25.01.2022 A friend whos an agroecology teacher in the Brazilian semi-arid says that when it comes to agriculture we need muscle memory! Today our working bee/class was about pruning, managing banana trees and selective weeding. The wonderful souls attending the #agrofit were @mariliafontanetti , @luisafreire and @theoosamuel ! They have received well some of the ideas I have been brewing in my head and quite soon well have an exciting project happening here! #successionalagroforestry #manyhandsmakelightwork #workingbee #experientiallearning

25.01.2022 There is no more time not to use all tools available and regenerative grazing is definitely one of them. Agroecology researchers have shown that regenerative farms that integrate animals in their systems are 20x more energy efficient than conventional 'agribusiness' style farms. Congrats Celia Leverton and Graeme Hand for leading the way to #energyresilience and #foodsovereignity !

20.01.2022 The understanding of stratification (a space dimension), in addition to succession (a time dimension) and consortium (an inter and intra species dimension) allows high density planting as well as more efficient maintenance. Drop your comments below and subscribe. Ps. This is a bilingual channel. #successionalagroforestry #foodforest #syntropicagriculture https://youtu.be/HFoKZb4HITA

20.01.2022 This looks like a #chickentractor but will be used as a small #eggmobile. Well try a system to run the chooks in between the tree rows using electric poultry net. The next few months will see major change in how people relate to their food sources. How are you planning to be food secure with the upcoming changes? #foodsecurity #familyagriculture #mobilestrutures #6buildings

20.01.2022 My #moringa trees are finally fruiting. Soon well have seeds more adapted to our climate and conditions to plant more of these amazing trees. This 5 metre long row has moringas, bananas, papayas, coffee and eucs. The moringa nearly caught up with the eucalyptuses after an apical pruning and the recent rains. This system is just under 2 years and have endured last year drought and this dry summer (until February) with amazing resilience!... #successionalagroforesyry #5forestry #regenerativeahriculture #treeoflife

20.01.2022 This course by Regrarians will bring to you a decision making process capable of ensuring your quality of life, economic viability and efficient ecological restoration strategies! Impeccable curriculum, very food didactic and a community of practice to support you along the way. http://www.regrarians.org/product/rex13week/

20.01.2022 COVID-19, economic colapse, informal household economy and agriculture as emancipatory tools were some of the topics approached by David Holmgren in this podcast. Collectivism as a genetic evolution of our species rather than an ideology was another one of David's arguments during our chat. We also talked about many of his books and their application in poorer countries such as Brazil. ... Some very timely reflections from David amidst the current global crisis. ps: Interview recorded in English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvsTQbix61U #collectivism #anarchism #permaculture #collapse #covid19

20.01.2022 Still about plenitude. Its not that we live each and every moment and because of it we become pure happiness. Its not that we learn to accept sorrow and as a consequence suddenly sublimate it. Its not that after the storm comes stillness. Its not that at the end the righteous will be rewarded. ... Not even that the compassionate ones will thrive! Its about sadness and ecstasy nesting in the same chest. Its knowing the end encroaches and embracing the present path! Its weeping grief and celebratng the gift... all at one sight, one draw of air. Within the last year I lost my grandfather, who raised me as a son, and my grandmother. Together they thought me many things about hunting, fishing, riding, animal husbandry, cooking, preserving food, etc. And although I don't have a thenth of their knowledge and wisdom, I feel grareful in ways I can't describe... Because of their love, patience and example I know a simple life is possible and can bring much more satisfaction and happiness through connection... connection to each other, the seasons, the animals and all the life supporting systems around us. A good friend sent me one of CS Lewis reflections on how eminent death should inspire us to live present and fulfilling lives, so I translated my own thoughts on plenitude. Still not sure about how well the translation carried the original meaning. #intergenerationalfarming #degrowth #familyfarm #plenitude #cslewis

