25.01.2022 Considering cosmetic surgery? Or know someone who is? Nearly all cosmetic surgery will require the use of anaesthetic drugs. And while Australia and New Zealand... are two of the safest places in the world to have an anaesthetic, it's still important to be aware of the risks. This new factsheet has been developed by accredited specialist anaesthetists to help patients make informed decisions and know what questions to ask before agreeing to a procedure. http://www.anzca.edu.au/docu/cosmetic-surgery-factsheet.pdf

24.01.2022 A very good article to help understand what Anaesthetists (or Anaesthesiologists) actually do. In the theatre environment it is definitely a team approach, with everyone having very important and crucial skills, whether they be nurses, surgeons, anaesthetists, operating assistants/orderlies, recovery staff, admin staff or cleaners. However, this article (written by an anaesthesiologist) is unashamedly about us as anaesthetists. (Warning: It may be slightly confronting particularly in the first part for some)

23.01.2022 PAIN FREE DENTISTRY! Imagine having your dental work done whilst asleep. No pain. No stress. No fuss. In fact, as far as your mind is concerned, it never happened! Well, imagine no more. Dr Pepper has been performing a wide range of dental procedures under general Anaesthesia for a few decades now. This is not just limited to ‘major’ dental work. Any dental procedures can be safely performed under general anaesthesia. From wisdom teeth to root canal therapy, all the way dow...n to fillings and a clean! This is not just for kids, but adults alike. Fear of going to the dentist is very common (just ask Dr Rothwell himself!!). Well, this best kept secret is now out in the open. You can opt to have your dental work done whilst under general anaesthesia. No matter what you are having done there is no judgment. Let us make it clear though. This is not sedation or ‘twilight anaesthesia’. Your procedure is carried out under full general anaesthesia, just as you would have for any other operation. This means that you are totally asleep and therefore cannot feel or remember any pain. It is provided by Dr Rothwell who is a Specialist Anaesthetist with over 20yrs experience. Have a look at his website for more information http://www.hunterspecialtyanaesthesia.com.au/ It is important to note that if you choose to have your procedure carried out by Dr Rothwell that you will be provided with General Anaesthesia, not sedation. This occurs in a private hospital with all the facilities required to provide you with the safest of care. Dr Rothwell will care for you from start to finish. He is also an examiner with the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Your safety is paramount. Dr Rothwell will tailor your anaesthetic to your dental procedure. Both Drs Rothwell and Pepper have been working together for well over 12 years. As such, they have formed a very close working and personal relationship. This translates to the best care and experience you can look forward to as a patient. Any fears, anxiety or concerns you have regarding your dental procedure or anaesthetic are taken very seriously and addressed by the team. This is especially since Dr Rothwell himself has the same fears many of you do when it comes to needles, dental work etc! Just don’t tell him I gave away his secret. www.hunterspecialtyanaesthesia.com.au www.paulpepperdental.com https://m.facebook.com/paulpepperdental/

