21.01.2022 A wonderful opportunity presented by Reframing Autism.

21.01.2022 This looks like a great tool to help prepare anxious kids.

20.01.2022 Absolutely love this quote. Almost positive that I've shared it before but it totally deserves sharing again.

20.01.2022 I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at this beautiful book. It's a wonderful story with an easily understood message about how everyone is Just Right as they are. It should be read to ALL children, not just Autistic ones.

19.01.2022 With a disruptive year liike 2020, careful planning around change and transition is even more important.

18.01.2022 Let's talk "social skills". I'm frequently asked if I run group programs that explicitly teach social skills and the short answer is "no". This is largely because I fundamentally disagree with the idea that neurodivergent kids should be taught social skills when neurotypical children are not. I also find that the various social skill programs that are available somewhat ableist and not in keeping with respecting individual communication differences such as avoiding eye contact and needing movement to regulate when having a conversation. The picture below shows the result of using natural, child-led play to enable two brothers to communicate, collaborate and cooperate while regulating their emotions. No books. No worksheets. Just play, with scaffolding to support communication and regulation.

17.01.2022 I've just become aware that an NRL player used the r-word as a slur towards a ref on the weekend. Disgusted doesn't even begin to cover how I feel about this. Even my kids know that using that word is not at all okay. I urge everyone to read these posts by Diary of a Mom. Language matters. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156885241176937&id=310066991936... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156378693331937&id=310066991936

17.01.2022 Articulate as always, Cadence challenges the idea of Autism being a "superpower".

16.01.2022 Another fantastic opportunity from Reframing Autism to learn from #ActuallyAutistic adults

16.01.2022 A wonderful visual resource designed by I am Cadence - Growing Up Unique to facilitate communication. Perfect for kids who find it challenging to communicate in the school environment.

14.01.2022 Amaze is hosting this fantastic online event tomorrow with Chloe Hayden -Princess Aspien- A lot of Autistic kids are struggling with uncertainty and anxiety at the moment, this is definitely worth tuning in to.

13.01.2022 Meme for the day Image description: A picture of a city growing out of a phone on a brown background. Text reads "Verbal speech is not the pinnacle of communica...tion. Communicating is about understanding and being understood. There is no requirement that this needs to happen through speech." See more

12.01.2022 Wishing everyone a lovely Christmas, whatever that looks like for your family

12.01.2022 Rewriting the narrative around "restricted interests", this will be well worth checking out!

11.01.2022 Inclusion is a word people say a lot but that doesn’t happen a lot. I think maybe people confuse inclusion with integration? Integration is the expectation that... people with a body or brain difference must adapt to how the majority of other people do a thing. Integration is Autistic children going to school and the school requiring they process things in a neurotypical way, comprehend and complete worksheets and tests designed for how neurotypical brains process language and information, and interact and communicate the same way a typically developing kids brain does. Integration is a wheelchair user’s workplace having a labyrinth of narrow passageways and the staff lunch room only accessible by a flight of stairs. Integration comes from the belief that typically developing brains and bodies are more worthy, more valuable and more important than other types of brains and bodies. Integration is not what is fair or right but what is easiest, convenient or most comfortable for the average person. Integration is not inclusion. Integration is discrimination. Integration causes long-term psychological harm to disabled people. You can read more about disability, ableism and inclusion here:https://iamcadence.com//11/29/disability-ableism-inclusion/ Image description: An image of six children and young people. Three of the young people have their head and face downwards and hidden in their hands or arms. The other three young people have downcast eyes and expressions of sadness. Along side the images its says Integration is the expectation that people with a disability or other body or brain difference must learn and do how the majority of other people do a thing. Integration is not about what is fair or right, but what is convenient for the average person. Integration comes from the belief system that typical brains and bodies are superior. Integration is not inclusion. Integration causes longterm psychological harm to disable people. www.iamcadence.com #differentnotless #actuallyautistic #inclusionmatters #Integrationisdiscrimination #DisabilityRightsAreHumanRights #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisability

06.01.2022 Social skills should be addressed with ALL children and be based on mutual respect of individual communication styles and developmental differences. Why should Neurodivergent kids be the ones bearing the burden of learning to socialise in a neurotypical way?
