25.01.2022 Swimming is one of the best low impact ways to both exercise a dog in summer and keep them cool. It can be especially beneficial as therapy for dogs who are rehabilitating from an injury or surgery, have joint problems, or are older or overweight. Also fantastic for growing puppies as you don’t want to put pressure on their growing joints and bones. Swimming provides numerous health benefits, including strengthening the heart & lungs, decreasing inflammation, increasing metab...olism, & improving circulation which helps keep the skin and coat healthy. Plus, moving their limbs against the resistance of the water uses every major muscle group, improving overall tone and strength. This combined with a healthy diet and @iloveadogco products adds up to a healthy, happy dog who can run, play, and have fun for longer with less risk of injury. In the case of overweight dogs, it can be difficult to provide them with adequate exercise on land without overworking already-stressed joints and muscles. With the water supporting most of the dog’s weight, swimming is a great way for overweight dogs to burn calories and improve their metabolic rate without the risk of injury. Together with a balanced diet, swimming can help bring heavy dogs back down to a healthier weight. Atlas is eight years old & as an older dog, it is a great way for him to get the exercise he needs and not put pressure on his hips and joints - although he still loves his beach runs & @iloveadogco OLDER DOG PACK supports him w that. Make sure you show the dog where to safely exit the pool, but still don’t let them swim in it unsupervised and avoid pools that use harsh chemicals. A kids play pool filled with cold freshwater is much appreciated by our four-legged friends in summer

23.01.2022 Hello Lovers, With 1 in 3 dogs getting cancer before the age of 10 and 1 in 2 after 10, many of you may also face that challenge. There are many types of cancer and some breeds are more prone to some than others. Diet and nutritional supplements can help prevent or slow it down.... This week we will focus on Mast Cell tumours (MCTs). Breeds predisposed to MCTs are Staffies, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Boston Terriers, Boxers and Pugs, but others get them too. An MCT can occur anywhere on the body. They can be a raised lump or bump, on or just under the skin, and may be red, ulcerated, or swollen. Some may not change for months, others may appear and grow rapidly. It is generally unknown as to what causes them. MCTs are generally surgically removed and are usually expected to return at an ever-increasing rate. Mast cells are mostly skin cells that manage our response to allergens. Overactive mast cells can indicate a chronic histamine overload and subsequent intolerance. Some foods are high in histamines and others can exacerbate histamine levels. The effects on the body can be everything from sneezes to hives to gastro to heart arrythmia. In fact, some dogs that are diagnosed with allergies may in fact have a histamine intolerance and this can be a precursor to MCTs. Therefore managing histamine levels either through food intake or histamine metabolism and flushing from the body is key. Functional and nutritional medicine looks to understand the biosystems in play and aims to soothe or rebalance them, to allow the body to find its equilibrium and thrive. My healing hypothesis with MCTs is to reduce the pressure on the mast cell system by lowering histamine levels. This can generally be achieved through low histamine foods and histamine lowering supplements and eliminating high histamine foods. This week I’ll be sharing my recommended low histamine diet, suggested natural medicinal supplements and a recipe to get you started. If your dog is already dealing with MCTs, is a breed prone to them, or struggles with allergies, then my advice is don’t wait until the word ‘cancer’ comes out of your vet's mouth to feed your dog right.
