25.01.2022 #barmiclub update. The sofer came to explain to us how Tefillin are made and let us try using a quill. Boys (and some parents) were lucky enough to watch Rabbi Gutnick fix one letter of the Shule’s Torah at the same time!

25.01.2022 UNMASKED When reading the Yom Kippur machzor's description of the service of the Cohen Gadol High Priest in the Holy Temple on Jerusalem, there's a fair bit of dressing and undressing. Sure there was a lot more going on. There was sacrificing livestock and spritzing blood. There's throwing goats off cliffs, pronouncing unpronounceable names and group prostrations. It was exciting. It was real and it was religious. But every so often it reverts to changing clothes. ...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Do you really want to be rich? Our father Yakov was promised wealth. He was standing in front of his father Yitzchok, finally receiving all the blessings. He was promised heaven and earth. Servants, honour, unlimited real estate, and wine and grain in abundance. Hashem would protect him from all enemies and even bless his friends on his behalf. Seemingly he got the lot. In the middle of the list of gifts he was getting there is an interesting blessing: hevei gvir l’achecho.... The words are usually translated you should be a master over your brother however the word gvir is commonly translated as ‘rich man’ and thus the phrase could also be rendered he should be a rich man, for his brothers. I’d like to suggest that this interpretation is teaching us the true purpose of wealth and the real reason why we should want to become rich; so that we can help our brothers. It’s not about the toys or about the power; the lifestyle, the fame or the fortune, but the blessing of wealth is the opportunity to help our brethren. Money on its own signifies nothing, but it sure makes it easier to support others in their time of need. Real wealth is having brothers I just came up with a different interpretation of the verse. Over the last few days I’ve been intermittently logging in to the world’s longest Zoom. For the last 6 days thousands of Chabad Rabbis from around the world have been sitting and farbrenging with each other online, around the clock. It started in Australia on Saturday night our time and was originally scheduled to last for 24 hours, as different time-zones finished Shabbos and joined in. Yet when the official program finished, people refused to leave. At any time there have been 500 to 1000 shluchim sitting and sharing inspiration. You log in whenever you’ve got a few spare minutes and reluctantly tear yourself away when you’ve absolutely got to go. People are recounting their personal memories of the Rebbe and real-life stories that have happened to them. Some of the speakers are world-famous, while many I’ve never heard of before. There are guys present from all countries, at all ages and stages of life and serving their fellow Jews in an incredible variety of ways. One thing I have remarked, as I zoom in and out, is the atmosphere of conviviality that prevails throughout. There are so many languages being spoken and such a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but there is an absolute feeling of brotherhood because of the shared goal the participants share. Perhaps the verse is telling us hevei gvir l’achecho you’ll be rich (because) of your brothers. When you accept people into your life and accept them as your family, with common goals and mutual aspirations, that is the true definition of wealth and that is the greatest source of pleasure you can possibly be blessed with in this life.

20.01.2022 MUSINGS Parshat Chayei Sarah- by Elisha Greenbaum A CAPTAIN & A LEADER On the day when our forefather Avraham left the world, the leaders of the nations of the world stood in a line, in the manner of mourners, and said: Woe to the world that has lost its leader, and woe to the ship that has lost its captain (Talmud.
