23.01.2022 Grug has gone on many adventures at kindy this term. Our young book makers are using our author study of Ted Prior’s character Grug, as an inspiration for making their own books. What wonderful writers we have at Kindy!

23.01.2022 In 2020 The worm farm has been a great source of inspiration. What a wonderful creature the worm is and so important in soil health and growing food. Every lunch time one of the children is on worm duty. They chop up the lunch scraps and feed our worms. Our children captured their story this week. #Anotherwaytoviewouramazingworld. PS watch out for magpies!

23.01.2022 As we come to the end of the year we continue sharing stories as a community of learners. The story has changed slightly though, as we look back over the year. Your child’s statement of learning Has been sent home and is a happy celebration of yours child’s year of preschool. We look back, we acknowledge where we are now and we optimistically look forward to new adventures.

18.01.2022 Empathy Cannot Be Taught But Its Development Can Be Facilitated ___ Heres how I do it:... I get down at the childrens level and provide physical comfort (a back rub or hand on shoulder) and soothing words to the child who is upset. I calmly, neutrally, ask the child who caused the upset to join us (often they are still standing right there) and we talk briefly about what happened and how that made the child who is upset feel. To make the abstract understandably concrete, we notice the behavioral indicators of those feelings (their facial expressions or tears, for example). Then I say to the other child, When I hurt someone and I see I made them feel this way, even if it was an accident, it makes me feel sad so I apologize or say Im sorry then I try to make them feel better, like Im rubbing his back right now. Would you like to do that? By inviting, but not forcing, the other child, I allow for their autonomy. Then I respect their choice. I trust that if they say no in September, and I respond consistently over time, by December they may say yes and accept my invitation to apologize and comfort, authentically. Then I need to continue comforting the hurt child and help them regain emotional control. Meanwhile, Im working with the other child to help them problem-solve ways to handle the situation next time. Also, over time, I consistently model apologizing and comforting when I do something that hurts someone and model how I resolve conflicts with others. We cannot teach empathy but we can facilitate its blossoming in its own time when each child is authentically developmentally ready.

18.01.2022 This term in bookmarking we have been exploring how to illustrate water. Using Pamela Allen as our mentor author, children have developed some wonderful crafting skills with movement lines and colour!

15.01.2022 In nature today we found fresh water snails and interesting holes. We also found materials for patterns. We now have yerrabula purtlaitye (6 in Kaurna language) signs to sing with at the welcome day in the park. We hope children and families can sing with us at 11 am on Saturday September 26th in the park ( near cricket nets). Meet and gather at kindy 10.30 am sharp.

15.01.2022 Today at Nature Kindy Aunty Lynette asked the children and teachers to listen, to feel and to learn more about Kaurna land and Kaurna people. 12.01.2022 Without a doubt questions about how we support our children to draw and write are ever present. At home you may have been grappling with getting you child to pick up a pencil. It is so important to consider if they are ready, able and motivated to do so. There are a few things to consider. This post has some ideas for what to do right now to take the the pressure off yourself (and your child)!

12.01.2022 How do we care for the world? Our fabulous four and five year olds have told the story of water and the creatures and people that rely on it this term. 09.01.2022 KENSINGTON GARDENS RESERVE: Almost 30 children from Kensington Gardens Preschool visited the Kensington Gardens Reserve Project site to learn about Kaurna cultu...re and the cultural importance of the site. The mainly 4-year-old students have been following the progress of the project for some time. Director Catherine Honeychurch says the school has always been known as ‘The Kindy in the Park’ (Ngartuwirra Wirrangka). We are very excited about this group of children, they only started in January and we use the park as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan. The children keep a journal of construction activities and work they see happening on the project. Council is working closely with Kaurna Traditional Owners on the Kensington Gardens Reserve Project to recognise and respect the importance of this site to First Nations People. 08.01.2022 Busy with our hands today and everyday! Which veggies in the rainbow soup did we grow? The children made dice and they go home this week. We wonder what games about how many you and your child will come up with this holiday? Our children are becoming skilful at mentoring each other in book making. You might like to book make this holiday too!

05.01.2022 Dear families thank you for coming to the campfire today. The popcorn and soup and the element of fire were all memorable. Our aim is for the learning stories to tell you about the journey of learning for your child. We call this pedagogical documentation and it informs us about what could happen next at kindy as well as a way to share the joy and wonder of learning for our fabulous 4 and 5 year olds. See you all next term.

04.01.2022 Public parks and playgrounds to re-open in South Australia Local councils have been important partners in our fight against COVID-19. In the early stages of... the pandemic, a number of councils closed parks and playgrounds, which was appropriate at the time, although there was no specific requirement to do so. Now that we have low levels of cases and there is no current evidence of community transmission in South Australia, it is safe to enjoy these public facilities again. The risk of COVID-19 transmission from outdoor parks, playgrounds and equipment is low and can be managed by following social distancing and hygiene precautions. SA Health recommends parks, playgrounds and skate parks can re-open with signage reinforcing: Social distancing (keeping 1.5 metres from others) Size of gathering (should be 10 or less at any time) Information about hygiene requirements. SA Health also recommends councils clean playgrounds and equipment regularly. SA Health is also recommending increasing cleaning and disinfection of public amenities (e.g. public toilets).

04.01.2022 Talk about what they're doing and what they're seeing. Let them turn the pages even if it's 2-3 at a time and linger on the pages they like.
