22.01.2022 Look what weve done around town! The High Holidays are ON. If you havent already, you can register for a volunteer shofar blower to come to your home!... I plan to stand at the entrance of Hamerkaz on Sunday and blow the shofar for you... we have received govt permission to do small shofar blowing outdoors. For hamerkaz youll need to register at www.hs.org.au/shofar2020. We also have over 400 registered volunteers fanning around melbourne so that most streets with Jewish population (according to the census) have a shofar blowing on the street. A kindest person and most beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. A true matriarch of her family. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Monday) at 11am, at the Springvale Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, 50 Browns Road, Springvale. 05.01.2022 To Our Beloved Hamerkaz Family, Today's announcement by the Premier was greatly disappointing for all of us, but we are committed to being a source of hope, support and connection for our community. We are thinking of you and are here if you need us. Our Chesed Committee is always happy to offer a helping hand.... As it stands now, unless there is any last minute 'break-through', our Synagogue will not be open this Rosh Hashanah. We want to assure you, however, that we will continue to offer a range of events and programs. Starting with an inspiring concert (co-hosted tomorrow Monday 8pm), a special talk by former Chief Rabbi Israel Lau to our Hamerkaz community (this Tuesday 8pm), and a spectacular online Children's Carnival, we have many programs for adults and children alike. Please stay posted, check Hamerkaz Centre, or visit www.hs.org.au/hh2020 for regular updates. We are determined to help you make these the most meaningful and memorable High Holidays! We are preparing a moving Pre-Rosh Hashanah Virtual Service, led by our community's beloved Chazanim from Israel, bringing you our favorite High Holiday songs to get you going, along with my sermon and words of inspiration. We are also putting together a gift-box (for all Shule seat holders first) and other online resources that will be accessible to everyone. These will include an @Home Guide to assist in your prayers at home plus other useful items - including your very own Shofar! We are compiling an abbreviated Machzor (prayer booklet) in Hebrew and English. We will post the online resources once they are ready. The Shofar will be sounded by me and others at different locations (dependent on government guidelines that we are currently exploring). We have collaborated with a group of Rabbis and launched "Project High Holydays" to allow as many people in our community to hear the Shofar. Please stay tuned to hear the tune! We are currently in quarantine in Sydney, but our hearts are with you in Melbourne. We know many of you are struggling, perhaps even more so after today's announcement.
