, he’d get upset and say I’m not going to jail- I prayed he did - and he did. With the young offender in prison, he appeared via video link for the bail application. HABZ presented a plan to the Judge who was prepared to give him one chance! Under the strict bail conditions and undertaking, he was released and we flew to Hervey Bay. Not for the sandy white beaches to escape it all no, but to begin a 12 month rehabilitation program at Bayside Transformations. Essentially, his last roll of the dice. I’ve never witnessed a Magistrate give a kid so much credit when we went back before the Court 9 months later. He completed the 12 months and during his time in rehab he completed Cert IIII in community service, gained experience in case management and found healing through the faith based program. NOW LOOK AT THIS GUY - he is inspiring and helping others and is now a valuable colleague in the AOD sector. See more

23.01.2022 Increase happiness. Reduce stress. Boost focus. Science says you can have it all with a little bit of Headspace.

22.01.2022 Super proud of this guy and the changes he has made. Life was not great and he persisted with our help to detox, 6 months in rehab and now doing life clean and sober. Love receiving these messages! You got this mate!

21.01.2022 My 4th day - I am scared and alone, saddened that if I really want to quit I will not be able to hang out with my lifelong friendsseeing any of them brings memories of tweaked out nights when we were all connected souls from another world. Now my only thoughts are pain and sadness. It’s not easy to give up those ‘friends,’ those tweaked experiences, or the feeling of being completely invincible. Now I’m just sad and so alone and feeling anxious, overwhelmed, suffering with leg cramps, mental compulsion and physical craving and I can’t tell anyone because they are so proud of me for deciding to quit.

15.01.2022 There I was again. Rock bottom. It seemed that every time I thought it hit rock bottom, the bottom got lower and lower. I was crying in my room, uncontrollably, alone and afraid. Afraid of what I had become and the things that I had done. I was given a number of a woman who had helped a friend of mine. He said call her, she will help you. That Sunday morning, I called Jane. I was a stranger, crying in hysterics on the other end of the phone, screaming for help. Jane spen...Continue reading

11.01.2022 I had to share this with you all after a conversation I had with a friend yesterday. Today I met another young healthy tradie client in his early twenties. Has had to stop following his career and change his lifestyle, why? He drank 2-3 energy drinks a day for the last 8 yrs, at 24 he has his first pacemaker.... So, you ask? This is the 5th client in 12months I have taken to Prince Charles Cardiac ward under 25 Something I think parents need to educate what their kids actually consume Parenting 101. When completing drug and alcohol comprehensive assessments, you’ll be asked how many energy drinks you consume, because you might be considered high risk for heart attack in treatment.

11.01.2022 Whether the drug addict or the person trying to ‘save’ them. It’s the same compulsion. Taken from the Woke Blokes Podcast

10.01.2022 HABZ is supporting another person to rehab today. Yesterday he changed his mind and refused to go - the anticipation leading up to the event is greater than the event itself, however, we are here!

10.01.2022 There are multiple pathways to recovery and today I ran into an awesome young man who shared with me this hypno app that he has found very useful and he is now 6 days clean - he said there was a shift. So I’m sharing it with you.

08.01.2022 This little gem started her recovery in 2017. I remember the first day we met when life was nothing like it is today. Her ambition, strength an ability is unrecognisable with aspirations of great things to come. She has strong core beliefs, is very balanced and like a sun flower she is bright and brings sunshine to my life.

07.01.2022 For some children, the shame of having a parent who abuses drugs prevents them from reaching out to others for emotional help and support. Addiction in the home leads to a conspiracy of silence, where many kids affected by addiction continue to suffer poor mental and physical health as adults.

06.01.2022 Following a number of court appearances, the County Court Judge requested I take the stand under oath and undertake to facilitate this young man’s entry into a 12-month, long term, residential treatment interstate. A deferral of sentence was given to give him one last chance. Although overwhelmed, he has arrived safely interstate, checked in within the time period and now HABZ will continue to monitor his progress and report accordingly to the Court and Informant in a few months.

05.01.2022 Dr Gabor Mate: The origin of the word ‘trauma’ is the Greek for ‘wound’. Trauma is a wound. How I think about it is that if I wounded you, if I cut your flesh, the healing would involve scar tissue forming. If the wound was great enough, you’d get a big scar, and it would be without nerve endings so you wouldn’t feel, and it would be much less flexible than your normal tissue. Trauma is when there is a loss of feeling and there is a reduced flexibility in responding to the world. This is a response to a wound. It induces fear and now you’re acting out of fear. So without knowing it, your whole life is regulated by fear and pain that you’re trying to escape from in various ways.

03.01.2022 The best meditation app for busy people.

03.01.2022 Today we boarded an interstate flight to support another young person to rehab. She was not a willing participant two weeks ago when she was coming down. She told us to EFF OFF! But we came back - again and again - we listened, we asked questions, we motivated, we wiped tears, we detoxed, we jumped at an opportunity. Recovery is not an event - it’s a process.

01.01.2022 PLEASE READ... Like the nursery rhyme about the woman who swallowed a spider to catch a fly, I am constantly medicating with various drugs to regulate my emotions and to make the world seem okay for an hour or two while I wait for treatment.........
