25.01.2022 Kununurra Museum Collections online - To commemorate the centenary of QANTAS, although we have very few QANTAS related photos, aviation has been crucial to the development of the Kimberley Region so today's featured Album is our "Aviation" Album which has 236 photographs. KHS has made around 3,000 photographs accessible to all online, fully documented with metadata and searchable on Trove. If you think you could be useful or help, please support your local archive and museum - Join KHS as a life member (just 10 x annual fee). https://www.flickr.com//khs-museum/albums/72157626935901132

25.01.2022 ABC "7.30" on September 29th 2020 - Did anybody else notice that Sir David Attenborough had a 1st Edition of "Kings in Grass Castles" on his bookshelf?

25.01.2022 ABC Kimberley wanted to know where Kalaroo Downs was - Did you know that this film was scripted by author Mary Durack Miller (MDM) for her husband, Horrie Miller's company, MacRobertson Miller Airlines. The fictitious "Marsh family" of the fictitious "Kalaroo Downs station" - "Helen" and "Richard" were actually Ruth and Doug, children of Reg and Enid Durack (who both appear in the film), of Kildurk station (a mixture of the Kilfoyle and Durack names) over the border in the N...T. MDM chose Kallaroo Downs for Kildurk so that the "KDT" branding irons would match. The Aboriginal man who picks them up at Kununurra Airport is Jackie Saville, a Queensland man who worked on the Ord Project. A copy of the film was donated to us by the daughter of MDM, Patsy Millett, and we play this at the Kununurra Museum run by the Kununurra Historical Society. Kildurk was originally the "Magdhaba block," part of Auvergne station until 1950 when MP Durack sold all of the Connor Doherty & Durack properties, Argyle, Ivanhoe, Newry, Auvergne and Bullita stations. MP Durack had the Magdhaba block extracted from the Auvergne leases for son Reg, who pioneered Kildurk from 1950. The Commonwealth Government purchased Kildurk in the late 1970s for Aboriginal people and it then became known as Amanbidji. Reg Durack can be seen on horseback and a split rifle holster is visible. After a visit to Kununurra Museum in 2009 the rifle holster was sent to us by his son David, then a Professor of Medicine in the United States. The holster sits on Reg Durack's Veterinarian Chest which we also have at Kununurra Museum. See more

24.01.2022 A shared history to be shared! Was a big day for the official opening of the new Ord River Diversion Dam west bank picnic-viewing area and new Culture & Heritage Interpretive Signage. This was a great project that Kununurra Museum was involved in with the result of sharing in the culture and heritage of all the other participants, with the public. As part of this project a new web page has been created that provides more history and photographs than could be provided on the... sign. This is linked by QR Code from the new interpretive signs. Enjoy some more history from here.. http://www.kununurra.org.au/research/1960-1963-ord-stage-1 or go to an illustrated History of the Ord River Irrigation Area with links to other resources as a "Timeline of Tropical Agriculture" from the earliest days, to show the incremental development that led to the Ord River Irrigation Project, from... http://www.kununurra.org.au//ord-river-irrigation-area-his See more

19.01.2022 Photographs of CAC Wirraway A20-62 forced landing site on coastal saltmarsh near WA-NT border and displays at Kununurra Museum.

16.01.2022 Some visitors to Kununurra Museum yesterday, Peter & Jenny Ripley (relatives of the Richards family), were fascinated to see some of the iconic collections made by Kimberley Research Station Entomologist, Kevin Richards in the date-sorted slideshows that run on many screens at the Kununurra Museum. Kevin was not only a great photographer (as you can see in this album we have on Flickr - Link below) but he was also a cinematographer and made the film, "On the Banks of the Or...d." Another great 16mm film that Kevin took when the Royal Tour came to Kununurra on March 17th 1963 is available to view at the Kununurra Museum YouTube Cinema (Channel :^) A little known fact may surprise some of you is that Kevin's wife Crystal had also studied as an Entomologist. Over the years the family have become members of KHS and have donated extensive archival material to KHS with some of the best photographs in our extensive collections. Presented here are just a sample so follow the links to see hundreds more. 13.01.2022 The 2021 WA "Premier's ANZAC Student Tour" will be unable to go to Europe, so instead as part of a tour of Western Australia they will visit the East Kimberley. Kununurra Museum will be one of their stops and we have been working with them to provide information for their itinerary. 03.01.2022 MMA Route Map - Perth to Darwin Cover

03.01.2022 The man 2nd from right, Alan Salisbury, had spent many hours over several days at the Kununurra Museum run by the Kununurra Historical Society in the week before the ceremony. Alan had worked for Vickers Hoskins in Bassendean, who manufactured the Ord River Diversion Dam Gates. Alan then came up to install the massive radial arm gates spending three months here in late 1962 and early 1963. This was his first visit since. I decided to invite Alan to the opening ceremony an...d although he was not officially acknowledged as time got away, he greatly enjoyed the day. He told how during the Diversion Dam construction, because there were so many rivets in the gates, the company brought out numbers of expert (ship) riveters direct from Scotland to the 40 degree heat. Alan is 87 and had been up river with Triple J Tours, which he greatly enjoyed because "there was no water there" when he worked on the gates and had been on another tour (Bush walking tour? Alan may have been told that he was oldest they'd had to do that :^) - Alan at 87 climbed up (to "Nefrititi's Pool" - HLY) well up above Middle Springs, as locals will know, no easy path! - When back in Perth Alan still rows - sculling on the Canning River, most mornings, has been club captain and a life member of the West Australian Rowing Club (who might want to share this on their page - Sorry not a better pic of him - my camera in the way! :^) - Anyone else have a better pic to post in a comment below? Scroll down on link below to see a paragraph about Alan. An amazing and interesting man to talk to a real pleasure to get to know you Alan and hope someone can show you and you get to see this. Looking forward to seeing your photo collection. http://www.warowingclub.org/honour-roll

03.01.2022 Found what may be the other side of the MMA Route Map - Perth to Darwin cover (circa 1960) that was posted earlier. Found this on a different fB page...

01.01.2022 Heritage at Risk - Heritage like Neal Durack & Tom Deacon's graves and the old Ivanhoe homestead site, as well as the Quiet Stockman - Dave Suttie's grave, could all be at risk to development of the 'west bank' Ivanhoe station. - See https://heritagedetection.wordpress.com//the-demise-of-he/
