24.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day Spring is definitely in the air today and our gorgeous Acacias are bursting with their little yellow pom pom like flowers

24.01.2022 Was fantastic to see so much life flourishing on this fire affected property in Clarendon today while out mapping for the Phoenix Fire Recovery Project. A very healthy looking blue tongue lizard, a patch of gorgeous Nodding Greenhoods and a carpet of beautiful Running Postman

23.01.2022 Demand for firewood is higher than ever. When firewood is illegally collected from parks and reserves it destroys trees and hollow logs that provide essential a...nd safe homes for birds, reptiles, native mammals like possums, gliders and bats. Let's protect Victoria's environment by sourcing firewood from a reputable supplier, or from a legal and designated firewood collection area. If you happen to see any illegal firewood activities, you can report it to Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or the Office of the Conservation Regulator on 136 186.

22.01.2022 So we got a bit of rain over the weekend! The Yarrowee River was roaring past the Meredith-Mt Mercer road bridge crossing at Mt Mercer on Sunday, and over the South Durham Bridge road crossing at Garibaldi. How much rain did you get?

21.01.2022 Look what a year on looks like! Fantastic growth in a year for this fire recovery planting in Clarendon and the making of a great shelterbelt

20.01.2022 Students healing the damage caused by the 2015 bushfires A team of Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management students from Federation TAFE hav...e grown thousands of native tube plants for property-owners, to regenerate bushfire-affected properties in the Scotsburn, Elaine and Durham-Lead areas. The initiative was formed after the December bushfires in 2015 burned around 4,000 hectares of land and damaged 12 homes in the Scotsburn area, 15 kilometres south of Ballarat. Properties received the first lot of plants in June! Project manager Bianca Fammartino said landowners are starting to see their properties standing tall once more. Going back and seeing the wildlife that it’s attracting is really rewarding, Ms Fammartino said.

19.01.2022 Hi Friends! We are pleased to bring to you another Powerful Owl sighting! Superbly captured by Andrew A (photo 1), the Powerful Owl photographed yesterday nea...r Mt Buninyong, is shown clutching prey remains (which appear to be a Common Ringtail Possum). And just because we cannot get enough of Powerful Owls, attached also is an older image of a Powerful Owl pair photographed by Grant P (photo 2) near Woowookarung in May 2020. Right now while we're in home-isolation, Powerful Owls breeding pairs are also likely attending nest hollows and keeping close to home. Keep safe, Friends! And be sure to get some nature therapy into your week!

17.01.2022 What a fantastic day it was today at Yaramlok Plain, along the Yarrowee River for a smoking ceremony and cultural story telling with the Napoleons/Enfield Landcare Group, and Uncle Barry. Also to admire the amazing work the Napoleons/Enfield group have achieved with restoration and revegetation of the site. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and gather, and pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and future.

16.01.2022 Today is the first day of FrogID week - Australia’s biggest frog count! Head out to your local creek, pond, nature reserve or even your own backyard and record calling frogs by using the free FrogID app. Every call uploaded contributes in helping understand frog and ecosystem health as well as populations across Australia. Growling Grass Frogs are distinguished by their bright to olive-green colouring, are listed as an endangered species with small populations found around ...our district. Numbers are in decline due to habitat loss, a frog skin disease caused by the chytrid fungus, introduced fish species and climate change. Thank you to Lulu from Narmbool for the gorgeous photos https://portal.frogid.net.au/frog-id-week

15.01.2022 Hi. I wanted to draw people's attention to an application to amend a groundwater license to allow for Commercial Bottling Use. This application is currently open for comment however is closing soon. If you have any interest in providing comment, please do so soon as it closes on the 6th of June. Thanks. See more

13.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week 2020! This is a week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that the First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. The Leigh Catchment Group pay our respects to the Traditional Owners of our surrounding land and water, the Wadawurrung People. We, along with the students and staff at Buninyong Primar...y School - Scotsburn Campus, are proud to present a Self-guided Cultural Walk of Mount Buninyong. By using the free to download Wadawurrung app the students were able to identify native plants and animals they would see on the mount. The students then drew them onto a poster, labelling both animal or plant in English and Wadawurrung. Part of the learning journey was educating the students on how to pronounce the names in the traditional language. These posters will be displayed to view and test your language skills, for NAIDOC Week around the Crater Walk at Mount Buninyong. Starting at the bottom car park on Blackberry Lane, wonder up Wallaby Track and around the crater. An easy walk, approximately 1km, 20 minutes. You could even download the app before you go and enjoy learning some Wadawurrung words like we did! https://apps.apple.com//wadawurrung-language-/id1511858036