19.01.2022 Today is the last day to embark with us on this wonderfull project!! One of the products of this project is The Small Manual for the Participatory Diagnosis, Design, Implementation and Maintenance of successional agroforestry systems (aka Syntropic Farming). This manual, prepared by Dr. Walter Steenbock and me (Eurico Vianna) will be translated into English and shared with our supporters.... Please consider donating and sharing over your networks. https://benfeitoria.com/agroflorestandomali

18.01.2022 Not to be missed! Good music, amazing place and folks walking their regenerative talk!

18.01.2022 'The soil', a female noun Despite all our achievements, we owe our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains. The history of all civilizations' downfall always goes through hubris, exploitation and disconnection from the soil we tread on.... The Mother Earth metaphor is an easy one to embrace, after all, we all live in it. But when we talk about where we produce our food we say 'the soil'; a common noun (and a male one in Portuguese). The mistake starts with the type of noun, but it does not end there. We see this life-giving, nurturing layer across the planet as a soulless substrate. A means to profit. We usurp its fertility and disfigure its curves, stealing from future generations the fertility we received from past generations and we do not nurture it. This is a female layer, it has soul and harbors life. It receives seeds that in it take root. It renews itself every 28 days with the passing of the moon. The vegetation harnesses the sun's energy with which it feeds: from the micro to the megafauna. Rain water runs on and off its hairs, reaching its crevices, recharging rivers, lakes and our water table, but not before it quenches the thirst of all who inhabit in it. Like a mother, it always saves some for providence. Together with the sun, the water and all biodiversity, this layer creates all life-giving nutrients and the health of the landscape. Complex relationships of interdependence in which one cannot function well without the others. Where each ones giving creates something new, larger and mysterious. We should not tread on this layer, but inhabit it. When we see it uncovered, burning in the sun or freezing in the cold, we should cover it. And before taking what we want, we need to nurture it. For when it is nurtured, it provides more than we need. It has a sweet scent! When loved and cared for, it grows in mystery and complexity. It welcomes the sun, purifies the water, creating and nurturing all life on earth. The 'common, or male noun' cannot represent it properly! I cannot imagine anything more important than air, water, soil, energy and biodiversity. These are the things that keep us alive." #davidsuzuki #regenerativeagriculture

17.01.2022 Graeme Hand has been doing an amazing work supporting farmers with his programs and consultancies. Do not miss this one!

16.01.2022 We have organic seedling trays to sell and deliver at our farm gate. Many people have woken up for the fragility of our food production system. If you are in a position to grow food, build resilience and share the love in the coming times, please do so. We have 105 mixed seedlings per tray (mixed brassicas, leafy greens, asian greens, spring onions and beet root. WE DO NOT CUSTOMISE TRAYS and won't sell half trays. ... Delivery takes 4 weeks after order. Please PM us to order. #victoriangardens #foodsecurity #homegrown #growingcommunity #foodresilience

16.01.2022 Today my friend @gusribeiro16 sent me this first photo from nearly 2 years ago, when I was implanting our demonstration site. This week we were working in the system harvesting bananas and found 4 different mushrooms over a few metres in an area that was compacted and overgrazed in this same hill. All this have happened over last two driest summers in decades. Not bad at all... The aerial photo gives a better perspective of how the system was patterned using a #keyline plant...ing pattern; which Im sure brought had an amazingly positive effect in this systems resilience and health. #successionalagroforestry #beforeandafter #5forestry #buildingsoil #regenerativeagriculture

16.01.2022 Together with students and friends I have been dealing with a felling of hopelessness To think philosophically amidst Mother Earth's 6th mass extinction to feel the planet's pain in this moment, to find companionship in this journey and celebrate life at the same time is not for the faint-hearted ones Vortexes conduct energy from the water in a small creek to the planets revolving around the sun while the star travels the universe Dendritic patterns exchange information... and nutrients from the alveoli in the lungs to the Amazon river basin Within networks we materialise experiences from the synapses to the Noosphere and back again Everything and everyone is connected and matters in this restorative journey! From the micro to the macro! But to have a chance to plant an alternative future we need to save and seed many seeds we need to cultivate people, dreams, affection, art, aromas, flavours, music, love and laughter. Lots of love! And lots of laughter. I rather give in to love (or wrath) than to thoughts. I know them too well as they have been dwelling in my head for too long. But kindness emerges wrath erupts love overflows all invariably spontaneously without the need to think. #holisticdecisionmaking #naturalagriculture #fukuoka #impactopositivo #regenerAction featuring @theoosamuel in an #agrofit session

