03.01.2022 The History Trust is delighted to be working with Adelaide Hills Council and the Lobethal community to develop an Interpretation Plan for the former Onkaparinga Woollen Mill site. We know that several generations of families worked for the Mill, and the distinctive Onkaparinga (often known as an Onkie) blanket has been a nostalgic family heirloom in many households. Wed love to hear from you if you have stories or objects (including blankets!) to share. Email us at [email protected] Once the place where the iconic Onkaparinga blankets were made, these industrial buildings now house Fabrik Arts & Heritage, the AHCs new arts and heritage hub, as well as a series of boutique businesses. The Council is preserving and maintaining this important part of the state's built heritage, and the History Trust will assist them in the Mills reactivation, to tell the stories of this once major employer in the region until its closure in 1992. Stage One of this collaborative project is now in progress. Research is underway into the Mills history and operations, in order to identify the key historical themes. We also intend to engage with the community as much as is safely possible in the current COVID-19 situation to seek stories, objects and images. Pictured here is the History Trusts Community History Officer, Pauline Cockrill who met with Fabriks Director Melinda Rankin, and was able to see some recently donated historic items an Onkaparinga TV Knee rug and some photographs from the 1971 flood, showing staff clearing up the debris and rescuing stock from the buildings.
