21.01.2022 The 3 masted Schooner City of Melbourne c. 1850, originally powered by a unique oscillating cylinder & piston engine. She was primarily a passenger ship, plying Melbourne to Tasmania but had a variety of uses over her lifetime. She had many mishaps including groundings, fires and on a couple of times was salvaged and refitted as a sailing ship. The connection with our area occurs in her later years when she became the first ship to transport Kanakas from the Pacific Islands... to the Wide Bay and Rockhampton areas. This blackbirding as it was called saw many South Sea Islanders forcibly transported to Queensland to work on the canefields. Whilst still engaged in the kanaka slave trading, she grounded on the Wide Bay Bar in 1870 and was written off by her insurance underwriters. The Wide Bay Bar is an area of shallows immediately to the east/south east off Inskip Point and the bottom end of Fraser Island. She was eventually towed into Tin Can Bay but the damage was not as bad as first thought. She was sold to Edward Priddy of Maryborough in 1871. She was towed back to Maryborough and beached opposite the Eaton Sugar refinery in the Mary River. She made several trips from Maryborough to Sydney, Newcastle and Rockhampton but was eventually put up for sale and bought by William Pettigrew & Co and used to transport sawn timber from the Pettigrew & Sims Sawmill at Dundathu and Maryborough to several ports along the East Coast of Australia. Her end finally came in 1973 whilst returning to Maryborough from Mackay. She encountered a bad storm and was wrecked some 8kms. north of the Burrum River mouth. All of the crew were saved but the City of Melbourne beached and was totally wrecked. Being a wooden vessel, no thing remains of her.compared to the Maheno! Her anchor was snagged by a fisherman on the Wide Bay bar and is now on display at the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum. William Pettigrew was instrumental in building the Cooloola Railway to transport timber and commissioned John Walker & Co in Maryborough to build the first steam engine in Queensland, the Mary Annthe replica of which was built by Olds Foundry in Maryborough and is still a major Tourist attraction. For further reading, the story of the City of Melbourne’ is available from the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum. The information is in a book donated to us by the Author, Graeme Broxam entitled The Bass Strait Ferry City of Melbourne. See more

18.01.2022 Following our Museum’s acquisition of historic glass slides from the Central Theatre at Scarness dating from the 1930’,40’s and 50’s, our historian, John Andersen, presented the story of the slides on Channel 7 Local News. Amazingly, he received a phone call from a 93 year old man who had kept in his possession for some 70 years, a collection of similar glass slides of songs from World War 2. Again, these could have been so easily lost forever in the town rubbish dump! The s...tory of the slides tells another chapter in the history of Hervey Bay. During World War 1 & 2, two Organisations, the Red Cross and the Australian Comfort Fund, were authorised by the Australian Government to raise funds to supply parcels for our troops serving overseas. The local area Australian Comfort Fund Committee organised many Concerts and Community events to raise money. It is hard to imagine today, but War time Scarness saw sheets strung across the Scarborough Hotel (now the Beach House) as a movie screen and a MAGIC LANTERN PROJECTOR used to project the words of songs for Community singing! The park adjacent the Hotel would fill with locals who would join in the Community singing and for a short time forget the horrors of War. This was just one way of raising funds for our Troops as the bucket was passed around during the singing. The collection of 54 glass song slides have been digitised and amazingly today, some 80 years later, most people still know many of the songs. You can see copies of the actual glass slides here and further details about the Australian Comfort Fund. Our duty as a Museum, is to collect and preserve stories such as this and again, as we have done so many times before, ask that you carefully consider old items you may think are rubbish but make sure they don’t end up as landfill in the local tip! John Andersen, Historian, Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum. See more

16.01.2022 We have just obtained the last of the flooring timber from the Great Hall. We have enough to make 10 more sets and after that there is no more timber. They are going out of the door very quickly so you will need to get in quick to secure one We are planning a new set incorporating Australian Pennies in the near future. These will be made from Australian timber of different sorts. More later. We have lots of other unique souvenirs made by our Blacksmith. Check them out in our Reception area. All very reasonably priced. We still have plenty of the unique Commemorative boxed pens, both Great Hall and Urangan Pier. They make great Christmas presents.

15.01.2022 New Exhibition explores Australians love of boats Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum8th May 2021 Remarkable Stories of Australians and their boats ... Australia’s history is populated with maritime related stories. With over 1,000 rivers and a coast that stretches for more than 36,000 kilometres, it is no surprise that Australia abounds with stories of people who have lived and worked on the water. This exhibition presents some of those stories, exploring the remarkable connections between people and their boats. Remarkable, created by the Australian Maritime Museums Council (AMMC) and the Australian National Maritime Museum, provides an opportunity for regional audiences to hear national and local stories. 34 stories were nominated by maritime museums and heritage institutions from around Australia with 12 of the most compelling stories selected to feature in the exhibition. Check out our own historically registered boat in the fishing shed behind the Stables. After a period of drought, bushfire, Covid-19 and floods the chance for regional communities to enhance a national exhibition with their own content is a great opportunity for outreach and community development. It gives affected communities the chance to share their stories both locally and nationally, said Kevin Sumption, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum. Remarkable Stories of Australians and their boats is on an 18-month national tour across regional Australia. All 34 submitted shipwreck stories are available now on the AMMC website in a digital archive at Shipwreck Stories. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Vision of Australia program. This exhibition is being held in conjunction with our Antiques Fair, 8th May 2021 About the exhibition Remarkable is presented by the Australian Maritime Museum Council (AMMC) and the Australian National Maritime Museum and is the result of a national project with workshops held across the country. The project was undertaken to create opportunities for community outreach and encourage the participation and collaboration across Australia’s maritime cultural institutions, providing a platform for the inclusion of diverse audiences. The exhibition serves to highlight the local stories of small communities that may be unknown to wider audiences and to support AMMC members in developing their own stories and content, which can be used to supplement the core exhibition theme.
