23.01.2022 Off with the Fairies: Research reveals the tooth fairy is now giving kids up to $40 per TOOTH Australian parents are forking out more than $40 for every childs lost tooth Thats almost a 289 per cent increase on what parents themselves were getting But the average cost of a tooth is still $2.62 according to study Researcher say: Raising a child to full independence will cost $1,028,000... Any parent will attest to the fact that raising kids doesnt come cheap. Between school fees, family holidays and signing up for weekend sporting activities itd be easy to think having kids costs you millions. And at the rate the Tooth Fairys prices are inflating its no surprise. Australian oral health brand Jack N Jill conducted a study of 1000 parents that found some mums and dads were spending up to $43 on a single tooth. Thats nearly a 289 per cent increase on what they themselves were getting back when the Tooth Fairy was dolling out a measly 91 cents.

15.01.2022 In the light of increasing concerns and directives associated with the current Covid 19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to reduce our hours and scope of practice at Leeton Dental Surgery. The focus will now be on emergency treatment and completion of any treatment that is currently underway. We will open for several hours each weekday morning to attend to emergency appointments and to finalise any uncompleted work. Please call ahead to arrange an appointment on 69532844. The change is mandated by our regulating bodies and follows advice from numerous authorities. If the surgery is unattended and there is an emergency David can be contacted on 0407459930. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope all can stay safe and well in these difficult times.

09.01.2022 Sex, drugs and oral health. Young people need to be aware about the oral health issues associated with binge drinking, smoking and taboo topics of drug use and oral sex; most young people are aware of the general health risks of excessive smoking, alcohol and highly sugary acidic drinks, drug use and unprotected oral sex. However, most dont know these behaviours affect their teeth, gums and mouth and increase their risk of oral cancer and other health issues. The Australia...n Dental Association (ADA) suggests all young people should be more aware of their actions and the health risks involved and be informed of whatever we do with our mouths or put into our mouths, that we do so responsibly, in moderation and with the appropriate precautions. Facts from the ADA: Oral cancer Three Australians are diagnosed with oral cancer every day Eighty per cent of oral cancers in Australia occur in people who smoke Early detection of oral cancer means a 90 per cent chance of surviving Drinking and smoking Having more than four standard drinks on a single occasion increases the risk of oral cancers Young people who smoke and drink alcohol increase their risk by 15 times Fizzy drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, processed fruit drinks, sugar-free drink varieties such as zero contain acid or sugar causing tooth enamel erosion and decay. Oral sex and HPV More than 25 per cent of oral cancer sufferers have never smoked. It appears these cases are due to contracting the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) through oral sex. Cervical cancer in women and genital warts are caused by the HPV virus. It can also cause oral cancer in both men and women. HPV can be transmitted via genital and oral sex. Tongue and lip piercings Care needs to be taken with piercings as they can cause chipped or broken teeth, injury to gums, swellings and cause nerve damage which could affect facial movement and result in permanent numbness, speech impediments and loss of taste. Eating the wrong things Teeth are not meant to be used for munching on ice cubes, eating popcorn kernels or any food that is extremely hard that can cause teeth to fracture. Diet Having a minimum of eight serves of vegetables per week compared to three or less decreases the chance of mouth cancer by 50 per cent. A new ADA guideline provides information about oral health risks when safe practices and personal care are not considered. This guideline may be accessed from the Dental Health website: www.dentalhealthweek.com.au

02.01.2022 During the COVID-19 pandemic additional guidelines have been designed to keep both staff and our patients safe. These include looking at the whole practice and implementing measures to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19.The levels of restriction on dental practice will change according to the current environmental risk assessment .The Australian Government, states and territories, will ease restrictions on some types of elective surgery from Tuesday 28 April. For dentistry this means going from level 3 restrictions to level 2. This means in addition to the emergency work we have been doing we can expand our treatment to things such as simple fillings and all denture and orthodontic treatment.
