25.01.2022 Join our panel of experts at our free online event, The Pandemic Impact, as they help us explore and understand how the COVID-19 virus behaves and its impact on the many aspects of our communities. When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, few of us knew that we were entering a new phase in our history, one that would permanently change the way we live and understand the world. Moderator:... 25.01.2022 This is a huge advantage for our students. Researchers can now design projects that allow the creation and use of genetically modified organisms on the Albury-Wodonga campus,' said Dr Cathryn Hogarth, Head of Campus (internal leadership), when discussing the newly certified physical containment (PC) Level 2 research laboratory. 'Our students will get first-hand, real-world, workplace experience which is a huge advantage for their future employability. Although the lab itsel...f doesnt look obviously different, the certification took a lot of work and included an almost complete refurbishment as PC2 requires a completely sealed environment. This is a first for our campus. Normally our students and researchers would need to travel to our Bundoora or Bendigo facilities to work with genetically modified organisms. 'This type of research is common practice in biomedical science. For example it enables us to study how mutations in a gene may contribute to a disease such as cancer or help us understand why a particular strain of bacteria is resistant to antibiotics. This means more opportunity for biomedical research for local students. It really widens the breadth of research and experience we can now offer. Join us for a campus tour at our virtual Open Day (Sunday 23 August) https://now.latrobe/3ifMRQJ to learn more about our facilities and courses on offer at Albury-Wodonga. #Scienceweek

24.01.2022 'I work hard at whatever I do, and I chose to become a teacher because I want my hard work to matter,' said Sam Davies, first year Nexus student now teaching at Wodonga Senior Secondary College. 'I have lived in 8 cities in 4 countries, studying and working for international aid organisations and as a crisis response consultant for a large private medical and security provider. I hold a Bachelor of International Relations from the ANU. 'I resigned from my Sydney-based manage...r-level role, moved to regional Victoria and joined the Nexus program because I knew I wanted to make a difference by helping individuals set and achieve their own goals. I was looking for a way to become a teacher without having to stop working, not because of the income but the sense of purpose and achievement. 'Nexus provides an opportunity to change career without having to take too many steps backwards in that transitional process. I have enjoyed being part of a highly diverse Nexus cohort and the support that the Nexus staff have provided during COVID has been exceptional. 'The M.Teach program is delivered well online, but working at the school is by far the best part of this program and is what makes it unique. Every day I am in the classroom I fall more and more in love with teaching. I would strongly encourage mid-career professionals who are looking for a more meaningful career to consider using their experience to build a better future for young Australians. 'Being a teacher is an incredible privilege, you become a part of hundreds of peoples lives and a force for good in the world. Nexus is the best available pathway for you to make that change.' 10.01.2022 Our new Strategic Plan outlines how we will achieve future success and emerge as a more resilient, future-focused and necessarily more efficient institution that will flourish in a post-COVID world, said La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO. While the severe financial consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic mean well necessarily be a smaller institution measured by revenue, staff and students for the foreseeable future, we will continue to place our many commun...ities at the heart of everything we do and will more sharply focus on our strengths in teaching and research, and retain our identity as a university with a strong sense of social responsibility, continued Professor Dewar. A new Strategic Plan for the next 10 years has been approved by La Trobe Universitys Council, following extensive staff and stakeholder consultation, with Regional Campuses a key focus area. The plan states: We are Victorias only true state-wide university and regional campuses continue to be central to La Trobes identity, mission and purpose. So although things might look different moving forward we will continue to be a positive pillar in our local community.

07.01.2022 Researchers from La Trobe University’s Archaeology Department in Melbourne, Australia led the excavation, reconstruction and analysis of the rare, male fossil from the Drimolen Main Quarry north of Johannesburg, South Africa. Discovered in 2018 on South African Father’s Day (June 20), the DNH 155 fossil is also known as the Father’s Day fossil. Paranthropus robustus was a large-toothed, small-brained hominin that co-existed with our early direct human ancestors as a ‘cousin s...pecies’. The researchers argue that the DNH 155 specimen they found provides the first high resolution evidence for microevolution within an early hominin species. Co-lead author and La Trobe PhD candidate Jesse Martin said the findings, published today in Nature could lead to a revised system for classifying and understanding the palaeobiology of human ancestors.

07.01.2022 Senior Lecturer James Van Dyke, has joined forces with Joseph Briggs, Liticia Ross, Tracey Hamilton, and Brandon Cooper from Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre in Deniliquin to study turtle populations at six wetlands along the Edward/Kolety River system from Deniliquin to Balpool Road Bridge. The aim of this study is to determine whether connectivity of wetlands affects turtle distribution, movement, and body condition. Local knowledge and experience has driven the project’...s success, providing an opportunity to learn new skills about how to trap, handle, and measure turtles, and monitor turtle populations. 06.01.2022 'It means we dont have to abandon jobs and friends, we can stay with our support networks and keep family close, and be in a better financial situation,' explains fourth year Bachelor of Psychological Science student Rachel Martin, when discussing the newly offered Honours and Masters in Professional Psychology courses on offer here at La Trobe Albury-Wodonga. 'I was aware that I could study undergraduate psych locally, but at the time when I started, I was told that if I w...anted to continue onto my honours year that I would need to move to Melbourne. Luckily during the course of my undergrad the option became available to do 4th year at the regional campus.' Rachel hopes in the future to become a registered Clinical Psychologist and says having the ability to live and study locally means everything to her. 'In the long term it also means that more students who are graduating are more likely to stay in the area and find jobs locally, which really benefits the community. If I wasnt able to study locally I may have decided to do something else because I wasnt willing to leave my family, so its given me the chance to chase my dreams. 'The fact is we do have a need in the Albury Wodonga region for people qualified in psychology so why not offer the education and training here as well. 'I feel like the one on one experience (studying at the Albury-Wodonga campus) was amazing and totally unique to a regional setting. Being able to get really close to my cohort because in the final years there was only a handful of people, that meant that we could really support each other, and pick our tutors brains. I also love that I have been able to network in my local area at the same time.' Wanting to continue your post-graduate studies in Psychology?
