21.01.2022 So real quick! This wasn't all that fun!!

21.01.2022 Head of Athletic Development @jomatrain with some more great insights - - #Repost @jomatrain ... There’s increasing industry chatter about muscle-dominant vs fascia-dominant athletes. While it’s obviously a little more complex than a binary division, it’s an interesting framework upon which to assess athletes, their respective strengths and weaknesses and to identify exactly how they’re capable of producing the performances they do. Of course, these are all key to then unlocking the dormant potential of an athlete through the design of training. JG is an interesting case study. He’s an absolute animal in the gym, fuelled by an insatiable work ethic. He’s a muscle-dominant athlete, with a great capacity to move big weights. His ability to generate high bar speeds at heavy relative loads ranks among the best ever recorded in the JOMA database, which is a major reason for his sprinting success and a testament to his high level of training. However, when the relative load is lightened right off, JG doesn’t quite hit the velocities that you might expect given his capacity to throw around the heavy stuff. The data collected from his load-velocity curve parallels patterns we’ve observed on the track, indicating that JG largely generates and preserves his speed by relying on his brute muscular strength and technical proficiency rather than relying mainly on fascia and tendon driven mechanisms such as stiffness and the subsequent short ground contact times. With a few subtle shifts in training emphasis and the introduction of a couple of new exercises, we’re getting JG in touch with his tendons and fascia. By equipping him with a better ability to develop tension, stiffness and elasticity, as well as working on his rate of muscular force development at a range of loads, we're hitting areas that are essential in elite sprinting. It won’t be a surprise to see him climb the national rankings when the season heats up over summer. Smarter Sport Science. #JOMAtrain @insideoutperformance

10.01.2022 A taste of things to come from Head of Athletic Development @jomatrain I quite often pair higher intensity speed or plyo work with some heavier lifting in the same session - usually the half squat, which is my go-to for transferable strength. Some athletes will see decent increases in squat velocity with this method when compared with lifting following only a conventional warm-up. This data is the average peak set velocity reached by a single athlete across six separate se...ssions, each one week apart. Pre-loading (i.e. warm-up type) was counterbalanced to mitigate interactions with residual and accumulated fatigue. Pretty clearly, bar velocity was potentiated in sessions which included pre-loading of high intensity, low-medium volume speed or plyo work. As a bonus, there were no major differences in bar velocity in the final set, meaning the extra training load didn’t compromise the session by inducing too much fatigue. For this athlete, it’s a valuable pattern to have objectively validated. We’ll now be able to confidently exploit the principle in their program and get as much bang for buck as possible. If you’re pondering a similar setup in your own programming, consider that research indicates a high degree of variability in neuromuscular priming between individuals. Adding too much load can not only compromise the quality of your session, but may also increase your recovery timecourse and therefore impact on subsequent sessions over the week. Start with subtle shifts, monitor the responses and build from there. Smarter sport science

02.01.2022 Some more insights from the Head of Athletic Development here at IOP #Repost @jomatrain The principles underlying an effective warm-up are reasonably well established. But recent findings by Popp et al. (2017) suggest that only 32.2% of NCAA and NAIA trainers are prescribing dynamic stretching sequences in their warm-up protocols. Simple errors like this indicate a broader issue which influences training design beyond the warm-up a critical disharmony between research ...and application. Of course, the design of training is not a strict, straight-forward science, and context is everything. But as coaches, it’s our duty to at least be aware of the latest developments in sports research and, where appropriate, integrate evidence-based training into our systems. And, as researchers, it’s our job to ask better questions and provide better answers that are digestible, accessible and relevant to coaches.
