24.01.2022 "...the biggest forest fire in Australia's recorded history" 1 year ago. Today it's cold and wet but you don't have to venture far from where I sit to see the blackened skeletal remains... We can not become complacent. We can not allow this to happen again. While it's good to see some regeneration we are more concerned with all the fauna and flora that we've lost forever. As in all life, it can only take so much... @theclimatecouncil... #aboriginalculturalburning #firesticks #nature #saveourcountry #BlackSummer #earth #today #planetearth #bushfires #environment #sustainability #holistic #fire #therightfire

24.01.2022 Today we celebrate the lives and remember the incredible efforts of two Elders Dr. Musgrave and Dr. George in igniting the sharing of cultural fire across Australia. We are honoured to walk in your footsteps. The country and people across Australia and the World acknowledge and thank you.

09.01.2022 ...and a few more. Thank you Birkenburn Farm for all your hard work in preparing for this workshop and your contribution in making it the great success it was. Looking forward to our next one. Bring it on.

07.01.2022 Nearly 30 years ago a book found me. In it I read something that has always stayed with me. Aboriginal culture is characterised by a highly sophisticated belief that man is a part of the total environment and can in no way be considered separate from it. Hence if you damage the earth you damage people. It goes on to say that when looking at illness in an individual, family relationships and environmental factors are considered, amongst other things. If you go to a doctor t...oday do you ever get asked about environmental factors and how they may be affecting you? Eco-anxiety is a recently coined term relating to humans’ relationship with the environment. We cannot allow those in power to ignore environmental vandalism and neglect any longer. This is my last post on here. I have stepped down as a Director and social media facilitator. It is time to move on. I am so grateful to have been a part of Aboriginal cultural burning. I see Country very differently now. There is looking and there is 'seeing'. As I was always behind the camera it was hard to find a photo. This is my first burn in 2016. Den called it 'girl on fire'. Before all our high viz gear and some would be barefoot. The other photo is one of my personal favourites. Two fire circles meeting gently in the middle. One black and one white. It made me think of the different groups of people that would also come together on our burns. Keep coming together and keep burning See more

04.01.2022 A story by Kyodo News in Japan about Cultural Burning and the Birkenburn Workshop held in July 2020.

02.01.2022 It would seem that Cultural Burning is clearly more than just ‘hazard reduction’. Thanks for sharing!

02.01.2022 ‘Indigenous cultural burning techniques will also be examined in greater detail’ Let’s hope there’s more than just an ‘examination’! Might we also ask just WHO will be doing the examining and how long will this take?

02.01.2022 A wonderful testimonial received form Ro Alden Hull who was one of the participants from last weekends Cultural Burn at Birkenburn Farm. Thank you Ro. The cultural burning workshops at Birkenburn Farm with Den Barber of Yarrabin Cultural Connections and the fire practitioners from Koori Country Firesticks Aboriginal Corporation are a truly amazing experience. I enjoyed the first one so much I immediately signed up to do the second workshop! Den is so experienced and know...ledgeable about cultural burning and his passionate drive to care for country is infectious. The Koori Country Firesticks practitioners who lead the workshop participants through the burns make everyone feel safe and included. Martina Shelley and the team from Birkenburn farm have created an incredible space for learning both physically (the facilities and catering are fantastic!) and mentally/emotionally. The workshops provide a unique experience which allows participants to create a new and positive relationship with fire. It has been an absolute honour to learn from all of the people involved and I cannot recommend the workshops highly enough. I also recommend participants camp out for the workshop as it greatly adds to what is an immersive and incredible experience. Ro Alden Hull See more
