13.01.2022 The eyes are just one of three major mucous membranes on the face that we like to call 'portals' for infectious diseases. When a virus, such as COVID-19 (the vi...rus responsible for the coronavirus pandemic), comes into contact with one of these portals it can enter the body. Once inside, the virus can infect, or 'hijack' your cells to cause disease. Since viruses can survive for hours (or days!) in infected droplets left behind from a cough or sneeze, you can come into indirect contact with a virus even when there are no signs that someone around you is sick.
