24.01.2022 202,669 hectares of new National Park More than 270,000 hectares has been added to the NSW national park estate, smashing the State’s target to increase the footprint by 200,000 hectares by 2021. NATIONAL PARK ESTATE TARGET DOUBLED ... the new additions totaling 202,669 hectares are the largest increase to national parks in a single day since 2005. In the Minister Matt Kean MP’s own words: I made a commitment last year to expand the parks estate by 200,000 hectares and I am pleased to see that we have achieved that and more in just over a year. That’s why we are taking it up a notch and doubling our initial target, with a revised goal to have added 400,000 hectares in total to our national park footprint by the end of 2022. Some of the latest additions, formally reserved on Friday, include: Narriearra Caryapundy Swamp National Park 153,682 hectares Capertee National Park addition 1,057 hectares Maria National Park addition 66 hectares Mungo National Park addition (TSR) 7,074 hectares Sturt National Park addition (TSR) 17,479 hectares The additions to Capertee National Park near Lithgow will increase protection for the Great Eastern Ranges wildlife corridor and a globally significant bird breeding area, including habitat for the critically endangered regent honeyeater. While the additions to Maria National Park will protect critical koala habitat on the State’s mid-north coast. Also included in the additions are reclaimed Travelling Stock Reserves (TSR) in the State’s far-north west that are already managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

23.01.2022 Australians have paused to reflect and pay tribute on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month since 1918. Groups of up to 100 people will be able to gather for Remembrance Day services after the approval of a one-off exemption from COVID-19 restrictions. The one-off exemption to the Public Health Order increases the current restrictions from 20 people to 100 people, to gather at community war memorials, provided they adhere to social distancing measures and have a COVID-19 Safety Plan in place.

21.01.2022 40 years of advocacy! Delivering real results to improve and protect Curl Curl Lagoon. It was a privilege to say a few words at the 40th anniversary. The Lagoon is lucky to have such committed people who have come and gone over 40 years to ensure it continues to prosper. ... Thank you to all the volunteers! The Lagoon has been a passion project since my first day in the job. In fact, I spoke about the importance of the lagoon in my first speech to Parliament. I’ve been proud to deliver funding to support the activities of the Curl Curl Lagoon Friends. And big thanks to James Brickwood Photography for capturing the day.

It was such a privilege to spend some time answering questions and having a chat with the student leaders of St Cecilia’s Balgowlah. Plenty of wonderfully smart, passionate and insightful young people. ... Their enthusiasm was very much appreciated!

18.01.2022 Great day out in the community! First with Seaside Scavenge Manly, who have a fantastic program to encourage recycling and getting rid of waste from our environment. We had a great morning at Queensie Lagoon. Followed by a small, yet important, Remembrance Day service at Rsl Balgowlah with the Sub-Branch. Thank you for the invite. Lest We Forget.

16.01.2022 Watch out for a special moment tonight at the Wallabies v All Blacks - Manly’s own David Nduwimana (pictured in the middle) will be signing the National Anthem! Seven years ago, Dave fled the politically unstable African country of Burundi, fearing for his life. When Dave arrived in Australia he had an economics degree, little more than a guitar on his back and didn’t know a single person.... Today, after a long journey - he will proudly sing the Australian anthem at the Bledisloe Cup. He’s proud and relieved to have finally been approved for permanent residency. He’s an incredibly talented musician and valued member of the Manly community and congregation at St Matt’s Manly. You can read the full story here: https://www.smh.com.au//burundi-to-bledisloe-the-african-r : Pictured with Rev Bruce Clarke of Manly, when they came to share the good news of David’s citizenship being approved.

14.01.2022 It’s a pleasure to announce that the NSW Government has committed $120 million to continue free preschool until the end of 2021. This commitment will help ease cost of living pressures for our families. Providing access to free community and mobile preschools will offer more families, especially women, with a greater choice about paid work. This commitment will aim to assist more than 44,000 three to five years olds attending community and mobile preschools.... Free Preschool was initially part of the COVID-19 response and has saved countless services, jobs and kept NSW children learning during some of their most critical years. I am proud to see our NSW Government supporting families during the pandemic and now providing this certainty for parents into the future. This funding will be made available to around 700 State-funded community preschools and 38 mobile preschool services. I’ve been on a roadshow visiting my local Primary Schools to answer questions from our future leaders and discuss the importance of and our NSW Government plan to reduce plastic pollution! 11.01.2022 North Head Fire Update: Today I met with both the Minister for the Environment and Minister for Emergency Services to discuss the burn at North Head. I have requested that an assessment be undertaken to determine any damage to flora and fauna that may have occurred during the Hazard Reduction Burn.... Some people have used this situation to spread misinformation. Here are the facts: - The hazard reduction burn was a collaborative effort between National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in conjunction with Fire and Rescue NSW - On Friday, the public and media were advised that smoke may be visible from surrounding suburbs including Mosman, Manly, Balgowlah, Watsons Bay and possibly from Sydney CBD - The intensity of the fire is a stark reminder of what could happen if a bush fire had occurred in the North Head area in summer had not this important hazard reduction work been completed - The damage to property is limited to walking tracks and fencing that will be replaced - Approximately 700 metres of public safety fencing has been damaged around the Fairfax Walk and Lookout and will need to be replaced. The precinct will remain closed until safety rectification works are completed. This will occur as soon as possible. - NPWS will work with partners to monitor fauna populations and implement any required recovery actions. - NPWS will also take the opportunity to increase the level of weed control and feral animal control at North Head as the vegetation recovers. On the matter of funding: Since 2011, the NSW Government increased the number of firefighters in the NPWS from 1050 to 1226 This year National Parks received a $22.9 million boost which delivered an extra 125 National Parks and Wildlife Services firefighter boots on the ground The funding also means the NPWS can increase its aerial rapid-response firefighting teams by up to 80 firefighters, which is a 20% increase in capacity for teams which are deployed into rugged locations to extinguish wildfires. I want to thank all of our Parks staff, RFS members and emergency volunteers for their efforts. I will work with all Agencies to ensure North Head is vibrant and flourishes safety this summer. : The Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott Manly Observer Manly Living Love Manly

