20.01.2022 PASSING OF THE WEIGHT AT DFSS-MCISW Article author: LSCIS Peta Binns Photographs: LSCIS Raymond Stanton... On Friday the 20th of November 2020, Defence Force School of Signals Maritime CIS Wing (DFSS-MCISW), located at HMAS Cerberus, gathered to farewell LCDR Joshua Maher and welcome LCDR Nathan Cole as the new Officer Commanding (OC). The parade was attended by staff, students, and distinguished guests. The ceremony featured the 'passing of the weight'. This tradition is a long-serving Naval occasion that is practised both at sea and ashore. The passing of a weight, usually a symbolic item, represents the passing of responsibility from one leader to the next and the change of command. LCDR Maher delivered a moving speech to the parade which reviewed his time at the school. LCDR Maher exits the wing, parting with the philosophy of leaving the place better than you found it. During his tenure at DFSS-MCISW, the school has been transformed. The building has undergone significant IT upgrades, commissioning of a new simulator, implementation of new curriculums and a renovation of the interiors. LCDR Cole comes to the school with both a fresh and optimistic view of the continued improvement of the wing. LCDR Cole has posted to the school following a phenomenally successful position in Sydney serving as the Deputy Director Fleet Communications and Information Warfare. LCDR Cole has his naval roots in the Communications Branch, joining as a Radio Operator (RO) in 1996. Since joining, LCDR Cole has seen an extensive amount of operational time as both an enlisted sailor and as a commissioned officer. In 2019, LCDR Cole was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (Military Division). His continued service to the Communications Branch displays dedication and leadership, skills that are required to continue the work of the school’s past leaders. The parade was a fine way to farewell LCDR Maher and wish him well for his next position, but also an opportunity to formally welcome LCDR Cole back to the DFSS-MCISW family.

01.01.2022 Tomorrow at 11.30am we commemorate the service and loss of HMA Submarines AE1 and AE2 during the First World War. AE1 deployed to occupy German possessions in t...he South-West Pacific, and to counter the threat of German ships in the region. On 14 September 1914, the submarine and her 35 crew members vanished without a trace. It wasn't until 2017 that She was located on the seabed off the Duke of York Islands, Papua New Guinea. AE2 began operations in the Dardanelles campaign in February 1915. In April her orders were to force a passage through the Dardanelles Strait as part of the Gallipoli campaign.
