01.01.2022 TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT SAND COLIC With green grass starting to appear and several horses being treated recently with sand related colic NOW is the time to make sure YOU are doing everything you can to prevent it. Feed PLENTY of forage (VERY IMPORTANT): Hay and grass-based diets are best. The roughage keeps the intestines moving around the clock. A slow feeder or hay net can reduce wastage and make the hay last longer.... Don't place hay or feed directly onto sandy ground- tubs or rubber matting are a good idea Keep your pasture healthy- Horses on sandy soil are more prone to picking up sand as they graze. If your pasture is thin or over grazed get some advise from your local agronomist. For example use rotational grazing to give grass time to recover. Add Psyllium to your horses ration- Psyllium is a high fiber laxative that may help move sand through the system. It's important to feed only periodically (once a month) when the goal is to move sand. Follow product label or as directed by your vet. Encourage your horse to drink plenty of water- We all know horses need fresh clean water at all times, but good hydration, along with forage helps keep intestinal contents moving. Intestinal worming- do you have a worming program suited to your property and horse/s? we can perform worm egg counts to make sure you are worming when needed and with the right product for the time of year. Drug resistance can be a BIG problem See more