23.01.2022 OSTEOSARCOMA I learned that word on August 22, 2015 when Ruby was diagnosed with it. I also learned: * it’s the most common kind of bone cancer in dogs (85%) * it mostly occurs in large boned and giant breed dogs (1/3 of cases are over 40 kgs)... * it’s a primary tumour usually on a limb but can also be on the skull, ribs or jaw * the median age for diagnosis is around 8 years old, but dogs as young as 3 can get it (Ruby was 5) * it is generally very aggressive (even more aggressive in the young dogs) * it is highly metastatic (spreads easily) * it’s very painful, and * it’s deadly At the time I didn’t even know that dogs got cancer! Unfortunately, I had to learn fast. Without treatment the average survival time is 2 months. Even with standard oncology care survival times are only about 1 year for ~50% of cases but some dogs (~2%) can survive 5-6 years. The primary treatment is limb amputation to immediately alleviate the pain and hopefully limit the spread. If we can’t manage the pain then it quickly comes to a tough decision about when to let them go. That’s where chemotherapy comes in. To try to stop the spread. It’s thought micro cancer cells are already circulating in the blood at diagnosis, so spread is thought to be very likely. Around 80% of dogs die from lung metastasis. The concept of limb amputation is horrific and I didn’t believe the surgeon when he said Ruby would be up running around within days or that she’d wake up from surgery with less pain than she went in. But it was true. The first few days (especially the first night) were traumatic and challenging but after that we proceeded with loads of rehab and continued Ruby’s cancer nutrition protocol. Rather than losing her within six months as advised, we got her in remission for almost 3 years. A miracle! You can check out the Ruby Recovery Program on our website to learn in detail the nutrition and natural medicines I gave Ruby, but generally it included an anti-cancer specific diet and supplements, ongoing physical rehab and fitness, a short cycle of chemo and of course amputation. #osterosarcomaindogs #dogsandcancer #caninehealth #caninewellness
23.01.2022 So the FDA has warned of a link between 16 GRAIN FREE dry foods in the US and heart disease. Some of them are here too and most brands here were not included in the review. I don’t share my view on dry food generally as a rule because a) I don’t want to judge, and b) I don’t want to pick a fight with some of the biggest ‘food’ manufacturers (see what I did there?) in the world. But! It really is time to start to rethink this dry food debacle and this grain free myth. Yes. A... myth. I’ll share more details on that later in an article I’m writing but for now I’d like you to consider more about what goes IN the food than be distracted by what ISN’T in it. Most grain free dry foods are full of carbs. We want low carbs and good quality protein. Quality nutrition not quality marketing. It breaks my heart when I hear the response to my query on what someone feeds their dog oh a high quality, grain free dry food.. it’s not their or your fault. You are being sold a lie and quite possibly chronic and serious disease. Fk grain free. Fk dry food. There, I said it. With love xx https://www.nytimes.com///dog-food-heart-disease-fda.html
20.01.2022 We were in the bakery again this week. It seems every bake is ‘the best ever’ these days. Every time I’m in there with the team now I remember being in there by myself at 2, 3, 4 in the morning baking, breaking, dreaming... sometimes burning and sometimes crying. Relentlessly listening to podcasts on entrepreneurship and business start ups while Ruby slept in the van. It seems like a lifetime ago and only yesterday. My mantra then (and now) was ‘keep moving forward’.. and I... did. It was hard but I had a dream. Making dreams a reality is hard. It’s important to get that. Don’t let something being hard stop you. Let it inspire you. Keep going. If it was easy perhaps it’s not as necessary for the world. I love the stories I get these days of dogs who LOVE our Pumpkin Passions. Some telling me they are the only treat their dog likes or that they are part of their anti-Inflammatory program and help soothe their aches. Those late nights in the bakery, just me and my dreams, are starting to rise. Thank you to everyone who buys them for their beloved dog. Especially those who buy 10 at a time! Wow! So grateful to you all. Thanks for being such awesome dog lovers. Whatever your dream... keep moving forward. 