25.01.2022 Despite the cold and rainy weather over the weekend our volunteers still got to work. This weekends work was focused on removal and cleaning of parts to get them tested for cracks. Captions on individual photos.

24.01.2022 It’s time for way back Wednesday! Today takes us back to 30/3/1982. Here we have Y1 and XA3 on a log train headed for ANM Boyer. Seen here slogging hard up Karanja bank on the Derwent Valley Line. ... This photo features in our 2021 calendar available from our online store https://www.lner.com.au/store/ thanks to Peter Watts

19.01.2022 Today we saw the new buffers installed on the rail bug. Also the crew began some track work at Turner’s Marsh with the first clip replaced and track straitened and a drain clean out. While work on DP 14 and the clean up of WG 62 continued at Karoola

18.01.2022 Now that it’s summer time, members are out and about during the week. Yesterday the workers were Darrel, who worked on the railcar interior panelling. While Ralph and Michael got to work on removing the old Karoola gang shed slabs. This is so we can remove the pine tree stump and roots growing under the slab, and rebuild the sheds.

17.01.2022 Today a special event took place in the preservation of Tasmanian railway locomotives. The Tasmanian Transport Museum in Glenorchy took possession of locomotive 2118 (ZA6). After its withdrawal in c2005, it was stored at East Tamar Junction with our locomotives 2144 (ZC19) and 2122 (ZB3). It is one of six ZA class locomotives built for the TGR between 1973 and 1976. Both the Z and ZA class were the most powerful diesel-electric locomotives to operate in Tasmania when they ar...rived, and were ordered especially for use on the newly completed Bell Bay Line, to haul log trains to Longreach. ZA6 is significant. It is the last locomotive built at General Electric's plant at Rocklea in Queensland. The factory closed in 1976, shortly after ZA6 was rolled out the doors. It was also the last built-to-order or 'new' diesel locomotive that operated in Tasmania until the arrival of the TasRail TR fleet in 2014 (everything else in between was second-hand!). It was also Tasmania's 'Bicentennial' livery locomotive, with the Bicentenary motif applied in 1988 when the locomotive wore the green and gold ANR livery. Strangely when AN repainted it into reverse livery in 1996 the bi centenary motif was reapplied. In 1998 ATN (then operator of the Tasmanian network) applied a new numbering system to the fleet, but the TGR numbers were kept in place above the front cab windows. Thanks to Quinton Turner for supply of the photos. See more

15.01.2022 Another busy day out at Karoola Station today. Doug, Tony and George continued on with the stripping of the power bogie. Harri and Bozza got the engine running (video in comments) in WG 12, while Clynton removed the roof.... Elizabeth continued on with sanding WG 62. Harri and Clynton also dropped off more building supplies.

12.01.2022 With a limited burn off period, David, Greg, Andrew and Ralph got stuck into cleaning up Turners Marsh yard. Meanwhile back at Karoola, Bozza, Harri and Clynton got the generator in PT 5 running again. Also Elizabeth and Brodie got stuck into the gang motor clean up. With Gorge keeping on with cleaning up DP 14s engine.

10.01.2022 This Saturday Greg brought out our prototype, and newly named Rail Bug, that he has constructed at his own home with help from Fullham engineering and hydraulics in Legana. The board and some members had a successful planning meeting. Wayne and Dianne have also decided to entrust us with their gang motor WG 12. It will soon join its classmate at Karoola. ... While the meeting was underway, Johnno, George and Tony removed the brake gear from DP 14s power bogie, in preparation to remove the axles for crack testing.

09.01.2022 It’s that time of the week again.... This time it’s a view of Launceston loco depot on Saturday 19th August 1978. Captured by Bob Wilson, showing a variety of English Electric locomotives laying over till the next call of duty. Note the old coaling stage dominating the background and a DC double deck car carrier wagon. Yes that’s right cars did once travel by rail!

09.01.2022 Its way back Wednesday time! Today we have a photo of ZC 6 and another two ZC’s stopped at Scottsdale station around 1989/1990 This photo features in our 2021 calendar, available now for pre order at ... https://www.lner.com.au/store/ Nevin Shakespeare

09.01.2022 Way back Wednesday time again.... This time it's a weekend lay over at Boyer in September 1989. The Derwent Valley line allocated 866 & 875 are stabled in the mid road, with a couple of ZB's hiding behind them.. Whilst Bi Centenary liveried ZA 6 & ZA 1 are resting in the coal road.... Also of note, the once very common Commonwealth Govt plated XF Falcon crew car on the platform. We also have one of those tucked away for another AN period rail related exhibit. Greg Cooper photograph.

08.01.2022 A busy day at both Karoola and Turner’s Marsh stations yesterday. With Elizabeth, Bozza, Micheal, Andrew, Clynton and Doug working on WG 62. Tony, Murray and George (with some help from Micheal and Andrew) cleaned up DP 14’s oil cooler. At Turners Ralph, David, Ian, Ross and Peter continued the clean up of damaged trees and undergrowth.

07.01.2022 Another way back Wednesday Today takes us back nearly exactly 34 years to the 14/11/1986 and we have Alcos 834, 866 and 856 just east of Scottsdale. This photo is another from our 2021 calendar available from our store https://www.lner.com.au/store/ or by messaging the page. From tomorrow we will have a pick up point in Hobart.... 866 still remains in Tasmania at Don River Railway thanks to Chris Nuthall

04.01.2022 Today we took delivery of Wayne and Dianne Venn's WG trolley. This is an incredibly generous donation and we are very pleased to have a trolley with such a rich history. WG 12 was the last gang motor in use on the north east line. Also Wayne used this trolley while rebuilding the West Coast Wilderness Railway. We hope to get it going soon.

02.01.2022 Ever wondered what once graced Lilydale yard....? Well here ‘tis! Pic from QVMAG collection.

01.01.2022 An exciting day for us today as we had teams at every station! This is the first time this has happened. We had David and Greg clearing weeds at Turners Marsh.
