Currently we post to Bardon SS, Brisbane Central SS, Ithaca Creek SS, Kedron SS, Milton SS, Petrie Terrace SS, Rainworth SS, Windsor SS, and Wilston SS. Further, I have requested Oakleigh and Fortitude Valley to post our event on their pages. And Kelvin Grove! If you know of one, please advise me. Thanks, Trevor.

23.01.2022 QHTA 2020 Historical Writing Competition Special Category winner Congratulations to Scarlett, one of our Year 11 Modern History students and emerging young h...istorians, whose work was recently celebrated and awarded! Scarlett was honoured for her excellent writing in history, awarded as winner of the Indigenous History special category for Year 11 and 12 student work at the state-wide Queensland History Teachers Association 2020 Historical Writing Competition. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, the in-person ceremony was not able to go ahead, however, this is still a very worthy and outstanding achievement. Students studied the topic of the Frontier Wars, and Scarlett’s winning essay was on The Tasmanian Black War and Colonial Genocide, with an extract provided here: The Tasmanian Black War (occurring from the mid 1820s 1832) was one of the many manifestations of mass violence practiced by British colonists. But the historical narrative of the Black War is contested in Australian society and remains a topic of debate between Revisionist and Traditionalist historians. Conflicting perspectives about the degree of violence practiced during the Tasmanian Black War, pervade what is known as the ‘History Wars’ debate between Revisionist and Traditionalist historians. Truth has been blurred by a culture of generational silence regarding frontier violence in Tasmania and the narrative continues to this day. Eurocentric values and beliefs underlie the motivation of British colonisers in committing mass violence during the Black War. Claims that the Black War was an act of genocide remain controversial within Australian history. However, a shift in consciousness has brought the long-term effects of Frontier violence to the forefront of this debate, instigated by an amplified consideration of Revisionist perspectives, with its ongoing legacy still evident today. With our recent NAIDOC Week 2020 commemorations, it is important for our college community to continue to acknowledge and celebrate that our nation’s story and history did not begin with documented European contact, whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. The theme of NAIDOC 2020 this year was Always Was, Always Will Be, which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. For our students to both critically and empathically delve into an in-depth study of our nation’s history, including recognising the deep spiritual and cultural connection of First Australians, as well as the more confronting and contested perspectives such as the Frontier Wars and relations between First Nations Australians and British colonists during the period of contact and post-contact, this has never been more vital. Again, we want to congratulate Scarlett, who along with her certificate, was also awarded a $150 cash prize for winning her category. We are very proud of Scarlett’s achievements and it is great to see wider recognition of the wonderful work being done by our students and staff in the History department at KG, and the important work around First Nations perspectives in the College. #ThePursuitofExcellenceWithAllOurMight #YourPreptoPathwaysExperience

15.01.2022 Year 9E My PB Class Welcome RBWH Nurses to KG with our Dementia Community Project This term, 9E My PB are exploring the nature and significance of dementia as ...their Giving Back Community Project during My Personal Best class with Ms Hovelroud and Ms Christensen. Through our project based learning unit, they will be designing and creating diversional therapy aids to donate to patients living with dementia at the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital (RBWH). Last Wednesday during their My Personal Best class, 9E welcomed expert guest speakers to talk about dementia - and further inform them for their community project. Suzie Thistlethwaite (Nurse Navigator Cognitive Advocate), and Juliette Aizier (Nurse Unit Manager and Clinical Nurse Consultant of the RADAR unit - Residential Aged care District Assessment and Referral Service team) at the RBWH, work closely with dementia patients, and patients with brain injury. Our guests explained to us the use of therapy aids and diversional therapies, and how they can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia. The students got to ask lots of questions all about the science of dementia and what these diversional therapies do - but also about nursing and the medical profession. Year 9 student, Olivia, had this to say about her reflections of the afternoon session with our guest speakers: The visit we had from the two nurses, Suzie and Juliette, who work at the RBWH informed us on the roles they have in so many people’s lives. They care for people who have dementia or who have experienced brain injury in and out of the hospital. We were informed on how therapy aids can help slow the atrophy of the brain and make the overall quality of day-to-day life better for the patients and carers. As our project is based upon creating therapy aids for dementia patients, which can be very expensive, it was so informative and helpful to get firsthand knowledge from Suzie and Juliette and hear their experiences from their job. We got to hear how even though their speech could be gone or their behaviours might have changed, people living with dementia are still people with things they like and don’t like, just like us, which can better help us cater to individuals and their support needs. This could include, for instance, like making a therapy aid that could feature sports or music that the dementia patient is interested in. In a way we can connect on some level to these people through our donations and help give back to our community. The students will be working on their prototyping of their therapy aids, and very much enjoyed Suzie and Juliette’s presentation and engaging with the example therapy aids they brought in. The class now continue with this new-found knowledge and inspiration to improve on their projects, as our experts will continue to provide feedback on the student's diversional therapy aid designs. Ultimately, we are excited to continue with our project and focus on becoming dementia friends and making a difference in the lives of people living with dementia in our own community. An additional aim of our project is to promote greater awareness and understanding about dementia and the experiences of people living with dementia. So, for more information, we encourage you to access the excellent resources and information on Dementia Australia’s website: https://www.dementia.org.au/ And if you would like to become a dementia friend that is someone who wants to make a positive difference to the lives of people living with dementia through increased awareness and support - please check out this link: https://www.dementiafriendly.org.au/ Even small changes can help support people living with dementia to remain included, accepted and connected with their community, and we can all do our bit to be dementia friendly in our own communities too. #projectbasedlearning #rbwh #dementiaaustralia #dementiafriends #ThePursuitofExcellenceWithAllOurMight #YourPreptoPathwaysExperience

Thanks also go to our amazing P and C who sponsored this morning’s bbq breakfast and provided staff with a Kuta Café voucher. Thanks to Chappie Josh and our BBQ servers, Junior, Middle and Senior SRC students, our SRC teachers and coordinators, Ms Hovelroud, Mr Abbas and Mr Peile. Great breakfast enjoyed by all! Special mention also goes to the Staff Wellbeing and Recognition Focus group for providing all staff with a personalised thank you card and wellbeing resource pack to remind us to priortise and look for opportunities to bring happiness into our lives and those within our College community. #teachers #worldteachersday #mindfulness #happiness #wellbeing #community #ThePursuitofExcellenceWithAllOurMight #YourPreptoPathwaysExperience
