22.01.2022 When should you give people with dementia space? If you know someone with dementia, there may be situations where you are tempted to take charge. Instead, try t...o consider how you can give a person with dementia more space so they can retain their independence and self-worth. Some ways you can support are: when the person is trying to solve a problem, give them the space and time to work it out on their own. Ask them if they need your help and how they’d like you to help them. if the person isn’t responding to you verbally, be patient and give them time. Try not to rush the person or speak for them. when the person is performing a task, give them plenty of time and try not to take over or micromanage them. Not sure if you are giving your friend or loved one enough space? Take the quiz on our page below to find out. This week is Dementia Action Week, a week to understand the discrimination that people living with dementia face and the small changes and support that can make a lot of difference. For more information, please visit discrimination.dementia.org.au/action-week/day-2-space/

07.01.2022 Do you need a minute to find the right words sometimes? So do people living with dementia. In a survey we ran last year 90% of family members, friends or care...rs who responded said their friend or relative who lives with dementia has been treated with less respect than other people. By giving just a bit more time, you can help a person living with dementia to feel respected, included, independent and confident in their ability to communicate and connect with others Each day this week, as part of Dementia Action Week, we are sharing tips on how to better communicate with people living with dementia. Read more at discrimination.dementia.org.au/action-week/day-4-words/

07.01.2022 Have you completed your baseline surveys? Thank you to our newest ISLAND members who have joined our project this year. One of the most important ways you can contribute to dementia prevention research is to complete your baseline surveys. These are the first surveys you are presented with when you sign up to the ISLAND Project for the first time. If you have completed your baseline surveys, thank you. This helps us look at changes over time in our participants' responses ...to our research questions. If you have not got around to completing these surveys, please log into your ISLAND home portal: https://island.mooc.utas.edu.au/ You can complete a survey, take a break and continue onto the next survey.

Some of the simple things you can do are: Consider having the toilet door a different colour to other doors Consider symbols or photographs to indicate the function of the room Use a whiteboard or calendar to post notes of appointments. Use our online home improvement tool to discover some easy ways you can make your home more dementia-friendly, room by room. For more information please visit dementia.org.au/dementia-action-week

01.01.2022 Are you a listener? Or do you take over? People who live with dementia don’t always need you to step in to solve their problems. Sometimes they just need you t...o lend an ear and listen. Really listening to your friend or loved one is a great way to understand how you can support them. Last year we asked what discrimination looks like for people living with dementia. 96% of family members, friends or carers who responded to the survey say people act as if they don’t know what to say to their friend or relative who lives with dementia. A great way to find out what to say, is to listen. A little support makes a lot of difference. For more information, please visit discrimination.dementia.org.au/action-week/day-3-listen/