16.01.2022 Growth today is only a profitable business if its costs are passed on to nature, future generations, the health of consumers, the working conditions of employees and, even more, to the countries of the South*. People who have already launched themselves into various transitions - from the urban to rural areas, from the conventional to the agroecological agriculture, from a life of consumption to one in which we all produce at least a fraction of our neeeds - are among the f...ew who have the courage to break away from the current paradigm. It is amongst and through them that the Sanctuaries of Mental and Ecological Health are born. In these sanctuaries less economy means more ecology, less consumer goods, more free time, less supermarket, more health, less work, more leisure... Because "the recipe for degrowth consists of doing more and better with less *". Hence the need for us to master the various ecological design and rural planning approaches. It is the ecological and energy literacy, and the investigation of our deepest values that allows us to unite the aptitudes of the land where we live with the passions that move us. It is the creation of a holistic context for decision making that allows us to create sanctuaries that are the expression of our wholeness, to place production systems at the service of our quality of life and land restoration and not the other way around. There can only balance in movement ... otherwise it is not balance it is stagnation! What about you, into which direction are you setting yourself into?! * #sergelatouche #keyline #holisticmanagement #holisticdecisionmaking #degrowth

13.01.2022 After years of holistically planned grazing nature starts to catch on and favor larger ruminants with even more stomachs in some areas! 11.01.2022 The coming back of collective values, of solidarity and connection to the land are paramount in the building of a new way of life. Sharing we learn more, in distributed networks we realise change in many places at once, in a working be we achieve more than the sum of its parts... There is so much to be changed, to integrate, to love... And this life is so much better the disconnections dissonance caused by the consumerist society.... We want to build more Sanctuaries of Mental and Ecological sanity. If you have a place and share the same dreams send us a message. This was our day maintaining the first keyline patterned successional agroforestry at Holos! Thank you @pedrogoldgrub, @giuliafurtado, @brunabbiavatti and @francorenata for your help! Please tag the others. #successionalagroforestry #5forestry #keylinedesign

11.01.2022 In this podcast I continue my conversation with Sarah Savory, independent Holistic Management consultant and educator, dedicated to the wide adoption of Holistic Decision Making from managing households to wildlife national parks, and to show how governments and Organisations can use it to develop socially, economically and environmentally sound policies. Helen Lewis, an accredited Holistic Management consultant, farmer and educator also joins us to share her experience in te...aching the holistic decision making for non-land-based managers and regular people. We discuss the 3 most common reactions we get from people when teaching Holistic Decision Making, and we talk about the 4 Key insights that made Holistic Management possible, with some conversation on how we relate to them in our work and lives. Then we chatted about what the positive knock-on effects of making holistic decisions in our societies would be if the Holistic Decision Making Framework was widely adopted. We will keep this conversation going in order to learn better ways to teach the importance and application of Holistic Decision Making to people, so that we can facilitate its adoption into society from individual to organisational level, resulting in consistently sound decisions and policies because when our decisions are made within a Holistic Context, we are no longer reacting or adapting to our problems, we are proactively managing to ensure our decisions and policies are bringing about the lives we want in both the short and long term. If you would like us to cover any specific topic within this agenda, please leave a comment and we will discuss it in our next podcast together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTT8RPyU2ds #holisiticmanagement #holisticdecisionmaking #regenerativeagriculture

