18.01.2022 Attention dog owners! Leptospirosis update 18-01-2021 We want to give you an update and a summary about recent leptospirosis cases in dogs in Sydney over the ...past few months. In August 2020, four cases were identified - in Newtown, Crows Nest, Balmain and Paddington. The dog from Balmain made a full recovery. The other dogs sadly had to be euthanized. The dog from Paddington had been fully vaccinated against leptospirosis 10 months prior to presentation with the vaccine currently used in Sydney which contains the strain (serovar) known as Copenhageni. We were unable to identify the causative strain (serovar) in this dog as the dog died so quickly that it did not have time to develop an antibody response. In September a case was identified in Firefly, 300km north of Sydney. The dog was euthanised due to kidney failure and the causative strain could not be identified. In October a case was diagnosed in a dog from Cheltenham. This dog is a working dog used for sheep herding. In this case serovar Hardjo was identified as the causative serovar. The reservoir hosts for this serovar are sheep and cattle. The dog progressed to developing long term kidney disease but remains in stable condition at this stage. In December a case was identified in Annandale in a 9-week-old puppy. The dog had been adopted from a farm in Armidale 12 days prior. The dog sadly had to be euthanised due to kidney failure and the responsible strain could not be identified. In 2019 we saw 8 cases between May and November and these dogs lived in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Glebe and Redfern. We recommend vaccination in dogs living within a 5km radius of Surry Hills, in Annandale, Balmain, Newtown, Paddington, Crows Nest or its immediately surrounding suburbs or if your dog is in contact with rats. Please discourage your dog from having any contact with rats and don’t let your dog drink out of puddles or other stagnant water sources. The vaccine needs to be given twice, 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney and therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can become infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through the mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).

08.01.2022 Domesticated animals should give us an empathy for other wild animals in showcasing their beauty and importance in the natural world. Unfortunately we are looking at 30-50 percent of animals to be extinct by mid-century. Reference below...... https://www.biologicaldiversity.org//extin/references.html It's sad guys, oh so sad.