09.01.2022 Does your school have a sustainability project it would like funding for? NSW public schools will be able to apply for grants of up to $15,000 to assist in developing innovative hands-on projects to make their school environment more sustainable. The school projects funded by the grants must be interactive for students to assist in students learning about sustainability, linked to the curriculum, and improved the sustainability of the school environment.... These grants aim to inspire students and school communities to develop ideas and implement plans that will benefit the environment. It’s a great program and has delivered some fantastic local projects in the past. Please apply before December 11!

09.01.2022 With Parliament sitting today I couldn’t commemorate Remembrance Day in the community. Thankfully, I am enormously privileged to be able to seek the help of two outstanding local Veterans to represent me and our community. Blair and his wonderful family were able to represent me at Manly Dam. And, John represented me at Harbord Diggers service. ... These two gentlemen represent the best in our Veteran community and I believe we are lucky to have them in our area. To both of you I say thank you for your service. Thank you to everyone who came out to pay their respects. #LestWeForget

04.01.2022 Make sure you let the Northern Beaches Council know your thoughts on the 'Streets as Shared Spaces' trial project. Here are some important facts about the project: Councils will lead the projects and consult with the community and stakeholders to evaluate success and make changes as needed.... As I said in May 2020, community input will be essential in helping councils choose projects that will benefit their communities. If you have concerns or don't feel you've been adequately consulted then please contact the Northern Beaches Council or your Councillors directly. They have carriage of this project. Make sure you let the Council know about any changes you wish to see. You can 'Have your Say' via their project website. The State Government is proud to fund projects that support the community during COVID-19 and also test ideas for more permanent improvements to local streets, paths and public spaces. The purpose of this $15 million program which launched in 2020, is to enable improvements across NSW during COVID-19 and into the future which. - support essential workers to travel to work, and people working from home - contribute to NSW economic recovery in our local centres by - creating vibrant streets and additional safe space to support local business - activate high streets to create better quality public space - support physical distancing requirements and encourage safe social connection - support the well-being of local communities and their ability to exercise - attract people back into public spaces in a safe way, when appropriate to do so. https://yoursay.northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au/streets-shared-s

03.01.2022 $2.9 million to upgrade Manly Fire Station. Delivered. 1920 - 2020 and beyond! ... Wonderful to join the Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott today to announce the historic Manly Fire Station will receive a $2.9 million upgrade to ensure it continues to meet the modern demands of protecting the local community. A great investment long in the making. Manly Fire Station has been serving the local area from its current location on Sydney Road, Fairlight since its construction in the 1920’s. The current station configuration and facilities will be upgraded to bring it in line with modern emergency service requirements. What will this funding deliver? improved training facilities a training room for northern beaches staff to utilise, upgraded work safety conditions to assist firefighter activities, savings in ongoing repairs and maintenance of FRNSW assets, and dedicated male/female facilities. FRNSW Assistant Commissioner Paul McGuiggan said the upgrade would provide Manly firefighters with a real morale boost. An improved fire station and updated resources will ensure an improved emergency response for the Manly area, Commissioner Baxter said. The new facilities will provide staff with the equipment and amenities necessary to help anyone, anywhere, anytime. Construction on the station upgrades will commence in early December, with an expected completion date in mid-2021.

02.01.2022 Now there’s a front page! Yesterday I met with the Transport Minister to make clear our wishes to retain the Freshwater Class ferry. Whilst the Freshwater ferries might be largely empty Monday through Friday, they play an important role for tourism and in summer. We can strike a balance between new, more frequent boats for commuters and the old vessels for their tourism value. ... Here’s my statement on the ferries from October. I haven’t changed my view. STATEMENT ON FRESHWATER-CLASS FERRIES Manly and its iconic ferry service to Circular Quay are one and the same. That won’t change whilst I’m the Member for Manly. On my watch, there will continue to be a place for our iconic Freshwater-class ferries, servicing the world famous route between Manly and Circular Quay. I reiterate my comments to the ferry operator and Government that any changes will need to be embraced by my community and be a win both for commuters and the community. This includes a role for our iconic Freshwater-class ferries. Increasing choice, frequency, speed and reliability for Manly’s commuters is vital. There is currently work underway to consider what role the Freshwater-class fleet will play alongside the new Emerald-class vessels.
