25.01.2022 We are so privileged to hold space for our little homies to safely explore the many facets of their identity. Let’s look at how is a game of let’s pretend that... In any way important? I was observing, considering and preparing to assist a smaller group to mediate roles within some dramatic play this week when no one wanted to be the baby. The easy educator response would be to assign roles and encourage the children to share and take turns, but sometimes it’s better to let ...things play out a little The two smaller children were the nominated babies because, irl the smallest in the family generally is the baby so it’s an easy assumption to make. As it was wailed to me by one of the nominated babies, ‘I’m not a dumb baby! I can do lots of stuff!’ However, from my perspective I could see that all but one in this group were the youngest at home and they were all desperately trying to explore those perceived older roles - they get to be the baby all the time at home and they are bestowed with all sorts of baby expectations all day, every day and they wanted to explore a role with a little more responsibility ( or basically the power to call the shots .) When you get to be the Dad, Big sister, aunt or neighbour you get the privilege to have a say in how the game rolls (Even at this very young age they are developing an understanding how hierarchy works.) To put it simply the children are building and creating new constructs around how families and communities go together, you get too bossy no ones going to play with you - you don’t listen, your family packs up and heads behind the big chair on the deck to live. They already understand that generally babies get not much say in how the families operate and in this instance no one wanted to passively participate like a baby, but in this instance, I was just considering my ideas of -what if??? when to my surprise. It was ‘Auntie Jacquie’ that just randomly turned up and dragged them to the fort cafe and maybe the park if they were good, that saved the day. ‘Dad’ even rolled his eyes and said why does she always have to come and just make us go over there! (Dude, I feel you, just wait until aunt Becky turns up) My point is; that by holding that safe space for them and allowing them to explore different ideas, the children are learning about who they really are without the many, many expectations that are placed on them every single day. Children are driven to know themselves on a deeper, more intrinsic level, to get at that full understanding of who they are as individuals, I think all through life, we continue to explore who we are being versus who we are becoming so these opportunities for learning are so very vital. Have a great weekend and remember that: Babies can do lots of stuff! See more

11.01.2022 A meltdown is not a choice, it's a byproduct of a brain that isn't coping with something. And that brain needs to be showered in love, compassion and safety. Not punishment, fear or shame. https://www.allisondavies.com.au/meltdown-whats-going-on-i/

10.01.2022 Did you know the first 5 years of childhood shape their future health, happiness and growth? The brain goes through its most rapid growth in the first five years of life, that's why early childhood is so important!