10.01.2022 Throughout hundreds of thousand years our brain evolved through simple survival related stimuli. We evolved as a highly intelligent tool using animal, but relatively limited to deal with complexity. Coupled with the use of fossil resources and an addiction to technology, our bias towards simplistic decisions becomes the main cause of the planet's devastation. If we are to have any chance of survival as a species in this planet, we need decisions that can lead us to develop tr...uly regenerative producing, housing and living systems. To do this a Holistic Decision Making capable of simultaneously tackling the economic, ecological and social complexities. In this podcast I talk to @sarah.savory , daughter of the ecologist and creator of Holistic Management Allan Savory, about how we can promote this kind of decision making in all areas we act in. 10.01.2022 Checking a severely degraded area in Bahia, a northeast area of Brazil late last year. Most farmers would really like to adopt vanguard methods of production and land management but the governments bureaucracy makes it extremely difficult when it comes to the building of dams and bush fire strategies. #regenerativeagriculture #holisticmanagement #desertification #bushfires #climatechange

09.01.2022 Native to India, MORINGA OLEIFERA has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Almost all parts of it are edible and its popularity as a super nutrient dense supplement is growing fast among athletes, active people or those searching for an extra boost in their immune system. We are selling moringa bunches and few other regeneratively grown produce here at Holos. All our products are food secure, sold at our farm gate (or delivered) respecting the social dis...tancing and health requirements we are currently going through. One cup (21g) of moringa's leaves contains: - 2g of protein (27% of its composition, which is equivalent to cows meat) - 16% of the RDA (recommended daily allowance) of Vitamin B6 - 12% of the RDA of Vitamin C (7x more than an orange) - 11% RDA of Iron (25x times more than spinach) - 11% RDA of B2 (riboflavin) - 9% RDA of vitamin A (beta-carotene) - 8% RDA of Magnesium While 8 ounces of milk can provide 300400 mg, moringa leaves can provide 1000 mg In addition to its nutrient density, moringa has high antioxidants powers, can help in lowering blood pressure, heart diseases and type 2 diabetes, reduce colestherol, and have anti-inflammatory properties to help raise immunity. #moringaoleifera #farmtotable #beyondorganicfood

08.01.2022 The #successionalagroforestry system was implemented with sweet corn, pumpkins, jack beans and beans as a placenta that will nurture and encourage the growth of the mulberries, blueberries and strawberries. We checked the trench with a hose level and flooding it with water (my kids loved it). Today well hook the pipes, cover the trench and place the banana trunks to cover the path. #greywater #3water #careoftheearth

06.01.2022 This is too good not to be shared even with the language barrier. Pedro Baiano has been practicing successional agroforestry for over 30 years and is one of the co-founders of the largest agroforestry coop in Brazil. He is also an advocate of the CSA model and is a protagonist in the Landless movement. Dr Walter is responsible for some of the most important research and publications about successional agroforestry in Brazil.... They will be talking about how to integrate animals with agroforestry systems. Presentations will be in Portuguese but since they will be sharing slides I thought some people here might be interested in watching. 8am UTC+10 24/03 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8q65PXvwIoURL272bymW-A

06.01.2022 I'm working on a very rudimentary grey water system and will be combining a successional agroforestry approach. In one area, the trench will be receiving water from a shower, a small sink and a washing machine. Along the trench a row of mulberries (medium/high strata) and blueberries (low strata. On the side lines I'll use a "muvuca" with jack beans, corn, pigeon pea and pumpkins. The paths on both sides will be covered with banana (pseudo) trunks cut in half. And below the e...xternal path (below the row) I'll plant some lady fingers. I love the versatility of banana trees. In addition to their fruit they help treat the water, provide mulch and a multifunctional path (mulch, weed buffer, prevent compaction). Another area (of the same row) I'll also use moringa trees in the consortium. #greywater #successionalagroforestry #interdisciplinaryapproach #creatingabundance

06.01.2022 Agroforestry in Mali! Last Days! We're in our final run with this crowdfunding with 10 days left to raise the minimum goal. This is a serious project in which Dr. Walter Steenbock and I will run a participatory diagnosis with local women to, collectively, come up with a few variations of design.... These will first be implemented in a demonstration site then replicated over the next 5 years in partnership with ARAF, a local NGO that focusses on local women's issue and wellbeing. Our supporters will receive a digital version of the small manual we're creating for the participatory diagnosis, planning, implementation and maintenance of these systems. Please help us fund this mission and spread the word around. Here is the link - https://benfeitoria.com/agroflorestandomali #successionalagroforestry #foodsovereignty #womenatrisk #crowdfunding