16.01.2022 Anaesthesiologists - Guarding our patient's lives

15.01.2022 ** Public Service Announcement ** (And desperate plea from an Anaesthetist) To all those people out there who hoarded P2/N95 masks weeks and months ago from pla...ces such as Bunnings, Costco, 3M and so on clap clap! Hopefully, you actually have an idea how they work and how you even fit them correctly (many pictures out there suggest otherwise). I haven’t actually heard of any situations where toilet paper actually saves lives, however these masks do! I’m sure there are many people out there who rushed out and bought these much needed masks because everyone else was and probably not even knowing why you were buying them or what you would possibly need them for (a bit like the toilet paper crap). Ok, I get it. People were panicking. Well now is the time to do what is right and help others, like myself, to be able to safely do our job in keeping people alive. Because, without these vital protective pieces of equipment I really can’t be expected to go into that room where you or someone you know is lying, gasping for breath and about to die. And nor should I go in as I am highly likely to contract the same deadly virus. As a doctor though this is the worst dilemma to be put in. Please don’t make us have to decide who lives or dies because we don’t have the correct safety equipment to protect ourselves and others. Let me ask you this... Do you think it would be ok to send a fire person in to a burning building with no protective equipment or breathing apparatus? Or a scaffolder up 13 floors on a new building site with no safety rigging? Or a soldier into the frontline without a helmet or protective body armour (or a weapon!)? Hopefully, you can see where I am going with this. So what I am proposing is that anyone who has these masks at home who truly does not have a legitimate reason to need them (ie you are not an essential service such as a health care worker) please just hand them over. What a gift that would be. The gift of life! Saving someone’s life! There will be no judgment, just thanks for helping us to be able to help others and possibly you. As an anaesthetist put in the front line I just don’t want to end up in the awful situation of having to refuse to go in and save your life if you need intubating when the only available mask is sitting in a box in your house! If you have any of these masks or know of anyone else who does and they truly and honestly are not needed then please please please inbox me and I can point you in the right direction. Remember, we will get through this if we work together, follow rules put in place such as social-distancing and self-isolation. Many people have and will get sick. Many will die. But, many critically ill people can and will survive but only if people like myself and colleagues are giving that chance to treat patients without putting ourselves (and our families) in danger. Note: This is not a plea for masks for my own personal use. It is a plea for masks for all healthcare workers out there around Australia and the World to be able to care for our most vulnerable - those affected by COVID-19. Please think of others and do what you know is right! #wherearethemasks #helpyourhospitalhelpyou

12.01.2022 For those of you who find Anaesthesia a bit of a mystery...let me demystify it for you. Here are a few drugs I used to start off an anaesthetic today. And yes, there are even more drugs than that. A lot of people think we just give you a ‘needle’ and that’s it. Well I’m telling you there is just a bit more involved. Just a bit . Stay tuned... #hunterspecialtyanaesthesia #ananaesthetistslife #drugs #needles #sleep #wekeepyoualive #yourewelcome

11.01.2022 "As an anaesthetist, my job is to erase your consciousness, eliminate pain and immobilise your body. I alter your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. I ha...ve administered anaesthesia more than 30,000 times during my 30-year career, treating all ages from newborns to centenarians and, once, a desperately ill gorilla. The patients I care for place their faith in me, but we’ve usually been introduced only a few minutes before and they rarely remember my name after surgery. So, here’s what you missed..."

08.01.2022 Today is National Anaesthesia Day!! #NAD17 #hunterspecialtyanaesthesia #anzca

08.01.2022 National Anaesthesia Day ANZCA National Anaesthesia Day is celebrated each year across Australia and New Zealand on October 16, the anniversary of the day in 1846 that ether anaesthetic was first demonstrated in Boston, Massachusetts.

07.01.2022 So, how safe is Anaesthesia?? Modern anaesthesia is safe, despite some of the stories you hear. To compare one hour of being anaesthetised with, say, one hour spent in traffic or a one-hour plane trip, the risk of dying is about one in ten thousand in traffic, about one in one million in an aircraft, and one in 100,000 500,000 during the anaesthetic. If you compare one hour of having an anaesthetic with an hour of air travel, then the risk of dying is about five to ten tim...es higher during the anaesthetic. In contrast, an hour spent parachute-jumping carries a risk of death about 20 100 times that associated with anaesthesia. The safety of anaesthesia has increased over the years, even though much more complicated operations are being performed, for patients with more severe illnesses. For example, in Australia, the risk of death associated with anaesthesia has decreased to one-tenth of what it was thirty years ago. You can be confident that modern anaesthesia is very safe. #hunterspecialtyanaesthesia #ANZCA See more

04.01.2022 Good morning all!

03.01.2022 Before Anaesthesia, Patients were Told to Bite the bullet. This popular phrase has meaning that dates back to a time before there was anaesthesia. A wounded patient, often a soldier, would be told to bite the bullet while enduring painful surgery without anaesthetic. Aside from bullets, patients were often given sticks, leather straps, and other objects to clench between their jaw during painful procedures. As you can imagine, this was not a very good alternative to modern anaesthesia, and we are very thankful so much has changed!