19.01.2022 They say if you want to find your passion think back to what you did for joy as a kid. This photo is of me and my beloved dog Melody in school assembly in primary school. We were featured in the @newcastleherald with this photo and a little story about us. During my presentation I did a performance of sorts that showcased Melody’s amazing obedience training with me as her handler. You see I was one of the youngest dog handlers competing in obedience trials ever and spent mos...t of my non-school waking hours with her. Training approaches and dog food were very different then but my love of dogs and solace in having them as my close friends has never waned. Recently I found a bunch of ribbons and awards we won. It seems a life time away. In fact I’d kind of forgotten it had ever happened! But here it is. It made me realise just how long I’ve had my passion for dogs and Probably why it feels so right to focus on them in my life’s work and entrepreneurial adventures. Funny how life takes us off our path but eventually, if you listen to it, your heart will lead you home to your truth. Be sure to listen to yours my friends. It’s worth it. Xx #dogs #dreams #passion #iloveadog #schoolgirl #memories RIP Melody. You were an angel to me. Thank you. Big big love Bella xxxx

17.01.2022 So this made me cry with happiness today. It reminded me why I'm doing this. Roxi was found as a pile of cancer ridden bones and given up on. Except for the wonderful souls at YP Puppy Rescue in South Australia. We're so proud to have helped on her recovery. With all of the sad news around lately, I hope this makes your heart smile as it did mine. Go Roxi. Go YPPR.... xx
17.01.2022 Time for a collective inhale... and exhale... these may be stormy times but the sun and calm will return. If you’ve ever been in a storm on a boat you’ll know that what you most need to get through it is a calm head and effective actions. Not panic and inaction. I heard a story recently that said on the refugee boats coming from Vietnam if they encountered a storm the boats that had at least one calm head, one grounded, centered person on board that others could turn to or ...who by example helped them maintain their calm, they almost always got through it. Those that had no such person, where everyone panicked, invariably perished. My dad, an avid boatsman, says that anyone can captain a ship in smooth seas, it’s when you’re in a storm you find out who the real captains are... So lovelies, in the midst of this storm be that calm person on your boat to help those around you who may be panicking or anxious. Be the Captain who can guide or soothe others, whether your loved ones, neighbours, team members, customers, suppliers or strangers, through the uncertainty to sheltered waters. A calming hug, smile, conversation or kindness. It’s the real currency. Not only will it make a huge difference to the outcome for all but you’ll feel great for having expanded in this moment rather than contracted. Bring out your best self and you’ll bring it out in others. Now is the time for calm Captains who know that the storm will eventually soften. Those who can help others to keep calm and take shelter. I don’t know where our boats will end up but if I can help you get to calm waters please let me know. We still have stock and are in production (with appropriate measures of course) so your dogs will still have good foods and medicines. I’ll be sharing tips on how to maintain good nutrition for your dog on a budget in the coming days and weeks in case you need it so don’t worry. Get in touch if you are struggling. When in doubt reach out. Love, hugs, calmness and kindness from me and Ellie Be calm. Be kind. Stay well. Shine bright xxx #dogs #captains #calm #kindness #healthydogs #nofilter #dontpanic #beyourbestself
17.01.2022 Love notes. Do you remember passing love notes around class, unknown (we naively thought) to the teacher? Whether they were for you, written by you or passed by you I always thought they had a special quality and magic. These days I have the honour of writing love notes every night when I write a note to dog lovers who have ordered from us that day. I write to them about their order and dog’s situation, and more recently checking how they are doing in these unusual times. I...t’s become a kind of ritual that I love. A connection with the dog human out there that we are serving. It is so nourishing. I hope the dog lovers love their analogue, old school messiness. But it doesn’t matter. It’s from my heart. Our dreams are that one day we’ll be helping so many dog humans that I may not be able to write red wine glazed love notes for all of them. I do hope that day comes but I think I’ll always write them no matter how many dog humans we touch. In our keyboard dominant era I miss the art of hand writing. I love to write. I love letters too. I treasure letters from both of my grand mothers that share such love and thoughts about life. I also used to have a pen pal when I was a kid (something dormant or unknown depending on your age) and I remember the joy of reading that hand written letter sent from somewhere in the world to me. Funny. Suddenly our global tech stream of a life that bombarded us with ‘mail’ has slowed down and separated us so much that my slow lane, hand written notes might now be able to truly send the love they intend and be treasured because they do. #lovenotes #dogs #love #connect #handwritten