05.01.2022 During these difficult times, working towards a more resilient and community interdependent future is showing to be the only possible alternative for many of those who have accepted the fall of a decaying system, which no longer suits the needs and interests of the most. We here at Holos want to impact our community in a positive way, walking towards a more self sufficient future, not only by bringing regeneratively grown produce to the market, but now also by selling cutting...s and seedlings for people to grow food at their own gardens. Here is what we have in stock at the moment: - Lady Finger Banana suckers ($10 each) - Dragonfruit seedlings ($10 each) - Mulberry cuttings ($8 each) - Rosemary cuttings ($4 each) - Lemongrass cuttings ($3 each) - Cassava cuttings ($2 each, minimum order of five) @ Brunswick Heads, New South Wales

05.01.2022 The papaya, even though a short lived species, claims its place as an emergent. Ive been explaining succession as a time dimension, stratification as a space dimension and consortium as a dimension of interconnection, that in turn explains both how succession is fasttracked or slowed by a senescence signal. These patterns are everywhere when we learn how to decode them. #agroforestry #succession #naturespatterns

04.01.2022 MORINGA OLEIFERA Native to India, has been used in tradicional medicine for thousand of years and is highly consumed in Africa. Almost all parts of it are edible and used in traditional herbal medicines, helping underdeveloped countries such as India and Africa fight against malnutrition, providing many of the essencial nutritients for a balanced diet.... We are selling moringa bunches and few other regenerative grown produce here at Holos. 01.01.2022 We don't have ONE transition to make. We have many! And towards many directions! Neither do we have just ONE-city-to-rural vector... What we call 'the transition' are, in fact, multifaceted flows. So that the rural life can fulfill its function to give birth to a new reality, it needs first and foremost to make sense in and of itself! There is a path from a rural approach that is an accomplice to the rationale that usurps from soil to culture to a rural that connects small pr...operties in bioregional networks. There is a path from a rural that is patriarchal to an integral one in which men and women complement each other. There is a path within which energy efficiency nurtures quality of life and not the maximisation of production. These are all transitions to be made... We need to embrace "people, animals, plants, chocolate, wine, pleasant chats, friendship, love". Because as Drummond used to say "poetry is in all these things." What sense there is in thinking "one" transition from city to country, when we are still constrained by the idea that the function of the rural life is to produce for those living in very cities and towns we would like to empty? "To love and to change things is what interests me the most..." #transition #belchior #farmplanning #sanctuariesofecologicalandmentalhealth #keylinescaleofpermanence #calosdrummonddeandrade

01.01.2022 This is likely the first successional agroforestry system implemented to a Keyline Planting Pattern. This is a roughly east-west fly over showing system 2 at Holos. This system was established on a secondary ridge with a south facing slope. Amongst other contextual demands, this system was set to receive greywater from 3 houses in the property, and I decided to line up all the high strata trees north-south as to create corridors of light when these trees develop their canopy.... Rows were planned to have a 1 in 100m fall, but they ended up with a bit more slope as the tractor slid a bit close to the ridge line. #successionalagroforestry #keyline #quarentineactivities #sanctuariesofmentalandecologicalhealth

01.01.2022 The system to treat #greywater with a #successionalagroforestry is almost finished. In this first picture we can see one corrugated pipe delivering water from a shower and a sink, and another one (coming from the washing machine) buried alongside the agi pipe and delivering the water at the farm end of the trench (second pict). Tomorrow Ill finish placing the banana trunks and more mulch. I used different tree consortiums for areas with different sun exposure, a misture of ...beans, lettuces, pumpkin, corn and okra as a short cycle placenta. Waste water being used to produce food... so simple... #familyfarm #agrifit #3water
