21.01.2022 My Experiences with Choi Hong Hi - Part 3 I was a young black stripe, attending the Canadian Nationals. At this time they had no children at my level at the nat...ionals. They offered me a 1st place medal. I declined and asked to spar in men's division. I did well, and walked way with 3rd place. After the event I was out with all the instructors at the celebration diner. A little know fact, the ITF had a Taekwon-Do song they would get the young black belts to sign. A fun time for all. While I was eating one master offered some red sauce he called Korean Ketchup to put on my food. I happily agreed. Everyone watched as I ate my food. Then I all of a sudden ran for a pitcher of cola on a server's tray she was carrying. I drank it all due to the spiciness of the sauce. Everyone burst out laughing. Some thought I would be upset. Yet I just laughed with everyone else. They explained it was tradition to tease the new generation coming towards black belt. I just was just extremely happy to be included. During the dinner my opinion was asked on many subjects. I was unsure why masters would ask anything of me, since I was no body. However I happily participated. Then part way through the meal, the founder Choi Hong Hi mentioned to my instructor how impressed he was with my performance at the nationals. Again I was surprised he noticed, since I only got third place. It was not my win that impressed him, it was my spirit. I passed up a free gold medal win to earn a 3rd place. The conversation continued when all of a sudden the founder suggested I test for 1st Dan before returning home. I choked on my food. He didn't ask me, he made the suggestion to my instructor. I was speakless. Before I knew it my exam was arranged to be performed by Master Ching Sing Lim, the technical director of the ITF. I stayed up all night practicing Tul. I then was asked to attend 4 full classes and then perform my exam. The idea was to test my endurance and indomitable spirit. At one point sparring I hit shin to shin with the man I was sparring. He dropped to the floor, while I remained standing. In the end I was victorious and was awarded my 1st Dan. They had no belt available, so a master gave up his belt so I could wear one. The point I am trying to arrive at is at one time the art was a large family like community. We fought, we laughed, and we carried for each other. Politics did not even exist then. We not only lost our founder, we lost our way. We need to return to the old ways and foster our relationships. These people who train, our students, instructors and masters are what is the most important. Cherish them and these moments as they will never come again. Taekwom!

14.01.2022 Monday class: You guys Rock! , it wasn’t easy but you smashed training tonight with 10 different kicks, 100 of each kick, performed consecutively. Total kicks 1000 + 10 more = 1010, with only one 30sec drink break. You dug deep and persevered, then backed it up with weapons training. Rest up, see you all tomorrow night for more fun. 10.01.2022 Junior Black Belt or Black Belt? We have discussed this subject before on this site. The question has come up a lot on exactly what is the difference and the me...aning or purpose of the junior black belt. "Dan" refers to man or adult. Therefore a Dan rank would be by definition an adult holding a black belt rank. It is interesting to note that many cultures consider a boy a man after he completes a right of passage. I asked the founder this question. It was described as the person being mentally and physically ready for the rank. Physical is easy. Can they complete the requirements? Yes? Then that can be checked off. So what does mentally ready mean? Well, do they understand the principles of the art and techniques? Do they follow these principles? Do they use these principles to improve their lives and the lives of those around them? If the answer is yes to these, then the student is mentally ready. Some use the junior black belt rank as a publicity or income generator. This was not the intention. A junior black belt, (black belt with a white stripe), was designed to easily identify them within schools and tournaments. At some points, others used this as an excuse to promote unqualified students to make money. Traditionally a black belt does not change colour. This is why stripes are no longer used on belts and replaced with roman numerals. The founder also wanted to ensure our belts and system were far separated from Japanese Karate. In the TITF all our black belt documents are listed as Dan ranks. We do not use shortcuts or separation in quality. All the steps must be met. We do allow for schools to use junior black belt colours such as Poome Dan Belts or the black belt with the white stripe. The actual belt used is far less important than what it represents. You are either ready or your not. I hope this clears up the subject for those who have inquired. I look forward to your feedback. Taekwon!

09.01.2022 The ITF Logo I am sure many have wondered how so many organizations can use the same logo with no legal proceedings. Simply put the logo was created for all wh...o practice the style of Taekwon-Do created by the founder General Choi Hong Hi. Jong Chan Kim created the logo at the request of General Choi in 1965. I will clarify the various parts of the logo, their meaning and how they work together. He presented the final design of the logo for General Choi's` approval. The centerline of the ITF logo in the shape of an "S" represents the South Korean flag. The half-circle at the top and the half-circle at the bottom represent the North and South Poles with the intersecting lines representing the Longitude and Latitude markers. Tae at the left-center of the logo represents the Atlantic Ocean, the fist in the center represents the Indian Ocean, and Kwon on the center-right represents the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic and The Antarctic are separated by the two half circles The blue color represents the United Nations and the desire for World Peace. The lettering around the outside of the logo is in the form of gears working together, moving forward. Knowing our history is very important and the knowledge should be passed down to all students. Taekwon!

03.01.2022 My Experiences with Choi Hong Hi - Part 2 As promised here is another of my experiences with Taekwon-Do founder Choi Hong Hi. In the early '90s a friend of mine..., John Laundry, was a promising 3rd Dan. Extremely good quality black belt and exceptional person. Many masters and even the founder had commented on his quality of technique and character. John was struggling due to the fact he was not a 4th Dan. He had attended the International Instructors course a few times but never tested. I had inquired why and found out the master above him wanted a lot of money to perform his exam. John also ran a not-for-profit school, so money was in short supply. He was a very proud person and never asked anyone for anything. While at the nationals I spoke to the founder about him. The founder seemed surprised by what had transpired. We were all out at the dinner which typically followed one of these events. I was sitting near the founder and he asked if John was present. I indicated yes he was at the back of the room. The founder arose from his chair and asked John to come to the head table. John arrived very humbled by the invitation. The founder began to describe his virtues. Then in a clear loud voice, he said, "Mr. Laundry you are a 4th Dan now!" You could see John was choking back tears. He was completely overwhelmed. Not in his wildest dreams did he expect this. He accepted gracefully and the founder mentioned to one of the masters to make sure his documents were completed immediately. Now John could perform his own gradings, free of the bonds imposed on him by higher-ranked instructors. No more additional fees or restrictions. This made all the difference in his life and the lives of his students. This is what I remember most about the founder. His empathy. He was passionate about the art and the people who practiced it. He knew the organization needed to charge fees to survive. However, he felt these fees should never be the focus. The people should be the focus. Without the students, we as instructors are nothing. Remember and embrace this philosophy. Taekwon!

01.01.2022 My Experiences with Choi Hong Hi - Part 4 Moral Code Over the years I had many conversations with the founder on many subjects. The subject of moral code was di...scussed at length. In his mind, a moral compass was as important as techniques, if not more. When we are old and grey, and our bodies have failed us, we are left with the person we became. Are we a decent person? Do we live by the tenets of Taekwon-Do. The Tenets are not something we just say each night as part of our training. It is something we should take to heart and live. In recent years I have seen grandmasters publicly ridicule others. The founder would never tolerate such behavior. Moreover, this person would never have been promoted with such behaviour. If an instructor or school is making negative comments about anyone, then you should keep your distance. Do not engage with them. Their opinion is irrelevant and should not concern you. There are many people like this in the world. Before you speak ask yourself this, "Would the founder be proud or ashamed of these comments". The founder wrote an excellent book titled "Moral Guide Book". I recommend this to all professional instructors. Think about what you say and do each day. Make sure the message is positive and supportive of the art. Anything less is bringing dishonour to his memory and to yourself. Taekwon!