15.01.2022 Hello lovers.. Today would have been Ruby’s 10th birthday. Happy birthday Rubylove.. my little legend and forever heart dog. She’s no longer with us but she inspired what we call a Dog Health rEVOLution. I Love a Dog exists because of her. She is the ‘dog’ in I Love a Dog. Our muse and inspiration. Her cancer fight taught us all so much in so many ways. Her determination and grace as a Tripawd drew the admiration of all who she encountered. Her almost three years in remissi...on (having been given less than six months to live) gave hope and healing to many. Especially me. To celebrate her today I wanted to highlight her legacy. The hundreds of dogs we’ve helped over the years or are continuing to help every day. These photos are a wonderful selection but there are many more.. Through our medible foods, our natural medicine blends, our advice, our love, all of which was developed for her, we’ve helped soothe and heal so many. When Ruby passed I set out to be the person I wished I could have called when Ruby was diagnosed and I wanted to make the foods that were truly healthy yet still easy and affordable. I am regularly brought to tears when I hear a story of how our range has helped someone’s dog. Especially the senior or sick dogs. It warms my heart and I think of Ruby every time. Together we are all her legacy. They say if you’re lucky once in your lifetime a dog will arrive and change everything. Ruby was that angel for me. Thank you Rubylove. You live on in my heart always and in the hearts of every dog we help along the way. Love and licks and belly rubs Bubu. Xx
15.01.2022 Meet Max. He’s just spent 2 weeks by himself in the pound waiting for his human to claim him. They didn’t. We’ll get him loved and settled, and soothe his inflamed ears, and when the time is right he’ll find his perfect home. And yes if the puppy is a go then it will be a very full house! #becarefulwhatyouwishfor #dogs #rescuedogs #welcomehome #fosterdog #dontdumpyourdog

10.01.2022 LAST DAY TO ORDER TO GET BEFORE CHRISTMAS HAPPY BODY FORMULA Moringa leaf, hemp,... barley grass & kelp This Happy Body Formula features four of the biggest nutritional rockstars on the planet. They ensure your dog is getting the full spectrum of nutrients they need to thrive and shine. Moringa is known as ‘the miracle tree’ for its intense nutrient profile. It is rich in antioxidants, proteins, vitamins, all essential amino acids, flavonoids, fibers, minerals, chlorophyll, beta carotene and phenols which help strengthen immunity and reduce inflammation. Barley grass is a natural system detoxifier and may help lower blood sugar and boost bone health. Hemp also has ample vitamins, minerals and antioxidants plus the perfect balance of essential fatty acids, Omega 3 and 6, vital for our dogs’ immunity and healthy joints and skin. Kelp is more than a healthy and vital iodine boost; it also contains sea minerals, amino acids, vitamins and phytonutrients. It has been shown to help with dental health, detoxifying heavy metals, nourishing the skin and coat, boosting immunity and energy, and some evidence suggests it may have anti-cancer properties. I created this formula as part of Ruby’s cancer recovery program. The anti-inflammatory and mega nutritional properties of the moringa, coupled with the alkalising attributes of the barley grass and hemp seeds, and the iodine content of the kelp, to me make a powerful combination. Add this mix to your dog’s meals to boost their nutrition and support their immune system. This formula is especially suited to dogs with inflammation issues, such as those with cancer or allergies. ORGANIC HUMAN GRADE PALEO VEGAN KETO NATURAL ANTI.IMFLAMMATORY NUTRIENT DENSE INGREDIENTS: Moringa leaf, barley grass powder, hemp seeds and fines, Atlantic Canadian kelp 130g and 300g Please note: these are world class ingredients of the highest order but are not classified as veterinary medicine. #dogsofsunshinecoast #dogsofthegoldcoast #canine #caninenhealth #healthydog #dogswithcancer #caninenutrition #doghealth #iloveadog #dogsofinstagram #dogsofbyronbay #byronbay #happydog

08.01.2022 Max had a great night’s sleep and we had a big walk and play on the beach this morning. He’s a bit nervous but is already gaining confidence. Last night, after a nap and food and belly rubs we were on my kitchen floor having a cuddle and I swear he had a little emotional meltdown. He started crying and yelping in my arms. Like you would if you’d just spent two weeks by yourself in prison, abandoned by your family and now knew you were safe and loved. I cried with him. I’m e...ven teary now as I write this. Ive never experienced anything like it. Broke my heart. He’s a great dog and we’ll find him the perfect home but right now he just needs love and stability. We’ve got oodles of that. Yes Garry and the Ocean Shores Butchers award winning team have taken on our range to pair with their premium meats! We’re stoked. We’ve been going in there for years for ourselves and our dogs and so proud to now be on their shelves. Thanks OS Butchers! Local dog lovers please get in there and do us and your dogs a favour by feeding them like you love them. ... Our veggie mixes go super well with 2.5-3 kilos of meat (including 10% offal) and our Miracle Greens, for a super nutritious meal. Garry has kangaroo right now for $7.50/kg which is amazing. That’s makes feeding your dog the best both east and affordable! Why accept anything less? We’re looking forward to joining many other quality butchers next year. Have a great silly season. Eat well and love well. Shine bright! Xx #dogs #dogsofbyronbay #healthydogs #butchersofinstagram #butchershop #butchers #iloveadog #oceanshores

02.01.2022 Stormy days don’t stop FUN! #getoutthere
02.01.2022 So on the weekend I had a one night stand and fell in love. This little guy was found in Brunswick Heads and as a foster carer for Byron Dog Rescue I picked him up from those who found him and took him home. He was a bit dehydrated but generally ok. I fell in love immediately. He of course enjoyed delicious and nutritious foods from us during his stay. ... Turns out he belongs with some people who live ‘naturally’ in the bush behind the beach. He stayed with me overnight and I returned him to them, and his mum and older brothers, the next afternoon. I gave them a bundle of foods and supplements for him and his brothers and of course mum. I’ve offered to adopt him. Yes. I’m ready. I wasn’t planning on a puppy but I realise how much I want them to say yes. I can’t stop thinking about him! Puppy love is very real! They love him and he is looked after but they are thinking about it. Hopefully I’ll know this week. We’ll see what the universe says... Happy International Dog Day!!! Please send good thoughts for this little guy and me. Fingers and paws crossed. Xx #puppylove #dogs #iloveadog #dogday #byrondogs #internationaldogday #love #pleasesayyes
01.01.2022 LOW HISTAMINE DIET AND RECIPE Avoid high histamine foods for at least 30 days, ideally 60 days or ongoing. These foods are considered HIGH HISTAMINE and should be avoided:... - Fermented foods (eg sauerkraut) (generally the ‘older’ the food, the more histamine) - All processed foods (including processed meats that are refrozen and thawed before eating) - All leftovers (except vegetables) - All fish - All berries and stone and citrus fruits (except blueberries which are low histamine) - Yogurt or kefir - Tomatoes, apples and eggs - Cheese and cottage cheese INCLUDE MORE LOW HISTAMINE FOODS: These foods are considered LOW HISTAMINE and should be emphasised: Watercress, pea sprouts and mung beans Ginger, turmeric, thyme, tarragon and garlic Foods with vitamin C Lean beef, kangaroo, lamb (check allergic response slowly) (pasture-raised, not grain fed) DO NOT BUY MEATS PRE-MINCED. The aging and processing of the meat increases histamines. Turkey breasts Liver Brown rice (too carby, I prefer red rice or ancient grains like quinoa and millet) Red cabbage, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower Pure peanut butter (no salt, sugar or other additives, preferably pesticide free peanuts) Coconut oil, hemp seed oil, extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil Kale and parsley and dark leafy greens (not spinach) Sweet potato (too carby for Koda) Local honey and bee pollen Root vegetables: carrots, beetroot Apples, pear, cucumber, celery Suggested Supplementation: We will post supplementation Sunday RECIPE INGREDIENTS- 1-2 grass fed steaks must be grass fed and no antibiotics. 1-2 grass fed beef/lamb liver 1-2 organic beetroot 1-2 celery stalks 1-2 carrots Milk thistle-1TSP MSM- 1TBSP @iloveadogco BUDDHA PASTE 1 TBSP @iloveadogco MIRACLE GREENS - 1TBSP Chops all finely and serve fresh.
